can be used for most verions of Matlab

[A review of the 2nd edition.]

The 2nd edition includes descriptions of Matlab 7. But in fact, much of the text seems unchanged from the 1st edition. Because while Matlab continues to add refinements, it is by now very stable in its core functionality. Thus, at least for beginners, the book is useful, regardless of which precise version of Matlab is on your machine.

Many of the examples are indeed quite easy. The underlying maths knowledge is at the undergraduate level. Say for 1st or 2nd year undergrad maths courses. One example uses Lagrange's equation in classical mechanics. That seems to be about as advanced as matters get.

The graphical capability of Matlab given by the book is equivalent to what Mathematica provides. Though perhaps the latter has somewhat spiffier graphics, the graphical functionality is about the same.

About the Author
Professor Thomas Hales is Andrew Mellon Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. He is best known for his solution to the 400-year-old Kepler conjecture and is also known for the proof of the honeycomb conjecture. He is currently helping to develop technology that would allow computers to do mathematical proofs. His honors include the Chauvenet Prize of the MAA, the R. E. Moore Prize, the Lester R. Ford Award of the MAA, the Robbins Prize of the AMS and the Fulkerson Prize of the Mathematical Programming Society.

An important book

Kepler conjectured that no packing of non-overlapping, equal-sized spheres in 3-space achieved a density greater than the density of the "cannonball packing". Hales managed to prove this conjecture, but the proof is long, sometimes subtle, and relies on extensive computer calculations. The referees of his paper were unwilling to give the paper their unreserved seal of approval, so Hales set out to redo his proof, this time in a computer-verifiable manner. This is the most rigorous standard of proof available to mathematicians today.

This volume is a roadmap: it outlines the computer-verifiable proof that is currently under construction. But this book is not intended for computers: it gives the human reader a good and illustrative overview of the mathematics that goes into the proof. As such, it is a no-brainer buy for any mathematician with an interest in the topic!

The Illustrations are clear and beautifully organized. Without doubt, there would be international interest in the science represented in this publication.

Nice idea, but needs some work

In a style typical of Schank's writings, this book contains a number of grandiose claims about human memory without much support. The first two-thirds of this volume present a review of the much of Schank's previous work. The title is Dynamic Memory Revisited after all! The last third of the book, however, presents two new themes: nonconscious knowledge and goal-based scenarios for education. While he has extensively discussed goal-based scenarios elsewhere, the ideas relating to nonconscious knowledge appear to be new. Unfortunately, the exciting ideas associated with nonconscious knowledge and the "racing mind" reads more as a call for research than a presentation of scientific findings.
While Dynamic Memory Revisited provides a good overview of much of Schank's work, the poor quality of the writing tends to frequently get in the way. Schank's frequent restatement of ideas reads as a random narrative rather than an updating of important work. This book is worth reading for its ideas, but any reader must be willing to ignore presentation and detailed content in favor of high-level ideas.

If you are looking for strict information on AI, this is the wrong book... it talks about learning in human memory in terms of dynamic (always changing) memory structures. There is adequate discussion of scripts, MOPs and TOPS but not enough to model AI on.
While the writing style is a little dense, on reflection it's raw-ness helps to illustrate some of what Schank is saying. He updates ideas throughout the book, building to new information in the last chapters on case-based reasoning and non-concious knowledge. This is basically how learning and memory work: the mind builds on what it knows to synthesize new structures.

A review of Dynamic Memory Revisited

Schank is responsible for a number of good ideas in Artificial Intelligence/Cognitive Science; conceptual dependency, scripts, and case-based reasoning among others. I read the present book in order to find any new gems Schank might have dug up. While I believe that you can mine Schank's work for good ideas there are some shortcomings as well. There is no complete theory presented. You could not write AI code based on this book. Furthermore, I would want such a theory and would have to test it before I would accept any of Schank's suggestions for how education should be changed. I find many of Schank's ideas about education faddist. But then much of the current discussion on education is nonsense. School is work. Period. If you don't like work you will not like school. So what.

Different opinion, but still a great book

I remember one of my professors had said to me: "If you only read one book about SOE reform in China, you must read this one."
His recommendation cannot be more correct. The writer has undergone an in-depth investigation of SOEs and their reform in China. The three case studies, namely, Angang, Magang and Shougang, are all very comprehensive. For anyone interested in corporatization of these SOEs, Chapter 5 is a must-read for them. In all, the book is a tremendous achievement when you consider that the writer is a Westerner.
The writer thinks that the illness of SOEs is due to the continuous supply of soft budget from the government and state-owned bankers. The ownership issue - whether these enterprises are state-owned or in private hand - is not very important. However, my opinion is that you must not be a player when you also assume the role of referee. If this reform is to be successful, a detachment to government is necessary.
Anyway, this is an excellent book.

Unique theory of the state owned enterprise problem

The author presents a different perspective on China's state owned enterprise problem. He contends that the problem is not an allocation of property rights issue. Instead, a supposed free market system has been overlaid over a still partially existing command economy. A fascinating theory. If the author is right, China's problems are very deep and will be extremely difficult to solve.

Steinfeld displays an uncommon ability to view today's China in a fresh light, unbound by the constraints of conventional Western thinking. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to understand modern Chinese economic development and the elusive prospects for China's full participation as a world economic leader.

Brilliant and delightful

The good doctors Shelley are my favorite dermatology authors; I have read and enjoyed many of their pithy, insightful and truly helpful texts. I learn more in a single page of reading Shelley than in some chapters of other texts!

This book, while different in style, is no different in terms of the outcome. It is more colloquial and more story-like, but as riveting and densely packed as ever. There are multiple levels of learning: each case, while unique, has something to teach about a symptom, syndrome or presentation, while the overarching theme is one of looking more deeply and thinking about underlying causes for disease. An outstanding book!

A must for every student of medicine and frustrated patient

This is a powerful and important book written by two pre-eminent physicians discussing 62 intriguing and remarkable cases of "orphan" patients who did not have a proper diagnosis or treatment for their unique condition.

These eloquent vignettes are relevant and important to medical students, residents, and physicians, and most certainly to patients who have perplexing and challenging conditions for which diagnosis or treatment are lacking.

This book uses the inquisitive nature of Sherlock Holmes to deduce and aid the forgotten or dismissed patient. It inspires me as a physician to ask more questions and seek more answers, and in the words of Churchill, "never, never, never give up."

I highly recommend it.

Old arguments revisited

The books offers a conscise rendering of the role played by the figure of the female in the investigation of the relationship between the orient and occident. The argument itself is not new and does not escape the customary framework of the critique of orientlist discourse. It however, contextualises the issues at hand within the framework of bio-power and its rule in shaping the subjectivity of both coloniser and colonised. The title suggests that it is an attempt at offering a feminist reading of orientalism which I think has been achieved more than once by other post-colonial feminists. I gave it four stars for style and lucidity but not originality

A unique work incorporating theory on subjectivity, Orientalism, and Turkish women's experiences with nationalistic currents at home. I loved reading every word of the book, especially her analysis of the Turkish nationalism.
