About the Author
A. W. Moore is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford and Tutorial Fellow of St Hugh's College, Oxford. He is the author of three previous books: The Infinite (1990); Points of View (1997); and Noble in Reason, Infinite in Faculty: Themes and Variations in Kant's Moral and Religious Philosophy (2003). He is also the editor or co-editor of several anthologies, and his articles and reviews have appeared in numerous other scholarly publications.

Exciting book, if you are a philosopher.

Moore examines the history of metaphysics from Descartes to Deleuze. Moore defines metaphysics as "the most general attempt to make sense of things." Of course, there are rival definitions of metaphysics. Moore argues, convicingly, that even philosophers who have argued that metaphysics is impossible have done so as part of a general attempt to make sense of things: metaphysics remains an abiding part of philosophy. However, he sides with philosophers like Wittgenstein who ( as interpreted by Moore) believe that the attempt to pursue these metaphysical questions leads us beyond the resources of propositional language, producing words that may be helpful, but cannot be taken as literal truths about how things are.
Necessarily, a book like this is highly selective. Moore is at least clear on the reasons for making his selections - he is trying to pursue answers that have been offered to three basic questions: can we make sense of things that are transcendent, can we make sense of things in new ways, and can we be creative in our sense-making? He signals when he is taking sides on disputed points of interpretation, without getting bogged down in exegetical questions that would distract from his on-going narrative.
Anyone who thinks that analytica philosophers can afford to ignore continental philosophers, because they are enemies of reason, or that analytical philosophy should be ignored because it is nothing more than an apology for scientism, will have a lot to learn from this book.
