Dr. Derbes has a rare gift of insight into this troubled time period, and her flowing, warm writing style makes the images and ideas equally accessible to her readers. A wonderful book for anyone interested in Medieval times or iconography.

A great book on an important (for academics) subject

Derbes has shown how it was that the artistic revolution of Giotto's time was built on Byzantine foundations revivified by the Franciscans (the standard rap is that Giotto turned away from the Byzantine and, once again, "looked at nature.") For those interested in the "transition" from "medieval" to "renaissance," this is a very important piece of writing and thinking.

The Best Overview of Romano-Persian Relations

I know of no other book that covers this topic in such an accessible format. Books on the Sassanid Persians are hard to find in general, and the Roman-Persian wars generally only show up in the context of background information or specific emperors' campaigns. It's kind of embarrassing. This book covers more than just the wars though. It includes the diplomatic relationships and the way that their relations changed over time. This book covers all the basics needed for a broader understanding of this topic.

It's nice when books are so considerately laid out. The first section covers a narrative of the conflicts while the other chapters deal with the various issues involved. The second section details what the sources say. It includes large selections from these sources to describe the various conflicts. As might be expected most of these documents are Roman ones. Syrian and Armenians ones show up too, but the Persian evidence is scanty and rarely informative. The rest of the book covers topics such as diplomacy, the Arabs, and the nature of rule.

I don't have much to say about this book. That's not because it's a bad one but because it's a good one. I have no major criticisms and while I disagree with several of their interpretations I can't say that they are too far off. As I said earlier there really aren't many books on this topic. Touraj Daryaee's Sasanian Persia: The Rise and Fall of an Empire and Sasanian Iran: Portrait of a Late Antique Empire are the only books in English covering the Sassanians exclusively. 'L'Iran sous les Sassanides' by Christensen, and 'Grundzüge der Geschichte des sasanidischen Reiches' by Schippmann are the only sources dealing with them in any language that I know of. Two volumes of the Cambridge History of Iran (Part 1, Part 2) deal with the Seleucids through the Sassanids and contain much useful information. Vital collections of primary sources are contained in The Roman Eastern Frontier and the Persian Wars Part I (AD 226-363) and Part II (AD 363-630). Apart from this most of the works dealing with the Sassanians only deal with them in the context of general Iranian history. Obviously there are a great deal more books on the Romans.

Good Summary

Rome and Persia in Late Antiquity provides a brief summary of events in chronological order supported by quotation and references. Supplementing this are additional chapters that focus on particular aspects of the two empires. These include the military, the diplomatic and the religious.

Most of the content will be entirely familiar to readers with an interest in the period, and for English-speaking readers, many of the referenced works are in German, which makes checking footnotes and references difficult for the monolingual.

This volume is a good companion to the period, occupying a middle ground between the more detailed source books such as Dodgeon & Lieu's 'The Roman Eastern Frontier and the Persian Wars: A Documentary History' and a more generalist historical summary. One or two points did grate, for example the use of Wilcox's Osprey book as a source for the Sasanian army, and an acceptance of claims of multiple captures of Ctesiphon in the 3rd Century that have never been substantiated. The authors seem to have a very good grasp of the source material available, covering Syriac and Armenian accounts, together with the later Arab authors such as Masudi and Baladhur as well as the more widely known Western sources such as Ammianus, Procopius and the like.

I would have liked to see more critical analysis of some of the Romano-Byzantine sources, but on the whole I can recommend this book as an excellent summary for the more than casual reader.

Rome and the Sasanian Empire

This book covers the history of the Roman - Sasanian Persian relationship, from the coming to power of Ardashir I in 224 up to the defeat of Xusro II by Heraclius in 628 and the subsequent downfall of the Persian Empire. Thereby, different aspects are treated such as warfare and peace negotiations between the two powers, the struggles for the different peripheral areas, as well as religious and economic aspects. A positive point is also that the authors cite many original sources, thereby enabling the reader not only to gain an insight into what happened, but also how it was perceived and written down by contemporaries.

