Functional Categories (Cambridge Studies in Linguistics), by Pieter Muysken

In every language there are descriptive lexical elements, such as evening and whisper, as well as grammatical elements, such as the and -ing. The distinction between these two elements has proven useful in a number of domains, but what is covered by the terms, lexical and grammatical, and the basis on which the distinction is made, appear to vary according to the domain involved. This book analyses the grammatical elements ('functional categories') in language, a topic that has drawn considerable attention in linguistics, but has never been approached from an integrated, cross-disciplinary perspective. Muysken considers functional categories from the perspective of grammar, language history, language contact and psychology (including child language and aphasia). Empirically based, the book examines the available converging evidence from these various disciplines, and draws on comparative data from a wide range of different languages.

The Cambridge History of WarfareFrom Brand: Cambridge University Press

A compelling subject, war is common to almost all known societies and almost all periods of history. The Cambridge History of Warfare is a comprehensive account of war in the West. The combined effort of seven leading experts, this book treats the history of all aspects of the subject: the development of warfare on land, seas, and air; weapons and technology; strategy and defense; discipline and intelligence; mercenaries and standing armies; cavalry and infantry; chivalry and blitzkreig; guerrilla assault and nuclear warfare. It places in context particular key elements in the history of armed engagement, from the Greek victory at Marathon, through the advent of gunpower in medieval England and France, to the jungle warfare of Vietnam and the strategic air strikes of the Gulf War. Throughout, there is an emphasis on the socio-economic aspects of military progress and how these help explain the rise of the West over the past two millenia to global military dominance.

Review
"Here is the story of war as the driving force in the rise of the West from the Greeks to our own day. Written by some of the world's leading experts in military history, this remarkable book combines scholarship with style. Without pulling any punches about the misery of the battlefield, it makes the case for the centrality of warfare in the history of the West and the world. Rarely has so much learning, lucidity, and wisdom been found between two covers."
-Barry Strauss, Cornell University, and author of The Battle of Salamis: The Naval Encounter that Saved Greece--and Western Civilization

"This is, simply, the best survey of the history of warfare in half a century. It explains what the Western way of war is, whence it came, and how it dominated the planet down to the present day. The product of the collaboration of some of the best military historians now writing, it offers judgments as well as a compelling narrative, an argument as well as a story. There can be no better introduction to the study of military history."
-Eliot A. Cohen, Robert E. Osgood Professor, Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies

"This is a thought-provoking, enjoyable book to read and a good one to have on hand for reference."
-Air Power

"...Parker and his collaborators have produced an impressive and immensely useful survey, within which are invaluable--not least because they are concise, clearly written and very readable--surveys of major conflicts. In addition, the contributions of the various authors are made to fit into a coherent overall pattern or thesis. The volume will no doubt--and deserves to--find a large market among those seeking among other things to set recent conflicts, and developments in the ways of war, into historical context."
-H-German, Christopher Storrs, Department of History, University of Dundee, United Kingdom

"...exceptional...beautifully illustrated...A highly readable book, and an interesting one, both for the expert and the amateur enthusiast. A must for college libraries." - U.S.I. Journal

"This is an attractive book. The numerous illustrations are marvelous and are integrated well with the text." -Journal of World History

"This book deserves close attention from the student of military afairs...a valuable overview of the history of warfare..." -Foreign Affairs

"...this is a well-written and handsomely-presented volume...the illustrations are pertinent, and the captions interesting...the range of scholarship is impressive...and it has all been pulled together by the finest military historian currently writing, who has also contributed several important sections." -History in Focus

A good editor makes all the difference
By B. Johnson
When I first picked up this book, I was a bit leary. I'm a history buff with an appreciation for academia, but decidedly not an academic. Thus, I don't want to read too much analysis as to the whats, wheres, whys, whens and ways things were done -- just give me the scoop and understand that I do want some detail.

It appears that the editor of this book, Geoffrey Parker, gets it. "The Cambridge History of Warfare" could have been too academic: Its writers are all PhDs whose writings are probably not the most accessible to the layperson. But the end result -- a readable and engaging recounting of the evolution of western warfare -- couldn't have been an accident. The tone and voice of the book is extremely consistent and engaging, and does not feature paragraph-long sentences or tongue-twisting jargon.

My only qualification to my positive feelings for this book is that the end chapters (regarding the world wars and the Cold War) seem to move away from the book's overall goal of charting the evolution of the West's style of warfare, becoming more of a blow-by-blow account of the battles that take place. Not to say that the point is abandoned -- it's not -- but it's less clear.

If you're interested in military history, this is a great book to check out.

