The model of English that should be used in classrooms has long been a subject of debate. World Englishes, Implications for International Communication and English Language Teaching, (with an accompanying audio CD) describes selected varieties of World Englishes, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of selecting a particular variety from the point of view of both teachers and learners. It aims to examine and re-evaluate concepts such as 'standard', 'variety', 'native speaker' and 'non-native speaker', and to validate the role played by multilingual and multicultural English language teachers, arguing that context and learner needs should determine the variety to be taught. World Englishes was shortlisted for the 2008 British Council Innovations Awards.

An impressive primer to a complicated subject
By Eric H. Roth
Do the English in England speak the same English as the Americans, the Jamacians, the South Africans, the Australians, the Irish, and the Indians? Should they? What does it mean if a majority of English speakers are actually English as a second language speakers? Can we actually assert that one version of English is more correct, formal, or proper than other forms?

Linguist Andy Kirkpatrick raises these and many other provocative questions in his exceptionally documented book "World Englishes: Implications for International Communication and English Language Teaching" published by Cambridge. The enclosed audio CD might be the best, brief introduction to the subject as you hear a wide diversity of voices and accents tell stories and read poems in .... English? Or is it Englishes? As a native of the United States, I had little problem with the women from Charlotte, North Carolina describe her childhood picking cotton or Downeast Maine woman who switches accents and vocabulary depending on her audience. Yet I struggled - and struggled is the right word - to comprehend Africans, Caribbeans Islanders, and Irish on this CD. If the goal is international communication, than many folks on the CD fail to communicate with English as an International language standard.
Yet Kirkpatrick argues that English is spoken in particular contexts to specific audiences. What is proper, Kirkpatrick, argues depends more on circumstances and purposes than absolute standards. As a result, he is far less comfortable than most ESL or English language teachers in asserting the "correctness" of pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, and even grammatical functions.

This provocative book makes a powerful case for a politically correct, and increasingly influential, perspective. English language teachers, immigration activists, linguistics, and standardized test creators will find the 257-page book fascinating. This critically acclaimed book also deserves to be read by language policy experts.
Was I persuaded that World Englishes is a healthier concept than International English? No, not really. But I'm very glad that I had the chance to read this scholarly work.

The Archaeology of Ancient Greece (Cambridge World Archaeology), by Professor James Whitley

The Archaeology of Ancient Greece provides an up-to-date synthesis of current research on the material culture of Greece in the Archaic and Classical periods. Its rich and diverse material has always provoked admiration and even wonder, but it is seldom analyzed as a key to our understanding of Greek civilization. Dr. Whitley shows how the material evidence can be used to address central historical questions for which literary evidence is often insufficient, and he also situates Greek art within the broader field of Greek material culture.

Review
"It is an excellent account of what the discipline is, where it has been, and where it is now. Especially good is Whitley's tracking of the influences on the contemporary scene of science, structuralism, and the 'new' archeaology." Paul D. Scotton, University of Washington

"In this invaluable and long-needed book on Greek archaeology, Whitley begins with a discussion on the nature of classical art, then draws on his own expertise to present an outstanding account of the early development of Greek culture.... Accessible to a general archaeological readership, this book is essential for academic libraries, where it will become a standard sourcebook." Choice

About the Author

Tell me more !! Tell me more !!
By ex nihilo
This book is mainly a general synthesis of the state of archaeological knowledge and research on the Greek Archaic and Classical periods, with some great explanation of the most important controversies (such as the gender division in society, the continuity of religion from the Dark Age, or the Orientalizing influence, etc) to be found in the study of this culture and period. However, the author takes great pains with his writing, so as not to have another dry accademic book with piles of extremely interesting information buried under tones of arid sentences.

As a result, you soon find yourself immerse in a fascinating, colourful world, so different from what many classicists want to give as as "Classic Greek Culture" as to really be a totally "New World". Here, temples and stoas are painted in bright colours, fire-eaters and dancers perform in the Agoras next to philosophers who discuss ethics. This is not, however, a way to make Greek culture look less important than it was. I think the author succeeds in communicating to his readers what the archaeologists have known for some time. These very same archaeologists, though, had to first overcome the reticence shown by the "Classicist Establishment" to consider the overwhelming evidence that Ancient Greece had very little to do with what they had been teaching at Western universities for decades (if not centuries).

