A GREAT ASSET
By A Customer
I've used this book (in its previous editions) for years in many different kinds of classrooms. It not only helps students review material studied in class, but helps me maintain my focus and remember the many details involved with teaching grammar effectively. It is organized in a logical way and its illustrations are wonderfully clear and entertaining. It is concise, but includes many details that help "round out" a student's understanding of grammar use. Its appendices, including regular and irregular verb forms and spelling rules, are excellent.
The only difficulty I have had with this book is its limited applicability in ESL classes where students have fewer literacy skills. The book is densely written (one page gives examples of the grammar point or points, and the facing page contains varying practice exercises) and therefore can be intimidating or simply too dependent on strong reading and writing skills to be beneficial to students whose educational backgrounds have been substantially interrupted or limited. The type is small and tightly spaced, which may be a concern in teaching younger students or those who, though older, haven't acquired the reading or writing skills necessary to benefit from such a text.
All in all, this book is definitely worth the price.

An Institution In Its Own Right
By Brian Bear
Raymond Murphy's books are ubiquitous, and rightly so. Murphy is something of an institution, and his books must be about the best selling of their kind globally. I have used them for years.

"Basic Grammar in Use" covers pretty much the Elementary and Pre-Intermediate levels, though there are some useful units that could be used at slightly higher levels. The explanations are simple and accessible, and the exercises provided are pretty straight forward.

The only quibble I would have is the lack of contextual exercises in Murphy's books. It would be nice to see some more text-level exercises for students to practice using the forms in a wider context than sentences.

Apart from that, this is still excellent value for money for teachers and students alike.

The Catholic Crusade Against the Movies, 1940-1975, by Gregory D. Black

For more than three decades the Catholic Church through its Legion of Decency controlled the content of Hollywood films. Studios submitted their films to the Legion for a rating, which varied from general approval to condemnation. Documenting the inner workings of the Legion, The Catholic Crusade Against the Movies examines how the Church acquired such control and how the changes in the movie industry and American society at large in the post-World War II era eventually conspired against that institution's power and led to its demise.

Review
"Black is particularly helpful in shedding light on the complex issue of filmscript revision....With clarity and insight, Black has traced the influence of Catholic forms of film censorship as reflecting the maturing process within the church since the days of the Second Vatican Council." Charles Fister, America

"In this worthy sequel to his Hollywood Censored (1994)...Black chronicles how the Legion of Decency imposed its taste and its fear of serious issues on films worldwide." Choice

informative, authoritative, and easy to read
By A Customer
THE book to start with if you are looking for something that will cover the important facts, and key personalities in the history of American film censorship. Black writes authoritatively, as he has accomplished extensive research, has had access to actual historical documents, and is a Professor on the subject. But don't let THAT scare you away...this is by far NOT a textbook. It is an easy read. I especially liked the plot summaries of key controversial films.

Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.
By M KIRK-DUGGAN
A Catholic anti-semite, Joseph Breen, and a Catholic extorionist, Martin Quigley, combined forces with a racist St. Louis Jesuit, Rev. Daniel Lord,SJ, to control the entire United States Movie Industry from 1934 until 1954, via boycotts, ignorant prelate pronouncements, and studio cowardice. Gregory Black details the whole sordid story with archival evidence. Curiously, Black does not highlight the startling evidence that Lord had used the racial theories of the 1920s as a weapon against the Jewish producers of motion pictures. He also downplays the antitrust suits which abolished the vertical integration -- ownership of exhibitors by the studios-- and block booking --requiring the captive exhibitors to take all of the films that a studio produced -- that enabled the movie producers to become victims of a Catholic pressure group, the Legion of Decency. Fr. Lord created a code of conduct for the studios which would protect the "moral ideals of the race." The word "race" which was code for white supremacy in 1930, was used over and over in the Lord-Quigley Proposal for a Motion Picture Code. The code as adopted, reflected American Catholic marriage practices which prohibited miscegnation. The Legion of Decency labeled the mixing of races as part of the Communist conspiracy, in accord with the personal views of Cardinals McIntyre and Spellman; Spellman, like Sen. McCarthy, a closet homosexual. Quite simply the Catholic orgranization agreed to boycott any picture that did not have a Motion Picture Seal and any theatre that dared to show a picture that was "Condemned". The Production Administration agreed to not issue a seal if the Legion objected. Both entities condemned and prohibited foreign and independent productions which threatened the economic dominance of the six major Hollywood studios. Most grotesque was the banning by the Legion of a biography of Martin Luther because Luther's theology was morally unacceptable. Black does not emphasize the American Chruch's misleading pastoral parish level teaching during this period that civil divorce was forbidden. The correct teaching is that remarriage after a civil divorce was and is forbidden. Any picture which "condoned" divorce or miscegnation was malum prohibitum. One enjoys accurate non-polemic social history, and this volume is definitely a must for movie buffs, American Catholic History buffs, and for those political scientists interested in unchecked power. One also notes that during this period, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Soviet Russia, all employed massive censorship to protect the masses from degenerate entertainment. The Legion of Decency was not a unique phenomenon in forbidding any depiction of homosexuality and other "depravities." "[T]he history of filmmaking in Hollywood during the era of censorship []is not a matter of how a few filmmakers got away with something, but that thousands upon thousands of films were refashioned to fit into the [lay Catholic] worldview of the censors. . .What the [censors] did not want, and successfully squelched, was the overt visualization and discussion of controversial issues. . .For more than three decades the Hollywood film industry allowed religious clerics to determine what was moral and immoral, what was socially acceptable political comment and what was not." This was achieved through the "Production Code Administration [Breen]and its alter ego, the Catholic Legion of Decency [Quigley]. This reviewer horrified his fiance in 1955, when he sat when the "voluntary" pledge was offered in her parish church. "Was this man going to be the father of [her] children?" (The reviewer was responsible for 12 pregnancies and seven chilren and 23 years of Catholic sacramental marriage, despite being corrupted by viewing "The Moon is Blue.")