Rating it nevertheless turned out to be a difficult task for me. One the one hand, the book contained a lot of interesting information and I learned a lot about Roman - Sasanian relations while reading it. On the other hand, I simply couldn't warm up for its structure. Maybe that's simply because I prefer history books organized in a chronological order. This one, however, after a short introduction into the events of 224 to 628, was build up according to the themes, where each theme, such as wars, peace treaties, conquest of peripheral dominions, economic and religious interactions, and so on, was discussed separately, and only in itself chronologically. We learn thus about the wars from 224 to 628, about the peace negotiations from 224 to 628, and so on, never being told the whole story, and always browsing back and forward through the pages to be reminded of what happened at the same time. Moreover as peace treaties generally involved wars, and as wars were also fought in the peripheral areas, and as economic and religious considerations were always crucial elements in the wars, a lot of information was bound to be repeated throughout the pages.

Thus, even though the book conveyed many fascinating insights into Roman - Sasanian relations, it proved a difficult read. I take it that it is due to the idea to cite original source material that this structure was chosen, so that different sources with similar contents would be put together in one theme. Nevertheless, even though I really liked the idea to put original source material into the text, I still think that the book would have been better written in a chronological order. But maybe that's just my point of view. Thus, for its contents, I would have given the book five stars, but its structure deserves three stars at most. Therefore, I give the average of four stars.

Very good reference book for any astrophotographer

Micheal Covington's book covers all aspects of astrophotography starting from objects, from camera selection to films, exposure methods, mounts and drives, guiding of the mount & guiding accuracy/errors, and of course the CCD imaging. I also gives ideas on how to build a simple barn door mount. It does not end at taking exposures. After an exposure is taken we have to convert it into an acceptable quality print or into a computer file. Images can be greatly improved by digital processing. So it also covers image processing ideas. The only point to be noted is that one must look at his website and download the errata. The book has many printing errors, some of which are trivial though. That, of course, must not deter any user. I consider is my best field guide book on this topic. I believe his recent edition has got over these errors - not mine. I bought mine in 1999.

An excellent resource for both novices and pros

Although photography has been a hobby of mine for years, I recently became interested in astronomy. I bought this book to learn how to combine these two hobbies.
This is an excellent resource. If you're just starting out, this book covers the basics and explains things that even a novice like me can understand. As your skill level advances this book will continue to be an excellent resource. It is filled with detailed technical information on scopes, mounts, lenses, films, techniques and just about anything you need to know on this subject. I agree with other reviewers that the book does not cover CCD photography in depth. CCD hardware/software seems to be changing at such a rapid pace. It would be difficult to write a detailed text on this subject that would not be out of date in a couple of years.
Overall, I rate this book very highly and recommend if for both novices and pros.

I hesitated to pick up a copy of this book...

I've been trying my hand off and on for the last year at astrophotography with my Meade LX-200. In that time I've scoured the internet, devoured newsgroup, and emailed enough astrophotographers that you'd think I was trying to get elected to NASA or something. In all that time, one name and reference guide kept coming up as a "must have". Astrophotography for the Amateur by Michael A. Covington.

Everywhere I turned, everyone I asked, their answers always seemed to come down to "...because Michael Covington does it this way" or "Yeah I tried doing it that way but after reading Astrophotography I tried it this way and received better results". That attitude actually "put me off" this book. Here I wanted to learn how to do astrophotography, not follow some recipe in a book. After finally browsing through a friends copy I was immediately impressed with the book as a reference guide, and when comparing it to my own notes and conclusions found several area's where I had erred, resulting in poor photo's. Of course, the flip side is true as well.

Some of the info in this book (even though it is a second edition) is dated such as film types and recommendations. I've found his exposure calculations for Lunar photography to be way over exposed.

I have to make a correction here, originaly I (and others) noted the lack of CCD imaging information in the book and I need to note that the first addition makes no mention of CCD, while the second edition has a section detailing the diffrences between CCD and film work. It also has a brief section devoted to CCD work. Its not as indepth as his discussions on film work.

It has been over a decade since the publication of Andrew Robinson's Satyajit Ray: The Inner Eye (1989) and Ben Nyce's Satyajit Ray: A Study of His Films (1988). This new monograph aims to approach the cinema of Ray from an Indian aesthetic as well as an Indian social and historical perspective. Cooper (literature and film, San Diego Mesa Coll.) adds much to our understanding, analyzing Ray's early films in terms of the concept of "rasa" (i.e., aesthetic perception) in terms of the status of Indian women, and vis-?-vis British and Hindu hegemony--among other things.