Thus, the author begins his book by making the point that much of the vision of "Classical Greece" that we have inherited is really a 18th-century-cum-Victorian Eurocentrist construct, a somewhat imperialistic (one could even say [...]?)ideal of what a "perfect society" should be, and an excuse to model many typical western institutions on.

But don't get the wrong idea that this is the aim of the book. As I said before, the author just intends to give an up-to-date synthesis on what archaeologists have to say. Of course, when the subject is one so dear to,and near, the very core of European identity, controversy is unavoidable. Whitley just states the most important of these controversies, but sometimes, and although he doesn't seem keen on taking positions, his own views show through.

On the whole, the world glimpsed through the pages of this book is so fascinating that I found I needed to know more about some of the issues, so I went to the "Further reading for each chapter" section, and now have a nice pile of books to read on the subjects of Greek Sanctuaries (a truly fascinating topic, especially once you've visited Delphi).

I recomend this book for people who are intersted in the subject and want to have up-to-date information, but also as a well-written, never boring introduction to the wonders of Ancient Greece, a culture that, even if we don't know it, is part of ourselves and does not deserve the many clichés we have attached to it.....It needs to be better known....just as we need to know it better

Drawing the Line: The American Decision to Divide Germany, 1944-1949, by Carolyn Woods Eisenberg

In this fresh and challenging study of the origins of the Cold War, Professor Eisenberg traces the American role in dividing postwar Germany. Drawing upon original documentary sources, she explores how U.S. policy makers chose partition and mobilized reluctant West Europeans behind that approach. The book casts new light on the Berlin blockade, demonstrating that the United States rejected United Nations mediation and relied on its nuclear monopoly as the means of protecting its German agenda.

Review
"Drawing the Line is an eminently readable book and it will be a welcome addition to the treasure chest of reseachers, scholars and students of international affairs." Pam K. Datta, Perspectives

"It is an exceptionally well written and prodigiously researched work." Thomas Schwartz, The Journal of American History

"Carolyn Eisenberg shatters the central myth at the heart of the origins of the cold war: that the postwar division of Germany was Stalin's fault. She demonstrates unequivocally that the partition of Germany was `fundamentally an American decision,' strongly opposed by the Soviets. The implications are enormous." Kai Bird, The Nation

"...exhaustive and impressive..." David M. Keithly, Politik

"Carolyn Eisenberg's Drawing the Line is the most comprehensive study now available of U.S. policy towards Germany in the critical 1944-1949 period." Steven P. Remy, H-Net Reviews

"This is a thorough, beautifully written study; it is unlikely to be superseded." Loyd E. Lee, Political Science Quarterly

"This book is a remarkable achievement. Its mastery of the complex US politics and diplomacy of the division of Germany and the beginnings of the cold war is truly impressive." Diethelm Prowe, The International History Review

"...a daring, provocative and challenging book...a must read for anyone interested in post-World War II international history." Melvyn Leffler, University of Virginia

"...massively documented and unsparing argument that not Russian, but American non-cooperation prevented Germanu unification. Even those who will dissent from the tightly argued case will remain in Eisenberg's dept for a closely reasoned and provocative monograph that masters some of the most intricate disputes of early Cold War history. This work is a major achievement and major challenge." Charles Maier, Diplomatic History

"Just when some thought we were approaching a consensus on the reasons why Europe and the United States sunk into nearly a half-century of Cold War, Carolyn Eisenberg forces us to rethink what we thought we knew...Her vast research and grasp of detail make us reconsider the historic events that triggered the Cold War." Walter LaFeber, Cornell University

From the Back Cover
In this fresh and challenging study of the origins of the Cold War, Professor Eisenberg traces the American role in dividing postwar Germany. Drawing on many original documentary sources, she examines the Allied meeting on the Elbe, follows the Great Powers through their confrontation in Berlin, and ends with the creation of the West German state in the fall of 1949. Unlike many works in the field, this book argues that the partition of Germany was fundamentally an American decision. U.S. policy makers chose partition, mobilized reluctant West Europeans behind that approach, and, by excluding the Soviets from West Germany, contributed to the isolation of East Germany and the emergence of the post-World War II U.S.-Soviet rivalry. The volume casts new light on the Berlin blockade, demonstrating that the United States rejected United Nations mediation and relied on its nuclear monopoly as the means of protecting its German agenda.