It explains the role of the papacy in organizing recruitment campaigns through the propagandist activities of the mendicant friars. From the Back Cover
This study throws new light on both the history of the crusades and the mendicant orders in the thirteenth century. It describes the way in which the Franciscan and Dominican orders became involved in preaching the cross and examines their contribution to the crusading movement of the thirteenth century. The availability of a large number of trained preachers from the Franciscan and Dominican orders allowed the papacy to use them in order to provide the crusades with a well-organized and efficient propaganda back-up throughout Europe unknown before the thirteenth century. The book explains how the propaganda campaigns were organized and how the recruitment of crusaders took place. It shows that the mendicant friars became the most important group of crusade propagandists recruiting crusaders for virtually all thirteenth-century crusades. The book also shows that the friars were involved in providing finance for the crusades as part of their propaganda effort, despite their vows of absolute poverty. It also challenges the traditional pacifist view of the founder saints of the two orders by showing them to be supporters of the crusades themselves.

China and Vietnam: The Politics of Asymmetry, by Brantly Womack

In their three thousand years of interaction, China and Vietnam have been through a full range of relationships. Throughout all these fluctuations the one constant has been that China is always the larger power, and Vietnam the smaller. Yet China has rarely been able to dominate Vietnam, and the relationship is shaped by its asymmetry. The Sino-Vietnamese relationship provides the perfect ground for developing and exploring the effects of asymmetry on international relations. Womack develops his theory in conjunction with an original analysis of the interaction between China and Vietnam from the Bronze Age to the present.

Review
"Some countries are obviously stronger than others. Yet modern theories of international politics, deriving from Westphalian normative assumptions of sovereign equality, tend to overlook this fact, treating asymmetry as a form of abnormal, remediable imbalance. Brantly Womack, however, based on an up-to-date yet comprehensive overview of Sino-Vietnamese relations, develops a theory of international asymmetry with implications far transcending this case. His book will thus interest not only East Asian area specialists but all students of contemporary international affairs."
-Lowell Dittmer, University of California, Berkeley

"The book sets out to make a contribution to International Relations theory by examining examples of asymmetry in the power relations between China and Vietnam. He shows that, with a different starting-point, asymmetry could lead to a stability and normalcy that goes against current IR theories about asymmetric relationships between nations. The book offers a valuable correction to some current notions about asymmetry, in particular the idea that it makes for instability and could not be the basis for normalcy. By his close analysis of a two thousand year relationship between China and Vietnam, the author not only shows that the relationship was relatively stable in the past but also explains why it seems to have found a particular normalcy of its own today. There is no comparable work at this level of sophistication. It will be vital reading for all political scientists, especially scholars of international relations, and most historians of Asia."
-Wang Gungwu, National University of Singapore

"Relations between unequals define contemporary international politics, many of these relationships endure while Great Powers rise and fall, and mismanaged asymmetry has painful consequences for the strong as well as the weak. Largely ignored in the theoretical literature, relations between states of greatly different capabilities receive the attention it deserves in China and Vietnam: The Politics of Asymmetry. Brilliantly conceived and elegantly executed, this important amplification of structural realism is a fascinating dissection of a long and turbulent relationship as well."
-William S. Turley, Southern Illinois University

"Brantly Womack's book on relationship between China and Vietnam is an interesting analysis of this long and complex relationship. The study is innovative as it attempts to analyze the long history of relations between the two countries through the use of asymmetry as an analytical tool."
-Ramses Amer

"Womack's volume provides a major contribution for readers seeking an up-to-date, clearly presented, and stimulating assessment on how IR theory informs an understanding of recent Chinese foreign relations and vice versa."
-Robert Sutter, Georgetown University, Perspectives on Politics

Eye opening
By C. P. Barker
This book is astonishing in it's scholarship and depth. It's not the sort of thing you take to bed for a light read after a hard day. The information is densely packed and most pages contained at least a few spots where I had to stop and ponder the implications of what I'd just read. Like poetry, there's hardly a word that could be left out. I wouldn't recommend this to just anyone, but for those interested in either or both countries, Womack's brilliant and lucid description of the very human factors propelling international relations, the motives, fears and misunderstandings behind the headlines, will cause you to see China and Vietnam in a richer and more vital way.

Despite frequent consideration of the wisdom tradition in the Hebrew scriptures in recent years, there is still a redoubtable incertitude about the nature of wisdom writings as they relate to the larger intellectual traditions of the ancient near east cultures in general and about their influence on the Hebrew scriptures as a whole. In this festschrift for noted ancient near east Wisdom literature specialist John Adney Emerton, these problems are methodically promoted, assessed and appraised by an international assortment of specialists. In addition to full coverage of the wisdom books and other literature most frequently considered to have been affected by them, thematic studies also introduce the principal comparative sources among Israel's neighbors and discuss the place of wisdom in Israelite religion, theology and society. Insightful analysis
By Mary Schaeffer Conroy
The chapters that comprise this compilation discuss the factors that honed Stalin's political outlook and acumen, enabling him to manage the Soviet Union for over three decades. Based on newly accessible Russian archival materials, the chapters document that Stalin was intelligent, hardworking and politically astute--as well as needlessly, viciously wasteful of the economic and human capital of the USSR. As a non-Marxist--indeed an anti-Marxist--I found the chapter on Stalin as a Marxist irritating. Otherwise, the chapters in this book go far to explaining Stalin's rise to power and how he managed to stay in power so long.

