A vast amount of literature has emerged on the First World War and its repercussions since the Armistice. Two leading historians therefore present this comparative analysis of the ways in which the history has been written and interpreted. Identifying three generations of historians, literary scholars, film directors and writers who have commented upon the war, they assess social and cultural interpretations as well as diplomatic and military studies, seen primarily through the eyes of French, German and British writers.

Who Really Started, Fought, and Won World War I
By John Matlock
This is a most interesting book in that it is not a history of World War I, instead it is a history of the historical writings about World War I. The two authors, Jay Winter (Yale) and Antoine Prost (University of Paris) have looked at the histories of the war and determined:
The nationality of the historian,
British, French, or German, and
The time in which they are writing
makes a big difference as to what the history says.
I've thought for a long time that we really don't know what happened about an event until the histories are published some years later. Some like the full story about Kennedy or 9/11 are still too fresh in people's minds and there is still too much confusion. But World War I was now ninety years ago, I would have that that a consensus would have been reached among the historians -- NOPE!
Some of the differences:
Article 231 of the Versailles Treaty says, in part, (paraphrased) Germany accepts the responsibility for the war caused by the agression of Germany and her allies. Germany signed the treaty, but her historians believe that they fourght a defensive war to keep the French from invading.
The Marxist historians wrote that the war was simply the result of class struggle and that the nations involved were of little importance.
French pacifists developed arguments pointing to Allied responsibility for the war. And it was, in part, a fault of the Russians convincing France to take back lost provinces.
The time differences in the war come from before WWII when the war was 'the war to end all wars,' after WWII when the Great War was just one more historical war, and finally in the last fifteen years or so with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Marxist view, combined with the emergence of new styles of warfare.
This is a fascinating book in it's look at the many sides of the same incident. Perhaps there is no truth, only our perceptions.

Fascinating View of How History Changes With Time and Place.
By Anne Mills
History depends on how you look at it, and that is something that changes over time and over place. This book looks at how that has happened in the writing of the seminal event of the 20th Century, World War I -- the Great War. It is a fascinating exploration for those interested in the War. More broadly, it is an important book for those who are interested in history in general, showing vividly how much the interpretation of events can change, depending on who is doing the telling, and when the tale is told.
The authors, one a Frenchman and one an American, cite the dizzying volume of historical work on the Great War, noting that over 50,000 titles are listed in a French historical library (the Economist magazine cites 25,000 books and articles: maybe that's just in English). They review this literature longitudinally (over time), by country, and by topic. The national differences are profound: the consensus of anglophone writers is that the war was a tragedy, but the French view is tends towards a war of national survival. And the differences over time are profound as well. In the 20's and 30's, the focus was on the diplomatic and military aspects of the war, with a big contribution from political leaders and generals, pointing out how right they were. After World War Two, the historian's focus on the Great War shifted to social and economic factors, with a significant Marxist influence. And in the last few decades, the focus has shifted to cultural and individual topics, including the way in which the Great War is remembered. This adds up to a highly illuminating look at how the historical idea of the Great War has evolved -- and will doubtless continue to evolve.
But the importance of this book goes beyond an examination of one conflict, no matter how significant. It is a vivid illustration of the fact that writing history is a process of combining selected pieces of evidence to tell selective stories. Those stories depend on who is writing the history, on where they are writing it, and on when -- and why -- it is written. It is too easy for the reader of history to forget that even the most compelling work is a partial view, and that "what really happened" can never really be determined. That's not to say that everything is relative, but in history, most things are.

So Boring....
By Kara Ashlan
Had to read this for a MA world history class and it's so boring. If you are into the war history - maybe you'll like it - but for me, no thanks. It was one of those books for school where you read maybe 40 sentences per chapter, again, boring. I even found myself literally falling asleep when I was reading it sometimes.
