He explores the period of Jewish war under Trajan and Hadrian not just as the end of an era, but also as a time of continuity in Jewish life and development in Jewish and Christian origins.

About the Author
William Horbury is a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and a Fellow of the British Academy. His recent publications include Jewish Messianism and the Cult of Christ (1998), Herodian Judaism and New Testament Study (2006), and, with David Noy, Jewish Inscriptions of Graeco-Roman Egypt (1992). He is also the co-editor, with W. D. Davies and J. V. M. Sturdy, of The Cambridge History of Judaism, Volume 3 (1999).

Rome's Other "Jewish" Wars

'While the “Jewish War” of AD 66-73 is better known, Horbury (Cambridge) reminds us that it was neither the first nor the only war during the long and complex history of Romano-Judean relations. So while the subject of his book is the less well-known “Revolt of the Exiles” in AD 115-117 and the “Bar Kokhba Revolt” of 132-136, after a short introduction he gives us a long chapter discussing the available sources in great detail, including not only ancients texts, but also coins, inscriptions, and archaeological materials. The he takes a look at the earlier history of relations between the two peoples, which were not always contentious but usually complex (as Vespasian was fighting the Zealots in Judea in 70, prominent Alexandrine Jews proclaimed him emperor!). Horbury then follows with a long chapter each on the wars of 115-117 and 132-136. While the weakness of the sources make it impossible to have a detailed account of either war, Horbury gives us a look at their origins and objectives, the organization and leadership of the rebellion, even policies, economics, and propaganda, and manages to present a coherent overview of the military operations. This is an excellent work, very well documented (the footnotes are outstanding), and worth reading for anyone interested in ancient military history or Romano-Jewish relations.'
