His scholarly articles have appeared in journals such as Energy Policy, Economic Inquiry, The Journal of Legal Studies and the Journal of Public Policy. For seven years, Professor Grossman was a regular columnist on economic issues for the Indianapolis Star and he has contributed commentary to many magazines and newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal and The Christian Science Monitor.

Good material, but out of date

Cassedy and Grossman present exactly what the title promises, an introduction to energy, with attention to resources, technology, and society. The book deals broadly with patterns of usage and demand-drivers over time and geography, and periodically delivers minute details about the mechanisms of various energy technologies. The authors explain basic issues surrounding petroleum and other hydrocarbons, fission, biofuels, wind, geothermal, solar, and horizon technologies.
But, at ten years old, the book is lacking. Obviously, there's no mention of potential changes to off-shore drilling policy, the development of Canadian unconventional hydrocarbons, or the outcomes of the September 11 attacks on the energy industries. Moreover, the current edition does not seem significantly updated from the previous; charts and graphs end in the 1980s, and the Soviet Union receives a good deal of attention.
However, the book serves as a sort of de facto recent history of energy and society. This book fills a gap between developments and trends in energy over the last decade, and the numerous works written about energy in the post-WW2 to 1970s timeframe (though this book does also address the latter). If you're looking for something to bring you up to speed on current energy technology and policy issues, this probably isn't the book. If, on the other hand, you want to understand energy issues leading up to the current decade, this is a good resource.

Poorly Bound - Book Falls Apart

I bought Jose and Saletan new and the binding fell apart within about a month of light usage (classes started 9/29 and I'm posting on 10/21). Where light usage is being defined as opening the book, turning pages, reading the pages, and then closing the book. Occasionally the book is open for a few hours on a couple pages while working through a few exercises. Very disappointed that the spine broke, sections of pages became 'unglued' from the spine from the bottom up, and eventually by turning the pages they seem to magically 'unhinge' themselves from the spine/glue.

Also note that I, as a student, have been through a lot of text books and have treated them in varying degrees of care (I used Griffith's EM heavily but carefully and it is standing the test of time, while my copy of Shankar's Principles of QM definitely shows the beating I put into it). But this book is by far the easiest and fastest a book has ever fallen apart on me.

Bottom Line: This book is too expensive for how quickly and easily it can fall apart.

A great text

As some readers noted and others found to their frustration, this is an advanced text. Familiarity with mechanics, tensor notation, and similar are helpful to get the most out of this text. That said, it is a coherent exposition of classical mechanics in a modern light and will help the student develop a more advanced outlook on mechanics problems. I used it to study for my PhD qualifying examination.

An excellent book on a fundamental subject

Classical mechanics often falls by the wayside in a modern physics curriculum. However, there are times when an understanding of subtle issues in this field are simply necessary for progress in current research directions. At times like these, one is all-too-often forced to turn to older texts such as Goldstein or directly to the literature of a field with which one is rarely intimately familiar. It is therefore a great pleasure to find a text such as Jose and Saletan's, a highly modern, extremely complete and very readable textbook on mechanics at an advanced level.
The book covers all of the standard topics of a graduate mechanics course (Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics, rigid bodies, etc.) as well as more modern topics such as chaotic dynamics. All these subjects are treated in great detail and both in very physical and very formal languages. Most importantly, all of these discussions (including the formal ones!) are packed with completely worked examples which allow one to begin to use these techniques without attempting to decipher formal proofs.
The breadth of topics covered and the quality of the writing make this book a valuable addition to any physicist's workbench.

She situates Kant's views in relation both to his predecessors and to contemporary debates, explaining his Critical philosophy as a response to the failure of rationalism and the challenge of skepticism. Paying special attention to Kant's notoriously difficult vocabulary, she explains the strengths and weaknesses of his arguments, while leaving the final assessment up to the reader. Intended to be read alongside the Critique (also published by Cambridge University Press as part of The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant in Translation), this guide is accessible to readers with little background in the history of philosophy, but should also be a valuable resource for more advanced students.

Excellent guide for non-experts

Having struggled off and on to understand the philosophy of Kant for at least thirty years, I have much appreciated this very helpful book. However, I think it is of value only if you use it as an auxiliary aid in reading the "Critique of Pure Reason." It is by no means a substitute for reading the original. To mention just a few merits of the book: Most importantly, I think, it points up those spots where Kant is confusing or contradicts himself. For example, he introduces a bewildering array of terms (some of which he made up, while others are ordinary words to which he attaches special meanings) but then he often ignores his own definitions and uses terms interchangeably or one term when he should be using another. This book will alert the reader to many of these danger spots, thus eliminating some frustrating roadblocks. The book also frankly faces the fact that some of Kant is incurably obscure, but offers good counsel on what he probably meant. The book is probably written for students, which is by no means my category, but is good for anyone interested in Kant. I also recommend "A Kant Dictionary" (H. Caygill) and "The Cambridge Companion to Kant's Critique of Pure Reason," but I don't think they are as helpful as this one. Thanks to this book I have finally succeeded in reading a good portion of Kant and (I think) even understood a large part of it. Amazing!