Review
"Alan Beyerchen's essay on German, British, and American work on radar is alone worth the price of the book and is a splendid demonstration of how a cultural and scientific historian can make a major contribution to military history. The description of how culture, organization, and strategic predicament shape a military's reception of a new technology is simply brilliant." Foreign Affairs

"Military Innovation in the Interwar Period offers detailed insights into how to proceed with today's revolution in militray affairs. Those who find themselves today in the same position as Moffett, Towers, Liddell Hart, and Dowding did seventy years ago will want to study this book very closely." E.G.Hoffman, Naval War College Review

"This volume should make a big impact on American military academies and staff colleges, and would also make a good graduate course reader for students who have a reasonable foundation in the otherwise daunting historiography." Brian Bond, The International History Review

From the Back Cover
In 1914, the armies and navies that faced each other were alike down to the strengths of their companies and battalions and the designs of their battleships and cruisers. Differences were of degree rather than essence. During the interwar period, the armed forces grew increasingly asymmetrical, developing different approaches to the same problems. This study of major military innovations in the 1920s and 1930s explores differences in innovating exploitation by the six major military powers. The comparative essays investigate how and why innovation occurred or did not occur, and explain much of the strategic and operational performance of the Axis and Allies in World War II. The essays focus on several instances of how military services developed new technology and weapons and incorporated them into their doctrine, organization, and styles of operations.

Readable and Good
By Tom Munro
This is an anthology of various articles. Generally anthologies are the pits as they tend to lack a central them and the quality will vary. These articles are generally by the authors and as such they are of an even standard.
There are a number of chapters that discuss a range of issues from the use of Tanks to the development of the Aircraft Carrier.
The book is interesting although the area covered is naturally enormous and the amount of space that can be devoted to complex subjects is naturally limited. Despite this most of the essays are interesting and not only for what they say. In the first essay about the development of armored warfare by way of an aside the writer attacks Gueridian as a sycophant and also as a person whose reputation was largely the result of self publicity. Later the English theorists Fuller and Liddell Hart are critiqued as presenting overly schematic histories of the First World War which warped the truth to fit in with their own theories. Interestingly the essay then goes on to suggest that the first world war infantry battles were so complex that even now we struggle to understand them and for that reason it was no surprise that Douglas Haig had the problems that he did.
All in all an interesting book although again very much a starting point for the issue it covers.

Military Innovation in the Interwar Period
By Jake Zirkle
Williamson Murray and Allen R. Millett’s Military Innovation in the Interwar Period provides an excellent analysis of the various innovations that were developed between 1918 and 1939. Murray, the Matthew C. Horner Chair of Military Theory at the Marine Corps University, and Millett, the Raymond E. Mason, Jr. Professor of Military History and Associate Director of The Mershon Center at The Ohio State University, have complied an impressive collection of essays from numerous notable historians. Murray and Millet’s study “asks how one might study innovation and what patterns may characterize successful, guided changes.” (Murray/Millet, 3) As times change, the world that incubated the change and innovation that is being analyzed begins to disappear and be reformed; bringing with it a new set of circumstances that must be accounted for when attempting to apply lessons from the past.
In order to provide a cohesive anthology, Murray and Millet instructed their authors to “compare and contrast the different experiences of three or more national military organizations.” (Murray/Millet, 3) By giving specific guidelines for the authors to follow while constructing their pieces, Murray and Millett ensure that all parts of the anthology have a similar tone and it flows well throughout. The book is broken down into eleven essays, stemming from seven specific areas of innovation. The authors concentrated their study, and that of their contributors, to “armored warfare, amphibious warfare, strategic bombing, tactical bombing, submarine warfare, carrier aviation, and the development of radar.” (Murray/Millet, 3) The success of this work, however, is the individual voices that are distinguishable from essay to essay, yet they each feel like a part of a larger whole.
The individual experience of those nations involved in the First World War shaped their ambitions and focus for interwar innovations. Military Innovations in the Interwar Period discusses the various motivations for the national military organizations that were studied. The French saw a need for great national security, and thus built more trenches and defensive measures. The Germans, on the other hand, did not want to become trapped in another war of attrition, so they focused on mobile armor (tanks) that could smash through these First World War style defenses. The British saw a need to maintain their naval superiority, so they continued to expanded and modernize their fleet. The Americans and Japanese were competing for dominance in the Pacific, so they too were focusing on naval power, particularly aircraft carriers. Their experiences during the First World War and their immediate goals greatly influenced their means of innovation during the interwar period.
Military Innovations in the Interwar Period is certainly a respectable historical work, but it is also a guide for future paths of innovation. Throughout this study, the various authors explore how and why various national military organizations succeeded or failed. This crucial information is important for understanding the period between the First and Second World War, but it can also illuminate possible future paths for innovation.
