Insightful analysis

The chapters that comprise this compilation discuss the factors that honed Stalin's political outlook and acumen, enabling him to manage the Soviet Union for over three decades. Based on newly accessible Russian archival materials, the chapters document that Stalin was intelligent, hardworking and politically astute--as well as needlessly, viciously wasteful of the economic and human capital of the USSR. As a non-Marxist--indeed an anti-Marxist--I found the chapter on Stalin as a Marxist irritating. Otherwise, the chapters in this book go far to explaining Stalin's rise to power and how he managed to stay in power so long.

In 1914, the armies and navies that faced each other were alike down to the strengths of their companies and battalions and the designs of their battleships and cruisers. Differences were of degree rather than essence. During the interwar period, the armed forces grew increasingly asymmetrical, developing different approaches to the same problems. This study of major military innovations in the 1920s and 1930s explores differences in innovating exploitation by the six major military powers. The comparative essays investigate how and why innovation occurred or did not occur, and explain much of the strategic and operational performance of the Axis and Allies in World War II. The essays focus on several instances of how military services developed new technology and weapons and incorporated them into their doctrine, organization, and styles of operations.

Allan R. Millett is a specialist in the history of American military policy and twentieth-century wars. He is the founder of the internationally renowned military history program at the Ohio State University, where he is Mason Professor of History Emeritus. Millett currently directs the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans, where he is the Ambrose Professor of History and serves as the Senior Military Advisor for the National World War II Museum. He is the author or co-author of eight books and co-editor of five others.

Readable and Good

This is an anthology of various articles. Generally anthologies are the pits as they tend to lack a central them and the quality will vary. These articles are generally by the authors and as such they are of an even standard.
There are a number of chapters that discuss a range of issues from the use of Tanks to the development of the Aircraft Carrier.
The book is interesting although the area covered is naturally enormous and the amount of space that can be devoted to complex subjects is naturally limited. Despite this most of the essays are interesting and not only for what they say. In the first essay about the development of armored warfare by way of an aside the writer attacks Gueridian as a sycophant and also as a person whose reputation was largely the result of self publicity. Later the English theorists Fuller and Liddell Hart are critiqued as presenting overly schematic histories of the First World War which warped the truth to fit in with their own theories. Interestingly the essay then goes on to suggest that the first world war infantry battles were so complex that even now we struggle to understand them and for that reason it was no surprise that Douglas Haig had the problems that he did.
All in all an interesting book although again very much a starting point for the issue it covers.

Williamson Murray and Allen R. Millett’s Military Innovation in the Interwar Period provides an excellent analysis of the various innovations that were developed between 1918 and 1939. Murray, the Matthew C. Horner Chair of Military Theory at the Marine Corps University, and Millett, the Raymond E. Mason, Jr. Professor of Military History and Associate Director of The Mershon Center at The Ohio State University, have complied an impressive collection of essays from numerous notable historians. Murray and Millet’s study “asks how one might study innovation and what patterns may characterize successful, guided changes.” (Murray/Millet, 3) As times change, the world that incubated the change and innovation that is being analyzed begins to disappear and be reformed; bringing with it a new set of circumstances that must be accounted for when attempting to apply lessons from the past.
In order to provide a cohesive anthology, Murray and Millet instructed their authors to “compare and contrast the different experiences of three or more national military organizations.” (Murray/Millet, 3) By giving specific guidelines for the authors to follow while constructing their pieces, Murray and Millett ensure that all parts of the anthology have a similar tone and it flows well throughout. The book is broken down into eleven essays, stemming from seven specific areas of innovation. The authors concentrated their study, and that of their contributors, to “armored warfare, amphibious warfare, strategic bombing, tactical bombing, submarine warfare, carrier aviation, and the development of radar.” (Murray/Millet, 3) The success of this work, however, is the individual voices that are distinguishable from essay to essay, yet they each feel like a part of a larger whole.
The individual experience of those nations involved in the First World War shaped their ambitions and focus for interwar innovations. Military Innovations in the Interwar Period discusses the various motivations for the national military organizations that were studied. The French saw a need for great national security, and thus built more trenches and defensive measures. The Germans, on the other hand, did not want to become trapped in another war of attrition, so they focused on mobile armor (tanks) that could smash through these First World War style defenses. The British saw a need to maintain their naval superiority, so they continued to expanded and modernize their fleet. The Americans and Japanese were competing for dominance in the Pacific, so they too were focusing on naval power, particularly aircraft carriers. Their experiences during the First World War and their immediate goals greatly influenced their means of innovation during the interwar period.
Military Innovations in the Interwar Period is certainly a respectable historical work, but it is also a guide for future paths of innovation. Throughout this study, the various authors explore how and why various national military organizations succeeded or failed. This crucial information is important for understanding the period between the First and Second World War, but it can also illuminate possible future paths for innovation.