Best Book about Post-WWII Decisions
By Armen Pandola
If you read this book, you will understand a great deal about how the world came to be what it is today. This fine book, based on meticulous research, sets forth the reasons why the US wanted to divide Germany following the defeat of the Nazis. It reveals the hidden agenga of the US in working against a unified Germany and explains how the US was at the very least compliscent in the creation of the "Iron Curtain." One of those truly important books that all should read who are interested in world affairs.

This is a book all Americans should read, but probably won't. Although stylistically undistinguished, it tells a vitally important story about the origins of the cold war. Few criticisms of the Soviet Union's diplomacy are more damning than the way it imposed dictatorship in Eastern Europe. What Eisenberg's book suggests however, is that the partition of Germany was not the result of Stalinist bullying, but American preference for it over a neutral social democratic state. Relying on more than 70 sets of private papers and files, Eisenberg shows how the United States subtly weakened denazification, decarterlization and the American committment to ensure the war-ravaged Soviet Union its share of German reparations. Gradually they decided that economic recovery and political security required an American allied Germany even if the Soviet quarter remained a Communist dictatorship. As Ambassador Walter Bedell Smith bluntly put it "The difficulty under which we labor is that in spite of our announced position, we really do not want nor intend to accept German unification in any terms that the Russians might agree to, even though they seemed to meet most of our requirements." With Truman having only a vague idea of the real issues, the United States ignored Soviet plans for reunification, forced plans for currency reform, and refused international proposals for mediation of the Berlin Blockade crisis. The consequences of this decision were incalcuably tragic for Central Europe and the world.

Don't you just love -

- how some reviewers demand "let's get the facts straight," and then reiterate the tired propaganda of General George Patton? This is the rhetoric of faith, to keep the smug warm and fuzzy inside, but not of historic inquiry. In the latter, Carolyn Eisenberg has done a splendid job of separating fact from faith and outright fantasy.

When Yugoslav Communist Milovan Djilas went to Moscow during the war, he was (allegedly) told by Stalin: "This war is not like wars of the past. Today the victors must impose their social systems as far as their armies can reach." But what to do when the armies stop in the middle of a conquered nation? That's when diplomacy's deceitful dance begins its piroutte across the pages. Both sides will demand political and economic unity, but on their own mutually exclusive terms; and must finally retreat behind their own barricades rather than lose the ground taken by force.

The Soviet strategy was indeed masterful, as Ms. Eisenberg shows. By simply demanding fulfillment of wartime promises - reparations, the anti-fascist purging of the German government, and equality in central administration - the Soviets would thwart US plans to use German industry for West European recovery through the Marshall Plan. The foundations of the Berlin Wall were thus laid, not in 1961, but 1947. As US ambassador Walter Bedell Smith plainly stated (p. 359): "The difficulty under which we labor is that in spite of our announced position, we really do not want nor intend to accept German unification in any terms that the Russians might agree to, even though they seemed to meet most of our requirements," thus requiring "careful maneuvering to avoid the appearance of inconsistency and hypocrisy." Indeed, the American strategy smacks of good old down-home Jim Crow-style segregation. This, as much as the Soviet "iron curtain," turned East Germany into a "red ghetto."

Only a social democratic Germany could have achieved postwar unity, but this was not permissable to those in power. When German Communist viceroy Walter Ulbricht said, "Everything must look democratic, but we must be in control," he spoke also for his West German adversaries. The real line through Germany lay in the minds of its occupiers: to restore the prewar status quo, via the German productive capacity of the Ruhr; or to remake the social, economic and political landscape that had caused the war. On this division was the line drawn, and of necessity all compromises had to be crushed, in Germany and throughout Europe. In retrospect, this might have been for the best: the contentions in a unified Germany could have led to a civil war, as in 1919. And with the occupying powers lined up behind the contenders, escalated into something far worse than a "divided sky" for Germany and Europe.

Though the cold war is over and the West allegedly "triumphed," the repercussions of this partition yet linger in the current economic blind alley of modern Europe.

