Introduction to Energy: Resources, Technology, and Society, by Edward S. Cassedy, Peter Z. Grossman

Energy issues such as pollution, resource depletion, global warming, nuclear power and waste are problems demanding timely solutions. This book provides a critical examination of the resources, market forces, and social impacts of modern energy production. The book addresses the dilemmas that have arisen due to society's crucial dependence on energy, particularly fossil fuels, and explores the available alternative energy producing technologies. The second edition has increased emphasis on those issues at the forefront of the current energy debate: energy sustainability, climate change, and the radical restructuring of the power industry due to deregulation. Assuming no prior technical expertise and avoiding complex mathematical formulation. The second edition, like the first, will be especially useful as a textbook for undergraduate programs in Science, Technology and Society (STS), and as a supplementary text in a variety of courses that touch on energy studies, including environmental and technology policy, environmental, mineral and business law, energy and resource economics.

Good material, but out of date
By Amazon Customer
Cassedy and Grossman present exactly what the title promises, an introduction to energy, with attention to resources, technology, and society. The book deals broadly with patterns of usage and demand-drivers over time and geography, and periodically delivers minute details about the mechanisms of various energy technologies. The authors explain basic issues surrounding petroleum and other hydrocarbons, fission, biofuels, wind, geothermal, solar, and horizon technologies.
But, at ten years old, the book is lacking. Obviously, there's no mention of potential changes to off-shore drilling policy, the development of Canadian unconventional hydrocarbons, or the outcomes of the September 11 attacks on the energy industries. Moreover, the current edition does not seem significantly updated from the previous; charts and graphs end in the 1980s, and the Soviet Union receives a good deal of attention.
However, the book serves as a sort of de facto recent history of energy and society. This book fills a gap between developments and trends in energy over the last decade, and the numerous works written about energy in the post-WW2 to 1970s timeframe (though this book does also address the latter). If you're looking for something to bring you up to speed on current energy technology and policy issues, this probably isn't the book. If, on the other hand, you want to understand energy issues leading up to the current decade, this is a good resource.

Great book
By Z. Johnson
I needed this book for a class. It's a little out-dated, but most of it is still relevant to today's energy concerns.
