A Remarkable Insight Into An Unseen World

This is possibly the most interesting book I have read in several years. Considering that the book, strictly speaking, is an academic study, this makes it all the more remarkable that Michael Dutton has created a highly readable account of a shadowy world within a world: China's "floating population". Weaving his own insights into carefully selected excerpts of translations of Chinese scholars, government documents, and personal interviews, Dutton creates a vision of China virtually ignored by the Western media.
Dutton correctly asserts at the beginning of the book that the dominant image of China in the Western mind is the infamous incident of the lone dissident facing off against a tank in Tiananmen Square. Dutton's insight is reinforced by numerous examples, such as Mike Wallace's ineffectual interview of Jiang Zemin, where he brings up this precise incident, clearly oblivious to far more interesting topics. (See ...C-SPAN "when they" aired the much more revealing unedited version of the interview). However, while the outside world only imagines China, the daily reality of living in China's large cities, such as Shanghai, brings one face-to-face with the reality of the floating population; and if one is up to it, face-to-face with their often dismal fate.
This is a remarkable and disturbing book, and a must-read for anyone seeking to understand contemporary China.

China As Left Undefined By Most Academics

If you were in China and studied American history, you would never learn about slackers, pop music or be able to quote the movie the Princess Bride. Were you to then come to America, you would find yourself in an area whose history and political structure you understood, but in a society beyond what you had read and filled with people who can quote beer commercials you've never seen.
Fortunately for those outside China looking in, we have Dutton. Like Barme, Dutton looks at the stuff that most people miss: advertisements for STD cures on flyers in Beijing, new slang, fads that come and go without changing the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, but that slightly touch millions of lives in China. Without overstepping his bounds and claiming to have great insight in to the Chinese psyche based on these little facets of society, Dutton looks at the general attitudes on the street that he's gathered while in China. Apart from the propaganda bureau and the Public Security bureau (China's cops), no political actors pop up in his book. He quotes artists, triads and prostitutes for a look at China that lets students get a little of what they would have learned by living and slumming on the streets of Beijing.
This is not a great way to start understanding China, but is a fantastic addition to your bookshelf if you want to flesh out your academic learning with a bit of street-level detail.

Book of erratic quality

I guess this goes with the territory of how this book was put together, but some of the essays are good and some are bad. Some of the essays written by the Chinese have good context, but others are devoid of a context for the foreign reader or are too reflexively pro/anti China. Some of the essays are quite informative while others (such as those on tattoos) are simply someone trying to be profound. The introductions to each section can be totally glossed over.

However, this is a good book that puts together various aspects of China that are not talked about much and done in a way that balances perspectives.

An excellent science writer with intriguing ideas.

Polkinghorne is a splendid writer of science and a formidable mind with wonderful ideas. He has a control of language rivaling any science writer I have read. His "Quantum World" is a beautiful work. In "Beyond Science" he continues along similar lines with a particularly charming chapter discussing the personalities of great physicists with whom he has associated. He does a superb job describing what science is and how it works. Unfortunately he descends into scholarly ambiguity in his chapter on the human mind, with bloated sentences that run on and can easily confuse even the careful reader.
The ultimate purpose of the book is to present allowance for belief in a divine creator. Mostly this revolves around the Anthropic Principle (AP) - the idea that the existence of life is so sensitive to variation in physical constants of the universe that they must have been set by a creator for such life to exist. AP embraces evolution as the machinery for God's work. Polkinghorne is in a minority among physicists but the idea should cause some pause for reflection. He limits credit to the idea that since we are products of those constants it should not be surprising that they are what they are. As one who appreciates the power of science he understandably holds dear any notion based on reason that allows for God. But he appears to hold the idea too dearly, as adherents of AP often do. Attempting to make apparent improbabilities of constants set by chance understandable he notes Leslie's philosophical story of a fly hit by a bullet on a vast wall. He allows it two possible reasons for occurring, 1) because very many bullets were fired or 2) because a marksman took careful aim. Thus with intent, as a creator would have for tuning the constants with the aim of creating humans. Surely he knows but ignores two other possibilities, that the fly and bullet just happened to be at the same place in time or that the fly and bullet have some as yet undiscovered attraction for one another requiring they meet. This last is analogous to the constants having the values they do for as yet undiscovered requirements within the fabric of the Big Bang or Inflation or some other mechanism. Probabilities against events can sometimes carry too much weight. The probability that any four hands of thirteen cards are drawn in specific order from a deck of fifty-two is 1 in 4 billion trillion. Yet each time you draw four hands of thirteen cards, it happens. The cards dealt are completely determined by their position in the deck. We don't know what that is but it is fixed. Polkinghorne makes a few similar, but generally lesser transgressions to preserve his belief. I was repeatedly surprised and relieved to see him admit this on occasion and discuss opposing views.
The only unfortunate result of such a book will be that creationists use such material against science through misunderstanding and convenient abbreviation. Which is not a reason to stop such inquiry. I recommend "Beyond Science" for those at least mildly aquatinted with the field.