Genetics and Criminal Behavior (Cambridge Studies in Philosophy and Public Policy)From Brand: Cambridge University Press

This volume brings together a group of essays by leading philosophers of science, ethicists, and legal scholars, commissioned for an important and controversial conference on genetics and crime. The essays address basic conceptual, methodological, and ethical issues raised by genetic research on criminal behavior but largely ignored in the public debate. They explore the complexities in tracing any genetic influence on criminal, violent, or antisocial behavior, the varieties of interpretation to which evidence of such influences is subject, and the relevance of such influences to the moral and legal appraisal of criminal conduct. The volume provides a critical overview of the assumptions, methods, and findings of recent behavioral genetics.

Nature and Power: A Global History of the Environment (Publications of the German Historical Institute), by Joachim Radkau

Nature and Power traces the expanding scope of environmental action over the course of history: from initiatives undertaken by individual villages and cities, environmental policy has become a global concern. Efforts to steer human use of nature and natural resources have become complicated, as Nature and Power shows, by particularities of culture and by the vagaries of human nature itself. Environmental history, the author argues, is ultimately the history of human hopes and fears.

Review
"Joachim Radkau's Nature and Power offers the best overview of world environmental history available in the English language. Radkau has an independent cast of mind and an uncanny ability to focus on the 'hot' topics in the global environmental field. His perspective is always fresh and insightful, even when he is taking the reader down well-trodden paths."
- Mark Cioc, University of California, Santa Cruz

"Americans may have invented the field of environmental history, but today some of the most ambitious work is coming from outside the country, offering provocative new approaches and perspectives. Joachim Radkau joins that international band of innovative historians with this extraordinary work of global synthesis. It is bold, opinionated, and important."
- Donald Worster, University of Kansas

"...an indispensable addition to library collections on environmental history. Essential." -Choice

"A review like this cannot do justice to the richness of Radkau's account of world environmental history. And it is perhaps the richness, the diversity, and the complexity of this account that will be this book's most important legacy to world environmental history." - David Christian

"Radkau has crafted a book of extraordinary scope by building on regional environmental histories as well as earlier world histories...Thomas Dunlap translated Nature and Power for this English edition, and his translation is virtually flawless, providing exquisite prose that never reveals that the ideas originated in a different language."
World History Bulletin, Kim Little, University of Central Arkansas

Prizewinning historical review of global environmental history - and indirect insights on Amazon reader interests.
By Frank T. Manheim
This volume, recipient of the World History Association book prize for 2009, is an English translation of "Mensch und Natur in die Geschichte", published in Leipzig in 2002. The author, Joachim Radkau, is a German historian who doesn't do small stuff - subjects with less than historical and holistic comprehensiveness. A selection of his previous books include "German Industry and Politics from Bismarck to Today" (1974); "Wood - a Natural Raw Material" (1989), and "Nature and Power: A Global History of the Environment" (2000).

I'm a policy researcher trying to make sense of U.S. environmental and regulatory policy. Radkau's book and insights amply repay study for its relevance to international perspectives on today's environmental issues. It could be useful to academic and policy researchers, advanced students, environmentalists, industry leaders, politicians and policymakers, as well as historians. Yet, there was not a single prior review of Radkau's book prior to my effort. In contrast, Thomas Friedman's "The Earth is Flat" has 1079 Amazon reviews. Friedman, a well-known columnist for the NY Times, is a knowledgeable and skilled writer. But is his book 1000 times more useful or insightful than Radkau's book? Friedman offers new observations and ideas about the issues of the moment - that tend to be dated by the time a new book arrives.

This contrast in Amazon reader interests brings to my mind a somewhat parallel assessment by a highly-regarded observer about America, Alexis De Tocqueville. In his famous book, "Democracy in America" (1835), the young French nobleman reported often-quoted flattering examples of "American Exceptionalism", i.e., national characteristics not found in the countries from which immigrants to America originally came. But he also identified "negative exceptionalisms". He apologized for talking about flaws in American culture, but explained that he thought Americans needed to know about them.

One of De T.'s first observations after getting off the boat from France was the poor quality of American politicians - compared to the positive values he found in citizens. But he later described in detail the reason - the tendency of American voters to avoid leaders with vision and sound judgment. They preferred politicians who served their local needs, told them what they wanted to hear, and were colorful and charismatic. Ring any bells for today? He also reported that Americans tended to be superficial and "now" oriented in their preoccupations, paying little attention to authority or wisdom from the past. Saving grace: in times of crisis, Americans did accept statesmen.

