RST is a very involved theory and I have only just started the book but it looks good so far. Book itself is in very good second hand condition so I am pleased :)

FANTASTIC book

This is a great book for anyone interested in personality psychology. It is my opinion that RST provides the best paradigm to investigate personality as it is grounded in neuroscience rather than the "lexical tradition" (although there is overlap, as both approaches are useful).

This book was an easy read to me, but I also am quite familiar with personality psychology and behavioral neuroscience, so others not as familiar with issues in the field might want to read Marvin Zuckerman's Psychobiology of Personality (2nd edition) for a good overview of the field. I'd also recommend Hans Eysenck's The Biological Basis of Personality for a look back at the founding of the Eysenckian tradition, of which RST began as an offshoot turned competitor.

Big help

I've cited this book in my own research more than any other. I'm so happy I bought it. I don't give it 5 stars because many of the chapters are quite boring to read (5 stars is the perfect book). But who care too much about this in light of how useful the material is. Anyone who employs RST in their research should buy this book.

About the Author
Arthur Holmberg is Associate Professor of Dramatic Literature, Theatre History, and Performance Theory at Brandeis University, and is the Literary Director of the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard. He was the US editor for The World Encyclopedia of Contemporary Theatre, and he has also edited The Lively ART: Reflections on Twenty Years of the American Repertory Theatre. He is the author of The Theatre of Robert Wilson. His articles on theatre, film and music have appeared in many publications including the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, The Washington Post and Modern Drama. Holmberg served as resident dramaturg at the ART, where he worked with artists including Robert Wilson, Philip Glass and David Mamet.

Thorough and multifaceted coverage of a fascinating topic

Arom's treatment of African music is fantastic. The reader will benefit from Arom's direct experiences with African music in many ways. Not only does he provide musical transcriptions, but also discusses the equipment and techniques used for recording. He also discusses the social aspects of the music, which are inseparable from it. There is a large section in which he shares the results of his musical analysis--specifically, the ways in which he categorizes African music based on their rhythmic activity. He creates his own analytical methdologies and creates very specific terminology to describe the rhythmic structures found in African music. As a graduate student in music theory I found this book very helpful in my research and analysis of composers who try to emulate the rhythmic structures and phenomena found in African music. It's a terrific resource.

I spent about a year-and-a-half working through 'African Polyphony and Polyrhythm' (by Simha Arom), practicing and recording the musical examples myself. There might be some confusion as to why the original recordings were not included with the book, the reason being, that the original multitrack tapes required expert interpretation (involving interaction with the Aka people themselves) to form the necessary sets and models from parts analysed individually and then in combination. This involved 'parsing' the recorded material, rather than simply reproducing it in score. However, there was a CD-ROM published in French as "Pygmées Aka, Peuple et Musique", which contained audio examples and even an interactive sequencer allowing the user to recombine recorded fragments to form various versions of selected Aka formulae. I managed to acquire a copy with great difficulty, as this is no longer on sale due to the (now) almost obsolete format. Although it is interesting to hear the isolated parts performed by the Aka themselves, it is important to remember that even the Aka do not hear their own parts in isolation but only as part of an interwoven polyphony. One obvious criticism is the (seemingly inexplicable) absence of any in-depth discussion on vocal music, although it is explained how songs rather ingeniously form the melodic basis of horn hocket models.

ERRATA: I have found a few errors in the English translation of book VI. Those that might cause a few problems arise in the chapter `Strict Polyrhythmics'. (#1} At the top of page 248 (i.e. `the principle of inserting binary quantities into configurations bound by ternary quantities') there are, strictly speaking, three possible ways to correct the paradigmatic representation. Either the `24 minimal values' should read: `20 minimal values', or the corresponding values should read: |3.|2.2.2.2 |3.|2.2.2.2.2 to account for 24 minimal values. Alternatively, a fifth row could be inserted to include both 20 and 24 minimal values. However, since the former (20) does not apply to Central African rhythmics, I suggest it should be corrected to account for 24 minimal values. (#2} From page 272, the part of the gàsà drum for the Yasmàlé dance is (probably) inventoried in ex.82 not ex.80, so the inventory for the agoa dance is likely to be ex.80 (and certainly not ex.81 as stated, which shows `all the realisations in the first pulse of the initial figure' extracted from both the Yamàlé and agoa dances). The reason I make this assumption is that the gàsà drum variations for the agoa dance are inventoried again on page 641, this time corresponding to ex.80 not ex.82, which is less likely to be in error. (#3) On Page 284, ex.98, the first kpòlò part should have dotted quavers and not dotted crotchets. (#4} On Page 297, ex.120, the clap at position 21 should be at position 22 to reflect the isochronous handclaps in the (middle) part. (Incidentally, the polyrhythmic substructure of this rite is said to have 'hemiola-like' interweaving, when in fact there is literally a hemiola relationship between the accents of mo.kongo and the durations of the iron stips part at the beginning of each 'hemistich'.) (#5} On page 305, ex.129, the ngué part of the mò.kóndi model is incorrect. The attacks should occur at positions 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 16, 17, 20, 21, and 22. (#6} In `The association of Polyphony and Polyrhythmics' chapter on page 636, the box representing the period of the `song and harp' in the diagram of fig.7 is too short, and should be extended to correspond to two periods of the `Double bell 2' and four periods of `Double bell 1', since it stands at a ratio of 2:1 and 4:1 with these parts respectively.

