Important review of cognitive skills for teaching and learning

This book is a very important addition to our field of cognitive psychology. Moseley et al offer an extensive and careful review of cognitive skill taxonomies. A commendable approach, with accessible descriptions and critique.

The review covers a specific domain in cognitive research: theories on the structure of how knowledge is organized. None of the frameworks in the book entirely solve the problem, but this book is a major step in the right direction. Education needs to improve our ability to organize knowledge, so that we can use knowledge to its full potential.

The book does not include neurocognitive research. The results from fMRI's are showing that the physical traces will not give us the entire picture of how our brain works, at least not with the current methods. Efforts toward theory, as this book promotes, must work in tandem with neurocognitive research. Thank you to Moseley et al!!

Thank God for Upgrades!

If you're an English language teacher stuck in classrooms with 20 plus students for 30-40 hours a week and your text is a disaster your whole life can be hell. You hate your work and your students hate you. What do you do? Teach something else ? But in the end you always have to come back to the text... This has been the dilemma for teachers at my school over the last few years. While Interchange 1 was pretty good and Interchange 2 OK Interchange 3 was a nightmare-the more so as we realized the weakness was in the book and not in our teaching. So New Interchange 3 is something of a revelation- the changes in this book are not merely cosmetic,they are extensive. The layout and presentation of the grammar is sometimes so good I am in awe of how good this is and how bad the original book was. You realize there is real art to writing an English language teaching book- an art only really appreciated by the hands-on teacher. The other stunning improvement in this book is the content. It's so much more interesting, more contemporary, relevant and personal. So on 2 counts; grammar presentation and content this book is a winner. It's only on the third pillar of communicative language teaching- activities- that there is a weakness. The "Teacher's" book is lazy, unimaginative and unhelpful most of the time. A teacher needs to look elsewhere or in his or her own head for activities. Nonetheless, the improvements in NEW INTERCHANGE 3 are such that I can walk into a classroom with enthusiasm rather than dread.

Salvador Dali's art and writing, 1927-1942 examines the evolution of Dali's art during the 1920s and 1930s, when he was associated, first with the Catalan avant-grade, and then with the Surrealist group in Paris. During this period, Dali's painting style changed radically, a phenomenon which has never been fully accounted for in the extensive literature on this subject. Haim Finkelstein demonstrates that Dali's writing, in which he explicated theoretical systems such as Paranoia-Criticism and other ideas adopted from Freud, were important for the active and critical role that they played in his development as an artist and often controversial figure. His study is the first to examine these writings in detail as the foundation for the evolution of Dali's unique artistic vision.

Disappointing

I was under the impression that this was a collection of Dali's art and, especially, his writing, in translation, with appropriate commentary by the editor. Instead it's a deeply serious academic study of Dali's work during the period under consideration. This is fine, and from what I've read, Haim Finkelstein has done a good job approaching this crazy man/genius. But what I wanted was translations of Dali's difficult and hard-to-find texts. I will read Finkelstein's book, but it's a big degree away from what I thought I was getting.

A True Cello Lover's Book

This book is not an instruction on how to practice the cello but gives an historical perspective about how the cello was developed back in Europe to today's modern cello. It does however discuss the physics of playing easier and with less stress. It is for those who want to know everything about the violoncello not just playing it. It is informative and very interesting. So if you love the cello and want to know just about everything about it, get this book.

the making of a cello

I bought this book to give to a friend for Christmas. He had just dusted off his Cello after 20+ years and needed some refresher info. Unfortunately, this was not the book for him. This is a book of esays about the history of and how to make a cello. It gives great detail in that aspect. There isn't really any included music or actual methods.

Some good some bad

An interesting overview of the cello, from history to instrument description and acoustics. If your main interest is history, though, this is not a great choice. I was disappointed with the chapters 4 - 6 by Margaret Campbell - overview of virtuosi from past centuries, the writing was very boring. The rest of the book is fun, though.

Good companion

This is a good book for students of cinema as well as for those who simply like movies. It brings important information on the latest postures concerning film adaptation. The only thing I did not like about it is that the kindle version may have a problem, because when I use my native language (Brazilian Portuguese) to add comments, later some of the words turn into strange characters. That's my one and only complaint.

About the Author
Michael Charney is Project Professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo and Reader in Southeast Asian and Imperial History at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Professor Charney is a historian of empire, technology and culture, whose research focuses on Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, with particular attention to Burma/Myanmar, Tanzania and Ghana.

Seems like a good introduction

I hesitated to review this book as I do not feel qualified to judge its contents completely. However, having just read a second book with a similar focus (Steinberg's "Burma/Myanmar, what everyone needs to know") and seeing that the only other review was quite critical I decided to voice my opinion. Speaking as a non-expert I found this book quite good and would rate it with four or five stars. The author is a respected scholar and the publisher is a respected press. The writing is clear and easy to understand although it is dry and academic in style. (Some of us don't mind that at all.) It touches on many things in the colonial and post-colonial era and was quite informative in many ways. It cites sources well allowing one to confirm statements easily. I recommend it highly.

This books gives a quick guild to the forces that move (or Don't) in Modern Burma has nice easy to understand chapters that wrap up nicely at the end.

This is an excellent book. Concise

This is an excellent book. Concise, yet detailed, it provides an excellent introduction to modern Myanmar. I was able to spend 14 days in Myanmar in 2014, and having read this book made the trip all the more enjoyable and educational. I highly recommend it as a first introduction to Myanmar for those wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the country's history and politics.