But let's get back to Radkau. He has an astounding command of detail about obscure past history but places both it and modern developments in interesting perspective, and generally avoids putting on nationalistic blinders. For example, Radkau reveals not only American ignorance of European and other environmental history, but also European scientists' ignorance of American environmental pioneers and history. To a German scientist who asked "who is Rachel Carson", Radkau replied that Carson was to the American environmental movement as Joan of Arc was to French nationalism. Radkau went on to note that "the 1980 Global 2000 report to the American President, translated into a 1,508 page affordable German edition, became a bestseller and the Bible of the German environmental movement."

Radkau points out that leading American textbooks of environmental history like those of Caroline Merchant (in the 1990s) had no entry on the Chernobyl nuclear accident. In contrast, this "catastrophic accident at the Soviet nuclear power plant in April 1986" was for a time regarded in parts of Europe as the most important event in environmental history of modern time. Among other things, it led to Sweden's decision to phase out its nuclear power facilities (a decision recently rescinded). Radkau offers plenty of evidence about "how little the environmental movements of various countries know about each other, even when thinking 'globally'".

In his introduction to the English edition Radkau points to the important influence of Britain's vast colonial empire and the early American perception of unlimited land and personal potentials on British and American attitudes. The American "everything is possible" attitude and tendency to go to extremes contrasts with attitudes in continental Europe. Awareness of "limits to growth" was long present in Germany. Forest administrations "elevated sustainability into a doctrine in the 18th Century".

Recent American environmentalists from John Muir and Aldo Leopold to the present have come down hard on deer, sheep (John Muir called them a "hoofed locust") and goats, whose omniverous browsing prevents replenishment of forests. But Radkau notes the value of sheep and goats to many cultures and points out the 3000 year history of the Luneburg heath in criticizing the idea that only trees, forests, and their ecosystems and animal populations have value.

There are few nations, cultures, or ecological phenomena that Radkau does not seem to have included in his research, whether Mongolia, Bhutan, Canada, Malaria, irrigation, mining, forest clearing, the cult of dung, the "holy" nature movement, industral environmental crisis, problems associated with tourism, and space flight. He places an especial emphasis on nuclear energy but goes remarkably light on global climate change- the biggest gap in his book. He could make a great contribution if he brought his background and omnidirectional approach to a future volume on this subject.

Often too theoretical, this book nonetheless is an impressive work of environmental history
By Nathan B
"Nature and Power" is not for the faint of heart, it is very dense, both in terms of the amount of text per page and in its conceptualizations. Throughout the text Radkau spends significant amounts of time discussing the historiography of environmental history and the intellectual history of environmentalism. The first chapter in particular says virtually nothing of substance (e.g. changing water levels in Denmark or rate of deforestation), but rather deals entirely with how we think about environmentalism. While I found it mind numbing, someone else might really appreciate it. But there is plenty of substance to be had.

One problem Radkau faces is that he tends to avoid the apocalyptic predictions of environmentalists, instead offering a balanced, nuanced view that can easily be lost in translation (so to speak, this is after all a literal translation as well, and a good one at that) -- but his environmentalist peers do not appreciate this nuance, and the anti-environmentalists are too prone to claim his as their own. Towards the end of the book Radkau tells about how a radio show used his book to claim that there are no environmental problems to be overly worried about. This clearly is not the case. Radkau simply points out that struggles with sustainability are not new, and that apocalyptic predictions tend to fall short (thankfully). As problems become manifest, human attention is diverted to them. It is environmental problems that are masked that cause the most trouble.

Humanity appears to have begun its history with wasteful use of resources. Slash and burn agriculture, where forests are burned down, and the ash used as a short term fertilizer, was the norm for many years. When humans were few and land was plenty that was generally fine. When Americans first came to America, and through the 19th century, land was so plentiful that it was often cheaper to use the land and then move on rather than fertilize and replenish it. Mining, fishing, and other activities have all variously caused ecological pressure. This is a recurring theme: while we view conservation as a contemporary issue, it is not.