Joseph Needham (1900-1995) was the Sir William Dunn Reader in Biochemistry at Cambridge University for many years and author of two classic works that synthesized morphology, embryology, and biochemistry for the first time, Chemical Embryology (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1931) and Biochemistry and Morphogenesis (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1942). In the late 1930s, Needham became interested in the scientific traditions of East Asia, China in particular, and he turned much of his energy, enthusiasm, and erudition to this field in the form of a massive project to compile the records and history of what he saw as science and civilization in China. This project, still ongoing more than 50 years after its inception, has resulted in the publication of a massive series of dense tomes under the broad title of Science and Civilization in China, the first volume of which appeared in 1954. The original plan for the project envisioned 7 topical volumes, but subsequent research and interests have, so far, resulted in the publication of 22 substantial books. Some scholars have described Needham's project as the greatest feat of historical scholarship of all time. Not only did Needham write books, he also developed the world center for research on the history of East Asian science at Cambridge, with library facilities, collaborators, and financial support. Perhaps even more important, he set the intellectual agenda for the entire field of the historical study of science in East Asia.

For some volumes, he took on collaborators with special skills and detailed technical knowledge, but throughout this series, Needham's philosophical stance and his view of history are clearly communicated. The detail and scope of the individual volumes are quite variable. Some treat subjects broadly -- for example, the entire field of Chinese mathematics is covered in one volume; other volumes devote hundreds of pages to a specific topic, such as spinning and reeling in the textile industry. All you might ever want to know about the history of rudder design in Chinese junks can be found in another volume. Thus, the publication of the volume on the history of medicine in China, issued as part 6 of volume 6, has been awaited with some anticipation. Would it be massive, detailed, and comprehensive? Or would it be a selective survey?

Time eventually caught up even with Joseph Needham, and it became clear in the early 1990s that he would be unable to complete the projected volume on medicine in China. Needham enlisted Nathan Sivin, an eminently qualified sinologist and historian of science, to oversee the publication of this book. Sivin and Needham discussed and negotiated the content and final form of the book before Needham's death in 1995.

This volume on medicine is a radical departure from the format and style of previous volumes. Rather than a single, integrated historical account, it is an edited collection of five previously published essays by Joseph Needham and his long-time collaborator Lu Gwei-Djen, with a lengthy critical essay by Nathan Sivin as an introduction. Sivin and Needham selected these essays to illustrate Needham's vision of the main themes in Chinese medicine, as well as to present Needham's underlying historical philosophy. These essays deal with medicine in Chinese culture, hygiene and preventive medicine in ancient China, the origins of qualifying examinations in medicine, Asian origins of immunology, and forensic medicine in ancient China.

The best review of this collection is given by the editor in his introductory essay. Sivin clearly identifies Needham's philosophical stance: history is global in scope, priority in discovery is a central historical issue, and "getting it right by current standards" is the yardstick of historical judgment. As Sivin points out in his lucid introduction, the second and third of these particular approaches are considered flawed by modern scholars, and much of Needham's work must be understood in the context of his somewhat idiosyncratic ideas. This introduction is essential for a full appreciation of the essays that follow. As editor of the volume, Sivin has gently amended some of the essays and added explanatory and cautionary footnotes to include recent works and to indicate alternative views. The discussions between Needham and Sivin while they were preparing this book must have been both interesting and contentious.

The essays on immunology and on forensic medicine are especially interesting and useful because they collect much information not available elsewhere in English. The essay on immunology focuses on smallpox inoculation (not vaccination), which Needham and Lu date to mid-16th century Chinese sources. The chapter on forensic medicine presents a comparative history of forensic practices in the West and in China. A main source is a Sung dynasty manual for coroners dated to 1247 (Hsi yuan chi lu). Both chapters include extensive translations from Chinese sources that support the authors' arguments.

This book is a fitting tribute to Needham's genius and his particular views of history and the history of science. The introductory essay by the editor is a valuable guide to understanding Needham's work and its relation to current scholarship in the field. This new addition to the series, however, falls short as a current, comprehensive, and authoritative work on the history of medicine in China. Surprisingly, and unfortunately, we still await one.

Good for starters

This book was the primary textbook for my first year graduate PDE's class (I am an Applied Math student). The supplementary textbook was the one written by Strauss, which is the traditional undergraduate leveled text. My background is in Physics so I have seen PDE's before, just not in any detail as this.

As a textbook, I liked it. It was easy to read through and the hints in the back of the book were helpful when I was having a tough time solving the problems (some of which are quite difficult, others less so). I can say that I learned enough PDE's to be able to solve them properly if I were to see a PDE lying around in a, say, physics book! You will learn solving techniques reading through this book.

