How to turn a pile of poems into a literary tradition

If you are at all interested in understanding the Russian poetic tradition then this book is essential reading. In remarkably engaging prose Wachtel explains the thematic and formal elements that link key works of 19th and 20th century Russian poetry. These links, especially the formal, metrical relationships, help turn what might otherwise seem like a pile of beautiful but unconnected poems into a coherent literary tradition.
