Peter Jones is well known as an author, journalist, lecturer and publiciser of classics. He is the founding President of Friends of Classics and regularly contributes columns, reviews and features on classical topics in the national media in the UK. His books include Learn Latin (1998), An Intelligent Person's Guide to Classics (2002) and (with Keith Sidwell) Reading Latin (1986).

I had to get the textbook for a 3rd semester latin class I as taking in college. After using it in class, I am a huge fan of it honestly. Latin aside for a moment, the stories from Ovid's Metamorphosis are a wonderful read. But as for the use of the book itself as a tool for teaching and learning, I would definitely recommend it. A short list of what I loved about it:
- Stories of various length and difficulty chosen
- Stories are well ordered from easier and shorter to harder and longer as you go along
- All selections have a short background written by the author
- Footnotes were very helpful and plentiful at first, but lessened as you gained confidence and skill
- All these stories have many freely available translations for tougher sentences, passages, or for learning on your own
I had a wonderful experience learning from and reading this book. So if your looking to brush up on your basic latin after learning it or looking for a first beginners text, this is definitely a wonderful option.

Not exactly for the intermediate student...

This text claims to be for the intermediate student. This means that, if you have already learned to distinguish between long and short vowels and to identify which words agree with each other in any given phrase (as I hope your Latin instructors teach you to do fairly early on), you are already far too advanced for this book. While the critical essays and annotations are absolutely lovely and highly illuminating (seriously, they make me want to really, really love this book), this book holds your hand quite a bit by putting a macron (i.e., a diacritic accent to indicate vowel length) over every word that needs one and even by using a strange system of symbols, composed of carets and asterisks, to show you which words are meant to agree with each other in every line. This is quite a visual distraction from the text, and it also takes away much of the fun in reading Latin poetry: Latin is unique in that its inflections allow poets like Ovid to put the subject, main verb, and predicate of a sentence wherever and in whatever order they please, and part of the magic in reading a Latin poem is trying to put the puzzle pieces together on your own. Sadly, there is no such magic in this book, whose selections also overlook many of Ovid's best stories--but this may not be a fair criticism, since nearly any selection of Ovid's tales is going to leave out at least one reader's favorites and break the continuity of Rome's great "carmen perpetuum." If you're looking for a more advanced student edition, I would get William Anderson's commentaries on the first ten books of the Metamorphoses, published by Oklahoma. I don't know an equivalent for the last five books, but the Cambridge Greek & Latin Classics editions of books thirteen and fourteen are excellent.

Excellent intro to Ovid's Metamorphoses

I've now used this book for two editions of Ovid classes with high-school aged students. The selections are well-annotated and well chosen. While I'd feel confident with anything that Peter Jones has written, some of the discussion, which is excellent throughout, has some focus on the sexual. I don't fault Jones or question his choices. Sexuality is part of the human experience and particularly in Ovid's works, but it may be a bit much for younger students (or in religious settings). With that lone caveat, I look forward to the next time I can teach the Metamorphoses with this book.
Note to the publisher: Fix the cover. Fix it. It makes you look like amateurs, which neither the author Jones nor Cambridge University Press are. So go fix it.