Which raises the issue: what to conserve? Radkau raises some thorny issues. Why is it that larger, cuter animals like seals or elephants are more popular than salmon or insects. And why is it that goats should be valued over the forests that they can overgraze if not watched? Why is one life more valuable than another? And in helping one, ecological damage can occur elsewhere. Radkau notes that planting trees is a popular "green" thing to do. But the importation of the Australian Eucalyptis to Portugal has exasperated water shortages due to its high water use. Dams avoided the use of fossil fuels, but damaged fish stocks and killed rivers. Wind farms kill birds, pitting bird conservationists against alternative fuel proponents. As Radkau notes, environmental movements have expended a great deal of energy in internal controversies, but it is not hard to see why.

While environmentalists often tote the "natural," what is natural also seems a relevant question to Radkau. One of the sections of his books deals with husbandry and gardening - both largely ignored in environmental history. According to Radkau, domestication was one of the great acts of conservation. Instead of hunting and depleting stocks, domestication allowed for sustainable protein. But a lamb is no less alive than a faun. Gardens, too, represent a conservation of a kind - and are at least worth conserving. Radkau does not address this, but man-made lakes such as the Salton Sea at the end of the Colorado River are now the locus of conservation efforts - created during the New Deal when they diverted the Colorado River for a time to do hydraulic work on the river, it is now an important stopping spot for migratory fowl. But it is man-made. Does the fact that man made it rather than a beaver make it less natural? Nature adapts and changes itself as well.

Who is best to do the conserving? Some argue for the state. The Soviet State, with all its power, drained the Aral sea and caused massive desertification in central Asia. By contrast, the United States federal government, beginning with the Republican Theodore Roosevelt, initiated massive land conservation. But FDR radically altered the landscape through the Tennessee River Valley authority (which did have many beneficial effects, and pulled the south from poverty), and under the new deal dams were put up all over the country at an alarming rate. Many rivers were forever changed.

Small holders, too, have a mixed record. In Germany (Radkau's homeland), forests were best preserved when they were utilized for grazing acorns (from Oak). Across Europe this was the case - the peasants depended on the forests, so they preserved them, and pruned out coniferous trees in favor of deciduous trees. In the Aegean island of Greece, the forests that survived best were the ones that were needed for their ships: fine wood of the right size and shape were essential. Usage creates the need to preserve.

Organizations do not solve problems, people do. Organizations that are full of people who don't care about the environment, or have different goals, will have different outcomes from organizations full of people that do care. The type of organization appears to matter quite a bit less. Radkau does point out, though, that heavy handed intervention that alienates locals will generally fail. As he notes several times, an old German saying says "you can't have a policeman by every tree." In some cases governments have antagonized locals, and made locals hate the environmental movement by removing traditional rights, that as noted above actually go a long ways towards conservation. Radkau points out that rich western environmentalists advocate against tropical rainforest clearing, but don't say anything when temperate forests are cut down for development. Radkau advocates for simple rules and against excessive regulatory regimes for maximum effect.

Overall this is an impressive work, but I kept wishing for more detail, more nuts and bolts so to speak, and a lot less theorizing and conceptualizing. The same amount of time spent elsewhere would yield more useful information about the natural world. At the same time, this is an impressively broad work;Radkau seems eminently reasonable, and he raises fascinating questions. 3.5 stars.

If you read one work on environmental issues, I strongly recommend Something New Under the Sun: An Environmental History of the Twentieth-Century World (Global Century Series) as you will learn a lot more, with more enjoyment and in less time. If you want to learn about water issues, I recommend the extremely readable book Unquenchable: America's Water Crisis and What To Do About It. Still, this book is worth a read if you will read several books on the subject.

