Excellent and Entertaining Textbook

For its freshness and originality of exposition and material, I give this book 5 stars despite some minor weaknesses noted below.
The book covers classical material in an unconventional manner; for example, it adopts the historical approach, begins with polygonal numbers and number sequences, and contains much recreational material, aside from the "serious" classical results. It also treats some applied aspects of number theory such as public-key cryptography. There is an abundance of problems, ranging from easy and computional to challenging. Solutions are provided.
Some strengths of the book are:
1. Strong continuity of topics and motivation behind the ideas and theorems.
2. Extensive coverage of recreational and "fun" number theory, and computer developments.
3. Historical approach: the book begins with the earliest number theory, that is, polygonal numbers and prime numbers; it has a lot of historical references and anecdotes, and gives some credits to the contributions of China, Iran, etc.
4. Many numerical examples and some neat algorithms, for example, Sanderson's algorithm to express the gcd of two numbers as a linear combination of these numbers, and heuristic methods for Diophantine equations and the Chinese Remainder Theorem.
5. Very clear and entertaining introduction to cryptology and its history.
Some weaknesses of the book are:
1. There are a considerable number of minor typographical errors, but nothing you can't correct yourself.
2. A little long (about 400 pages)--I prefer more conciseness in a textbook--but then it has a lot of history in it....
Overall, this is a very good number theory textbook for classroom use or self-study.

A Personal Accomplishment

Never has a course of study gotten me so interested in mathematics as this course by Dr. Tattersall. This particual book has given me incredible insight into the fascinating world of numbers and has enabled me to think about mathematics as both a historical progression and a personal endeavor. It envolopes the student and holds on right through the semester.
PS. If there were any mistakes in the table of prime numbers don't come looking for me!

Who knew math could be such a roller-coaster ride?

I took Dr. Tattersall's number theory class in the fall of 1998, for which we used a bound draft of this text. Its composition matches his frenetic and exhilarating lecture style, both in the presentation of the material and the frequent side-trips into math history. If you are math-mad, it's worth buying for fun, and if you must buy it for a class, it's worth hanging onto after that last exam. Good stuff!

Richard E. Tremblay, PhD, is Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Psychology at the University of Montreal and Director of the Inter-University Research Unit on Children's Psychosocial Maladjustment. For over 20 years, he has conducted a program of longitudinal and experimental studies addressing the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children from conception onward to understand the development and prevention of antisocial behavior.
Willard W. Hartup, EdD, is Regents' Professor Emeritus and former Director of the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hartup has spent many years researching friendship and peer relations in child development, antipathies and their significance, and conflict and aggression in childhood and adolescence.
John Archer, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, United Kingdom. His research is concerned with human aggression, grief and loss, and sex differences. Dr. Archer is also the author of several books, including Sex and Gender (with Barbara Lloyd) and The Nature of Grief; numerous book chapters; and over 100 articles in refereed journals covering psychology, medicine, and biology. If you are at all interested in understanding the Russian poetic tradition then this book is essential reading. In remarkably engaging prose Wachtel explains the thematic and formal elements that link key works of 19th and 20th century Russian poetry. These links, especially the formal, metrical relationships, help turn what might otherwise seem like a pile of beautiful but unconnected poems into a coherent literary tradition.

Thorough and easy to read

This book presents the history of this country in a surprisingly thorough manner for a shorter history book. The struggles and strife of a people and a country are excellently portrayed with clarity and a hint at the emotions they must have felt. The struggle to protect the borders of the land from powerful enemies coming from all directions provides an interesting theme which kept me reading. I was also emotionally touched by the bravery of these people in defying Hitler and refusing to send Jews to their deaths during WWII.
I was inspired to begin learning in more detail about periods and events in Bulgarian History.

A Decent Short History of an Important Newcomer to the EU

A brief and serviceable history of a national state forged in the Middle Ages that has reemerged from the shadow of two faded empires : the Ottomans and the Soviets. This book provides useful information with little nuance about Bulgaria's national experience as it struggled for its political and ecclesiastical identity in a region dominated by hostile neighbors and great power politics. The latter part about national politics in the post Communist period is opaque and a little dated, but generally this is a good introduction to the country and its history, as well as its economy. I recommend it to those who wish to understand Bulgaria's role in the region, the EU and NATO - but don't stop here.

Good overview but could use more information on Ottoman rule

This is a thorough basic history of Bulgaria. It covers every major topic and most important events but does not spend too much time on any one event. It also does not bog you down with frivolous details. The book is very readable and moves along in a fluid chronological order. The only real shortcoming is the lack of information on the Ottoman Rule, which is so important to Bulgarian history. I was also hoping for some more details on the early Khans.

About the Author
Ronald Eyerman is the holder of the Segerstedt Chair of Sociology, and a fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioural Sciences at Stanford University (1900 2000). His recent publications include Music and Social Movements (Cambridge, 1998).

Andrew Jamison has been involved in environmental politics as an academic and activist for over thirty years. He is Professor of Technology and Society in the Department of Development and Planning at the University of Aalborg and has published extensively in the areas of environmental politics, social theory, science and technology and intellectual history. His most recent books include Seeds of the Sixties (1994) and with Ron Eyerman Music and Social Movements (1998).
