About the Author
David P. Forsythe is Charles J. Mach Distinguished Professor, and University Professor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He has published extensively on different aspects of International Relations including Human Rights in International Relations (Cambridge, 2000), which has been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Turkish, Korean, and Bulgarian, and most recently, Human Rights and Diversity: Area Studies Revisited (edited with Patrice McMahon, 2004). He is also the general editor of the new edition of The Encyclopedia of Human Rights.

About the Author
Jonathan E. Adler is Professor of Philosophy at Brooklyn College and the Graduate School, City University of New York. His D.Phil. in philosophy is from Oxford University. His main areas of research are epistemology, philosophy of psychology, informal logic, ethics, and philosophy of education. In 2002, he published Belief's Own Ethics.

Lance Rips received his Ph.D. from the Psychology Department at Stanford University in 1974 and taught at the University of Chicago from 1974 to 1993. Since 1993, Rips has been a Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University. He is on the editorial board of Cognition, Public Opinion Quarterly, and Informal Logic.

The best available anthology

I happen to have written an earlier book with this title, a text that McGraw-Hill kept in print for more than ten years, so I have considerable interest in the topic, and still publish/teach in the area. That book isn't referenced in this one, so I'm not favorably biased towards it, and might be unfavorably biased if touchy, but as you'll see, I'm not.

This book is an authoritative collection of current and recent work in the multidisciplinary interface between psychology, computer science, critical thinking, and education. It's slanted towards to the AI side, weak on the critical thinking/informal logic side, which is a serious weakness, but essential for the researcher in the middle of these areas or the advanced grad seminar instructor in the area.

Mt. Enlightenment

What we have here, taken as a whole, represents an incredible achievement: an overarching anthology of 'state of the art' papers addressing the major issues in the field of logic and it's interface with the burgeoning scientific research into human cognition. Although the table of contents is not accessible on Amazon, it can and should be reviewed on CUP's website by any individual intending to invest money and time in this massive tome, for that investment must be substantial. Written by the usual suspects, highly regarded and paid expert scholars from the top universities in the occident, the book is weighty in every sense. Beginning with the basics, it requires some effort simply to remove it from the shelf and port it to a reading table. I do not pretend to have read the work in its entirety or to any extent approximating such an effort. In fact, I would challange anyone, even those imbued with the old-fashioned enlightment reverence for reason to complete a reading of "Reasoning" in an uninterupted, sustained series of readings. One would really have to be gung ho to do that to oneself.
I would further claim that it is more than likely that there are less 5,000 persons (you don't have to translate) in the world who could understand all that is written here, in its stated analyses and their implications, and in the highest probability, far less. By it's very inception, the project expressed here is somewhat, if not, decisively, exclusive. One must consider this observation, when one reads such advice as given above that one should have a knowledge of "introductory logic" before acquiring this volume. After all, most of us are interested in knowing more about reasoning and how to do it better. Folks, one needs a lot more than an "introductory" knowledge of logic before engaging the vast majority of papers in this book.
To be specific, let's take two of the contributors: Mark Sainsbury and the late, great Bernard Williams. Sainsbury writes here on paradox. He published a book on the subject years ago, widely circulated in academic circles. Sainsbury writes for the advanced student. There are many studies of aporetics, notably those of Rescher and, more recently, Sorenson, which explain the issues surrounding this important cognitive phenomenon in terms accessible to the common reader who has not been through the logic mills of St. Andrews, UCLA, or the equivalent. A similar observation could be made regarding every paper in the book: for the non-specialist, there are more accessible paths to understanding this information to be found elsewhere. Williams, whose oeuvre is dappled with brilliant, if not occasionally, monumental, insights, was regarded as equally often confusing and opaque in his writing by even his most adoring students, who regularly expressed their gratitude for the privilege of engaging him in conversation where he could readily explain the thicker passages in his arguments.
The upshot is that this encyclopediac pinnacle of scholarship will, as it should, proudly grace the shelf of many an institutional library, as a research tool. But beyond the select few who are involved in these debates diectly within the field, I expect it to be little read. While most of us enjoy a good day hike, or even a week's jaunt through a section of a moderately challenging mountain range, few, however admiringly we may look at it, would attempt Everest. And this problem, which emerges from our inherent limitations as a perceived self within a humanity, is indicative of the very crux of the downfall of the Enlightenment project as a whole: as with instantiations of strong AI, the more rationality replicates its own devices at increasingly rarified levels of refinement (or what it assumes to be refinements of understanding), the more irrational in its justifications it becomes. Or, to put it in the words or one of my introductory logic students who has the destiny of coming of age at the most challenging moment for the survival of the human race, "After a while, don't this stuff just give you a headache??"

About the Author
A. Colin Cameron is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis. His research and teaching interests span a range of topics in microeconometrics. He is a past director of the Center on Quantitative Social Science at the University of California, Davis and is currently an associate editor of the Stata Journal. He is coauthor (with Pravin K. Trivedi) of the first edition of Regression Analysis of Count Data (Cambridge, 1998) and of Microeconometrics: Methods and Applications (Cambridge, 2005).

Pravin K. Trivedi is Distinguished Professor and J. H. Rudy Professor of Economics at Indiana University, Bloomington. His research and teaching interests are in microeconometrics and health economics. He served as co-editor of the Econometrics Journal from 2000 to 2007 and has been on the board of Journal of Applied Econometrics since 1988. He is coauthor (with A. Colin Cameron) of the first edition of Regression Analysis of Count Data (Cambridge, 1998) and of Microeconometrics: Methods and Applications (Cambridge, 2005).

This is a very thorough and authoritative treatment of regression methods for analyzing count data. It is very current and covers many topics not commonly found in books on point processes. Economic applications are emphasized but the broader applicability of the methods is eluded to.
The authors intent is for this book to be read by researchers, graduate students and practitioners in the many fields that make use of count data. Chapter 1 introduces count data, the Poisson distribution and the Poisson process and also shows how the Poisson process can be derived based on the assumption of independent and identically distributed exponential waiting times. It concludes with specification of regression models for counts and a number of practical examples where modeling count data would naturally arise. The importance of the integers is emphasized with the quote from Kronecker at the beginning of the chapter, "God made the integers, all the rest is the work of man."

Chapter 2 provides an extensive treatment of model specification and estimation methods. The authors cover many approaches and provide excellent references to the literature. Generalized linear models provide one common approach in the statistics literature and these methods are well described in this chapter.

Poisson regression is the main topic of Chapter 3 but the chapter goes on to discuss negative binomial models that handle overdispersion. An example of data on doctor's visits is used to illustrate the techniques. Statistical tests for overdispersion are also presented. A variety of other modeling techniques are also provided.

More general models including mixture models are considered in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 looks at ways of evaluating potential models. Chapter 6 provides some real economic data from health services to illustrate the methods of the earlier chapters.

Chapter 7 covers time series analysis for integer data. The authors provide information and literature that is not standard in a text on time series analysis but is applicable to count data.

Subsequent chapters deal with more complexity including multivariate data,longitudinal data analysis and measurement error models. Important recent developments in bootstrap methods and Bayesian statistics are covered in the context of problems for which these methods have demonstrated their value.

This is a great reference book for statisticians and econometricians interested in problems involving counting processes. It could also be used for a graduate school text on point process regression.

Well most prople are used in telling stories about the unapliability of economics in real life. That math and logic can not apply to most economic books! Most of the people say that economics are only theory.I will tell you that this book is one of a kind, reading it you will be able to have a better understanding of Econometrics.If you have enough money to pay the rent and some left buy this book ! its better than food!