Econometric Foundations Pack with CD-ROM, by Ron C. Mittelhammer, George G. Judge, Douglas J. Miller

Econometric Foundations establishes a new paradigm for teaching econometric problems to talented upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals. The complete package (text, accompanying CD-ROM, and electronic guide) provides relevance, clarity, and organization to those wishing to acquaint themselves with the principles and procedures for information processing and recovery from samples of economic data. In the real world such data are usually limited or incomplete, and the parameters sought are unobserved and not subject to direct observation or measurement. Econometric Foundations fully provides an operational understanding of a rich set of estimation and inference tools to master such data, including traditional likelihood based and non-traditional non-likelihood based procedures, that can be used in conjunction with the computer to address economic problems. The accompanying CD-ROM contains reviews of probability theory, principles of classical estimation and inference, and handling of ill-posed inverse problems in text-searchable electronic documents, an interactive Matrix Review manual with GAUSS LIGHT software, and an electronic Examples Manual. A separate Guide, which may be accessed through the Internet, further enhances the student's mastery of the topics by providing solutions guides to the questions and problems in the text. This text, CD-ROM, and electronic guide package make Econometric Foundations the most up-to-date and comprehensive learning resource available.

Review
"This is an excellent graduate-level text on the foundations of econometric estimation and inference...Most importantly, the authors...devote significant effort to explaining what econometric science is all about...This is an excellent econometric text. It provedes the necessary econometric tools and answers, while outlining the difficulties in data analyses. It not only provides the reader with most recent econometric and statistic methods, it also provides a unified approach to econometrics, thereby making it easier for students to comprehend, apply, and practice...Given its low price, it is definitely a bargain and should be on the desk of every graduate student and practitioner." JASA

"The book has an innovative approach to integrating electronic resources and software applications into its presentation....the authors are not shy of including the software code directly into the body of the text where they wish to emphasize the ease of applicability of the procedures discussed.Econometric Foundations has a bold, novel perspective that is often rewarding." Ian Preston, Times Higher Education Supplement Internet Service

"The authors of Econometric Foundations are to be congratulated for their comprehensive and clear presentation of old and new econometric methods along with many interesting and relevant applications. This fine blend of theory and application makes this text particularly useful and appealing." Arnold Zellner, University of Chicago

"This graduate text breaks new ground in both content and delivery. Not only is much of the content on the frontier, but also Bayesian and classical approaches are simultaneously developed in a creative manner." N. Eugene Savin, University of Iowa

"To a degree not previously accomplished in a textbook, this masterful volume unifies econometric theory and modern approaches to its application. Spanning state-of-the-art advances in sampling theoretic and Bayesian inference, the book also integrates concepts from systems theory by emphasizing the logic of the inverse problem." William A. Barnett, Washington University in St. Louis

"The book by Mittelhammer, Judge and Miller provides a sound introduction to classical econometric models and methods and in addition it covers a range of special topics such as semiparametric and nonparametric regression, maximum entropy and moment-based estimation techniques. Moreover, it offers a strong treatment of Bayesian methods. It emphasizes methods for data without time series characteristics and will be a strong competitor in the relevant section of the market for econometrics textbooks." Helmut LÜtkepohl, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Good software bundle
By A Customer
The book itself and the software programs themselves are "independently" valuable. Especially, GAUSS instruction programs are well organized, but the system itself is a little bit old(GAUSS 3.2 Light for WIN 95/NT) and Aptech version-up offer has already expired you might take into your account. There are huge amount of descriptions about GAUSS program not in book but in CD software, from Ruud Koning's GAUSS instruction to searchable GAUSS maling list archive(1995-1999) and very useful matrix review manual. But you may have to consider that the content of book itself does not describe any GAUSS but adds computer problem sets as bonus and that whole GAUSS computer problem requires original "ef" library inside CD and does not support higher edition of GAUSS(You should run inside GAUSS 3.2). The book is for advanced readers only(after reading Greene) and is not a classical econometric book which covers time series. So, this is best for those who are in in the field of Bayesian, nonparametric, or a little bit skewed to theory of that kind, but not good for those who are in the field of "classical" econometrics, time series and financial related. No time series stuff described at all.

Software compatibility issue
By A Customer
If you read 'readme.txt' carefully, you'll find instructions on how to run examples under full GAUSS version. I use GAUSS 5.0 to run the examples, and no problems at all. To me, it's a good place to learn GAUSS programming.

A theoretical book for advanced econometricians
By C. Vladimir Rodríguez Caballero
This book is not really easy, I have to recommend this book only for advanced students and researcher. I think a student will understand and will enjoy with this book only if he has an advanced knowledge in statistical inference and probability theory. Particularly, the chapters corresponding to nonparametric, robust and Bayesian sections are written carefully taking in mind that this book will help us to begin to study in other kind of books specialized in each topic.