This text, unfortunately, is far from thorough, as the other reviewer has pointed out. This is an Applied Math textbook, NOT a Pure Math textbook! I had Evans' book with me the whole time and they were worlds apart! I tried to go through Evans' book along-side after reviewing a subject (like The Method of Characteristics) from P&R and it was a challenge. You won't become an expert in PDE theory using this book. It is most certainly an introduction. You don't see one bit of Sobolev spaces in the entire text; the treatment of shocks and conservation laws are left to a minimum, you don't even see a statement about the Reimann Problem (which comes up in research today)! Yes, there are many application but one thing I find tragic (coming from physics) is that the *interpretation* is kept to a minimum as well! Many "applied" mathematicians feel free to do this, I find, and it irks me to no end. The chapters on Separation of Variables and Sturm-Liouville theory is not complete either - this is to be expected since the topic can span multiple books by themselves. They do a good job of *introducing* you to the material, however.

I found myself always looking up other texts for another point of view and, perhaps, an interpretation or a better understanding of some results. For Separation of Variable and a view of Sturm-Liouville problems from a different angle, I whole-heartedly recommend taking a look at Churchill and Brown's "Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems" and "Fourier Analysis" by Korner. I find the treatment of Characteristcs to be done better and more intuitively by Zauderer. Uniqueness proofs are a strength of P&R and the only other book I found to be as easy to read regarding them is the one by Strauss.

All in all, this is a good book, don't get me wrong, it's just that you won't become an expert in the field. If you want a working knowledge of PDE's, I would recommend this book, Erich Zauderer's book, and Churchill and Brown's (excellent) book on Fourier Series; all of them to be read together.

Nice and efficient work for physicists and engineers

This book will give physicists and engineers a working knowledge of partial differential equations, which permeate their fields but whose underlying mathematics too many students just still ignore. That text is written very fluently and theorems and proofs appear only when the concepts and methods at stakes have been carefully presented through many examples. I generally prefer the top-to-bottom approach but it appeared that the one used in this book works quite well if you want to become more familiar with PDEs but don't necessarily want to be an expert on this field.

Using this book was absolute HELL - 6 years later and I'm still thinking about it!

I used this book in an undergraduate course at the University of Toronto. As a result of the course I took with this book, I specialized in subjects that were completely orthogonal to differential equations in my Master's studies in mathematics. So what was so bad about this book? Well, one funny factoid about this book was the amount of errors that we found as a class. This was a small specialized class consisting of future mathematics researchers in undergrad (At UofT there is a "Specialist Mathematics" major, for which this course is an option), and we actually started a PDF compilation of all the errors in the book and kept updating it almost every week and keeping it on the course website.
Usually when you have questions after a lecture, you go back and read the chapter of the book corresponding to this material. But this book doesn't allow you to do that, no matter how hard you try. The explanations skip steps, don't motivate the material, use words they haven't defined, and back up their arguments with diagrams that are not explained. I could go on and on, but why bother? The point is, the flaws I outlined are repeated over and over again, so the authors weren't interested in exposing the student to an exciting field while writing this book. The problem with people who understand very advanced material, is that it takes a completely different skill to teach it to someone. These authors wrote this book as if explaining something in their own words to themselves, but not assuming the elementary knowledge of someone who may first encounter these ideas. (By the way, isn't that known in logic as "begging the question", or "preaching to the choir"?)
So take this review with a grain of salt (like you should all reviews) but don't say I haven't warned you!

At last we got it!

This is a much needed and superb book. It is a must for all the specialists and beginners in phonetic transcription. At last, we have a general and compact presentation of the current version of IPA, also throwing new light on the rationale of some choices that were not clear or explicit enough in the papers appeared in the Journal of the IPA. A new symbol (for the retroflex implosive of Sindhi) is also added, together with some proposals for a wider usage of little apex letters. I would have appreciated still more details on the (clumsy and much debatable) solutions proposed by present IPA for tonal notations: I feel definitely more at ease on Yuanren Chao's side! The choice of sample languages is quite balanced as for families and geographical distribution. In my opinion, however, the languages should also have been chosen also because of their sociolinguistic relevance. Might we hope, e.g., for something on Spanish and Italian in the next edition?

"Introduction to Phonetics"

I have taken up linguistics as a hobby and I am finding the IPA Handbook a very useful guide to the phonetic alphabet and phonetic transcription. The best part is a phonetic guide to 28 languages such as Cantonese, American English and Arabic. The sound examples can be downloaded and the IPA charts are included in a form that allows easy duplication and enlargement. There is a succinct introduction to phonetics and phonology. All in all this would probably be a handy reference for people on any level.

What you'd expect

This book is exactly what one would expect it to be: a thorough explanation of the International Phonetic Alphabet. It has a beginning section on the description of consonant and vowel sounds and thier places of articulation. The best part about the book is it analyzes the phonetic alphabet of most of the world's languages including many lesser used ones such as Bulgarian, Catalan, and Igbo, for example. The back has a description of each of the symbols so one can figure out what sound an unfamiliar symbol represents. This is a good reference book for all linguistics.