Brian Hamnett is a Research Professor in History at the University of Essex. He has researched and travelled widely in the Iberian peninsula and Latin America, and written extensively on Mexico. His recent publications deal with the late Spanish colonial period, the struggles for independence, and nineteenth-century Mexican history.

Not concise enough history

This book is one of those histories that expect you to know a lot of history already. I was very disappointed. I wanted a concise, clear account of Mexico's history. This reads likes someone's thesis. I slogged through to 1900, then skimmed the rest. As a basic history, this is a flop.

Confusing

The book does not serve its purpose as a general introduction to Mexican history because the author does not present a narrative history in any sense. Rather, the book contains a very high-level and abstract analysis of major economic and social forces surrounding the historical events, the basic outline of which the reader needs to know in advance. Perhaps the book would do better finding "some resonance among fellow disciplinarians" (from the Preface, p. xii) than appealing to the general (educated) reader.

Not very clear ...

This book was very hard to read. It jumps from one event to another without respecting the dates. It was very difficult for me to follow the developement of the different events since it doesn't respect a timeline. The different regimes of the varying political leaders (from emperors and dictators to presidents) are not described in a clear/easy way. In my opinion, the author dedicates very little time to describe very important events such as the independence or the revolution. At the end, I just got a general idea of the history of Mexico but not a very clear one. I wouldn't recomend this book to any person interested in the history of Mexico. I gave it two stars only because I think the pictures in the book are quite good and relevant to the description of events.

Excellent synthesis of the importance and functions of fats

This is a good, solid synthesis of what we know (or rather, what we should know) about patterns of lipid acquisition, storage and utilization by plants and animals. The author uses lots of examples of lipid adaptations in wild animals, and covers everything from seasonal changes in the adipose tissue of reindeer, to the fatty acid composition of crayfish eye cell membranes. Brief, concise reviews of lipid synthesis, transport and oxidation are given, as well as a discussion of the diversity of fatty acids and their various origins, properties, and functions. A good portion of the text is devoted to understanding why lipids are so important, and how they function as storage molecules, membrane constituents, and cellular messengers. These functions are illustrated with examples of the roles of lipids in migration, hibernation, starvation, reproduction, the immune system, and human obesity. Of particular interest is the way in which the reader is encouraged to consider fats as very important, critical biological molecules, whose reputation has been unfairly maligned by the general public (and many scientists) for hundreds of years. This book is a critical new addition to any lipid/biochemical library; it is informative, current, interesting, and well-written. It is of utmost usefulness to any biologist studying lipid metabolism, and should certainly be read by anyone who has not yet realized that lipids are fascinating and important molecules whose appreciation is long overdue.

The Fats of Life

This is a terrific book -- I'm currently ordering my *third* copy of it as I keep giving copies away! It's not only interesting scientifically, but is an excellent piece of science writing, on a par with books such as Diamond's "Guns, Germs and Steel": information clearly presented in the context of a narrative that makes for unputdownable reading. (I read this book from cover to cover in a couple of sittings, whereas I usually browse most science books.) One of the most interesting aspects of the book (to me) is the discussion on the reasons for human obesity, and the fact that the accumulation, metabolism and distribution of fat in humans (even "thin" ones) is vastly different from that in other mammals. I would recommend anyone who believes models of fat metabolism based on rodent models to take note of this book. Additionally, Pond is able to speculate on evolutionary biological issues in humans in a logical and rational fashion, without falling into the excesses of evolutionary psychology.Pond also points out how much our "fat phobic" society has limited scientific investigation into both physiological properties and gross anatomical details of adipose tissue (no, it's not just a big inert blob!)

All about fat storage, transport and digestion

The Fats of Life is mostly about storage fats, fats as an energy source, fats as adipose tissue. It's not about structural fats. So it doesn't have much to say about fats as components of cell membranes in, say, the eyes or brain. Nor is it about fats as the source of building materials for such vital messenger molecules as prostaglandins, leukotrienes and thromboxanes.
It's mostly about such things as fat storage depots, the special locations where fats are stored. It tells a great deal about fat storage depots in animals as varied as hares, humans, bears, seals, camels, horses, lions, stoats, birds and squirrels. It also tells a great deal about fats as the energy source during hibernation, migration or other times when food supplies are chancy. And it discusses digesting, transporting and using fats as an energy source, as insulation and as protection for vital organs, from an evolutionary viewpoint
The book is meant for a lay audience, not scientists, so it lacks references. Sometimes this causes problems. For example, the book says that eating sugar is not an important source of weight gain in humans. But there is no reference to support this claim. There are chapter notes at the end of the book. Otherwise, there is no bibliography. There are eighteen black-and-white illustrations.

SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES IN ECONOMICS THAT LED TO NOBEL PRIZE

Kahneman and Tversky's compilation of articles in this book is an outstanding exposition of recent advances in cognitive psychology, especially advances associated with prospect theory. The work presented in this volume is largely responsible for the authors being awarded the Nobel Prize (Tversky died before receiving it).
The text is somewhat dense at parts, being aimed at economists and psychologists with some mathematical familiarity. However, the portions of the book that require much mathematics can safely be bypassed without losing much of the substance of the text. This text is the most credible presentation of an alternative theory to the rational actor theory usually assumed in economics. For example, some of the articles help explain the magnitude of the equity return premium, or help show how people make choices differently in similar situations based simply on the way the situation is presented.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in decision making theory, especially as it relates to consumer behavior. It is a brilliant volume that includes the most important articles by the leading mind in the field.

The Cutting Edge of Behavioral Decision Theory

Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky have spent their whole lives developing an alternative to the "rational actor" model of human decision-making, the standard of traditional economic theory and the decision sciences. Their ideas were received rather well from the start, but in recent years, their alternative, which we can fairly call "behavioral economics" has virtually displaced traditional decision theory as an active research area.
People often think of the Kahneman-Tversky behaviorists as "bomb-throwers" in the sense that they appear to love to destroy traditional concepts of rationality rather that put constructive models in their place. This collection, which consists of 42 very high quality essays by the leading lights of the field, shows clearly that this is not the case. Prospect theory, loss aversion, framing effets, status quo effect, and the like are carefully modeled in this book. I came away quite impressed.
It is a shame that Amos Tversky never lived to see the light of day of this fine volume. It is certainly a vigorous vindication of his lifetime research agenda.

Risk decisions finally explained

I wonder, what can one say abot work that has already won the Nobel Prize that can possibly add to the estimation of a work? Being far too insignificant to lend any great weight to the already abundant praise for this work, I can only perhaps illuminate an application of the material that seems to have been overlooked.

Regarding the field of risk management (not the wll street kind, but just regular risk decision making in business) this book is of inestimable value. I have often notices certain biases towards risk aversion or risk taking when business decisions are beign made. Much seemed to be due to the context. This work shows exactly why and how decision bias arises. This is the foundation for the creation of a useful risk decision analytical framework.

The paper of interest to me relate to why people will choose to take or avoid risks that, according to utility theory, are the wrong decisions. For example, why pepole buy insurance even when it is a better financial choice to be uninsured. These works explain why and under what circumstances one's biases override logic. Why this is not a common text on the desk of every risk manager, I will never know.

In this one volume, there is enough information to design an utterly new field of risk management and to solve most every problem one can face. This has become the one reference material that I considre indespensible. throw out the CPCU and ARM texts that you never use and can't bear to read ever again. Chuck them and place this volume in their place and you will be far, far better off.

Obviously constrained by space, but still a helpful guide to the poet's life and work

This short (148 pages including index) book by noted literature scholar Ira B. Nadel aims to familiarize the reader with the remarkably long, if controversial, career of Ezra Pound, one of the major 20th-century modernist poets. Like most volumes in the "Cambridge Introduction to [writer]" series, it is divided into four main chapters: "Life", "Context", "Works" and "Critical reception".

In the first two chapters, Nadel does a great job of mapping Pound's connections with the wider poetry world. This is a poet who seems to have known everybody who's anybody within English poetry, from Thomas Hardy to Allen Ginsberg. His editing, lecturing and publishing activities upon his arrival in London in 1908, his secretarial work for Yeats and exchange of ideas with the Irish master, and his abandonment of England to consort with the Parisian crowd circa 1920 are all covered.

The "Works" chapter is divided into two subsections, "Poetry up to 1920" and "The Cantos". This part, I think, is less successful in that Nadel has to rush through the early poetry in order to stick within Cambridge University Press's allowed page count, with a couple of representative quotations from each of Pound's early collections but not much detail. I also must object to Nadel's failure to note that Pound's ideas about the functioning of Chinese ideograms, such a major part of his work, were fallacious (though he does note that Pound's translations of Confucious are riddled with errors).

While Nadel obviously has great esteem for parts of Pound's output, he is not afraid to call out the bad. He discusses Pound's anti-semitism at some length, and the "Critical reception" chapter quotes such biting appraisals of Pound's work as Robert Graves'.

If you want a quick introduction to Pound's life and work before diving into his poetry, this is a useful guide.

This is old but classic. I would be surprised if anyone is required to read this book anymore. If you are reading it for coursework, then you are lucky that you are in some sort of linguistics classroom. Enjoy!