Simple, but profound, thinking about science and religion

Polkinghorne had a career as an academic physicist, and has also been theologically trained. He examines science from a religious viewpoint. He doesn't find a warfare between science and Christianity, but he does believe that scientists sometimes claim to know more than they should about metaphysical issues.

Polkinghorne deals intelligently with both physics and biology. One chapter gives capsule evaluations of the legacies of important scientists, including Stephen Hawking.

This book does not claim that the earth was created a few thousand years ago, but it does claim that science has by no means ruled out an Intelligent Designer.

John Polkinghorne is a scientist wise man, and in this book he moderate the tone about what science can do and what is religion knowledge. Science help us to understand the world we are living and to have better life. Haven said that, in our daily life we speak the language of emotions and feelings. it is what we are. The problem with Human specie is that after the nature shape our body, it give us a brain which is "the same asking the question and giving the answer".With mathematics we can transcend our immediat reality but everything is happen in our brain which a part of the "system".We are not "WATCHING" things from outside but from inside". It is dazzling when they give you the "answer" and ask you to find what is the "question".

About the Author
Kenneth R. Hammond is Emeritus Professor of Psychology and Former Director of the Center for Research on Judgment and Policy at the University of Colorado, Boulder. A past president of the Society for Judgment and Decision-Making, he is the author of Judgments Under Stress (OUP, 1999), Human
Judgment and Social Policy (OUP, 1996) and editor of The Essential Brunswik (OUP, 2001).


Jonathan Baron is Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Baron's research is based on the utilitarian idea that society should be organized to do the most good (or to maximize utility). Some of his research examines people's intuitive principles for decision-making and moral judgement, and explores how these principles can stand in the way of doing the most good. Baron is the author of Rationality and Intelligence (1985); Thinking and Deciding (1988, 1994, 2000), a widely used textbook for advanced undergraduates and beyond; Morality and Rational Choice (1993), Judgement Misguided: Intuition and Error in Public Decision Making (1998); and Against Bioethics (2006). He has also co-edited three books and published over 175 papers and chapters. He is the editor of the journal Judgement and Decision Making, and he is currently president of the Society for Judgement and Decision Making. He holds a BA from Harvard and a PhD from Michigan and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Psychological Society.

The major criticism of this book is the omission of any discussion of John Maynard Keynes's unique and highly original contributions to decision making under risk,uncertainty,and ignorance that were made, long before Ellsberg,Tversky and Kahneman were even born,in the A Treatise on Probability in 1921.Keynes,not Ellsberg,was the first to specify an index to take into account the relative credibility of the available information base upon which the decision maker would base his probability calculations.Keynes's index specifies the weight of the evidence,w,as a measure of the completeness of the relevant information currently and potentially available.w is defined on the unit interval [0,1],0

About the Author
John Foran is Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he is also involved with the programs on Islamic and Near Eastern Studies, Latin American and Iberian Studies, and Women, Culture, and Development. His books include Fragile Resistance: Social Transformation in Iran from 1500 to the Revolution (1993), A Century of Revolution: Social Movements in Iran (1994), and Theorizing Revolutions (1997).

Great book!

John Foran presents a highly sophisticated theoretical framework for the analysis of revolutions on the periphery of world capitalist system. He combines objective factors like dynamism of dependent development, attitude of dominant imperialist powers and subjective factors like class alliances and political culture of opposition to propose a theory that explains why revolutions in the Third World happen and why not all of the sucseed.