AntiCatholic Propaganda Book
By Simon
This book is just filled with lies in order to attack the Catholic Church. The author of this book has a very anti-catholic bias.
The book discusses how powerful the catholic church was in Hollywood and how it was a bully. In reality the league was only rating films morally and Hollywood was upset because it cut into their profits. Because people not watching their immoral movies meant less money. Hollywood did not want anyone to know about whether or not a movie was immoral. And this book is just a way for the author to get out his anger on Catholicism and Christianity.

The legion of decency basically warned Catholics and other moral individuals about the films which went too far. The Legions was trying to help people they never forced anyone not to see a movie.

The Catholic legion of decency intentions were good and they actually did a lot of good for morals in our country and world. The people behind the entertainment industry always wanted
to promote immoral behavior with no limits. The legion of decency is gone now and well as we can see Hollywood is basically worse than ever. Their are no morals in movies anything goes whether it be attacking Christianity or attacking God or promoting homosexuality, abortion, rape, incest, sex with no limits any act is permitted even brainwashing children. And the same immoral Hollywood this book is defending has destroyed the morals in America. Look at all the sexual diseases and unwanted babies even children having children. Violence has constantly risen every decade.

And Hollywood is known to be run by immoral individuals and many pedophiles as well. And actors and actresses from the beginning have been known to sleep with producers, directors and execs for their parts. Hollywood has always been a dangerous place and even dictator Stalin wanted to take it over because he knew its influence. The legion of decency did not want people to be manipulated or influenced in a bad way. They cared about society unlike Hollywood which only cares about money and promoting their own immoral agenda.

If you read this book remember that the Catholic Legion wanted to avoid bad morals in America but Hollywood wanted to destroy the morals which they have succeeded in destroying.

From Booklist
The wry observation attributed to George Bernard Shaw that "England and America are two countries divided by a common language" finds support in The Cambridge Guide to English Usage. Author Peters, of Macquarie University in Australia, provides evidence that their common language also divides Canada and Australia from the other countries.

Within the A-Z arrangement of brief, to-the-point articles, entries on catalogue and catalog, dived and dove, fitted and fit, freshman and fresher, titbit and tidbit celebrate transatlantic differences, some rather subtle, others more pointed. Peters draws on a range of authorities for her judgments on usage. Those include large databases, such as the 140-million-word Cambridge International Corpus of American English, and other usage guides from throughout the English-speaking world. In line with the most recent of these other handbooks, as well as the irrefutable evidence of present usage, Peters takes a descriptive rather than prescriptive approach. Her analytical discussions of parts of speech, grammatical concepts and constructs, and the like explain the origins of rules but also provide contemporary and historical examples of how usage tempers some rules.

Like other manuals that explain the difference between a monologue and a soliloquy, the lack of meaningful difference between further and farther, the confused state between inquire and enquire, the divergence of salutary and salutatory from their common root, and recent introductions such as emoticons, Cambridge provides sound advice for those who want to understand the English language and use it effectively. More than other manuals, it describes the way in which some usages have a local habitation rather than global recognition.

Considering the abundance of peculiarities and challenges in English usage, Cambridge will strengthen even a library well stocked with other guides. It is a serious book for those serious about language. Those who also enjoy the playfulness of English will continue to appreciate the complementary Penguin Dictionary of American English Usage and Style (Penguin, 2000) and its sometimes witty examples. Often more useful than Fowler
By Khalid Ikram
This book addresses much the same audience as Fowler's "Modern English Usage". It may be sacrilegious, but it is nevertheless true, to say that in many ways it is more useful than Fowler. This book takes a somewhat more liberal view of "correct" usage, pointing out how varied are the opinions of different authorities and good writers. In numerous instances it backs up its opinions by providing data from the 100 million word British National Corpus and of American usage from a subset of 140 million words of American usage from the Cambridge International Corpus. It can thus reliably point out which spellings or usages are more frequent in British or American English, and thus guide the writer addressing a particular audience. It is, of course, unlikely that any single guide to usage will be able to answer every question that may arise in a writer's mind, but this volume should take its place on the shelf beside Fowler, Garner's "Modern American Usage," and "Webster's Dictionary of English Usage."

handy sandwich-break read
By Howard Shippin
At first I was surprised and a little disappointed by the format - it is arranged like a dictionary. I was expecting something that could be read through progressively. However, after getting over that, I enjoy the book. It is full of mini-articles that make interesting reading whenever there's a few minutes to spare over coffee or lunch. Naturally it can also be resorted to as a reference, though I could imagine that to be a hit or miss affair until you get used to its quirky look-up style, with entries on suffixes or parts of words.

Sometimes I think that in the 21st century we should retreat a little to the looser rules of earlier centuries. Do we really have to agonize so much over how best to spell import-words like felafel or taboulie? One nice thing about the book, however, is its consideration of international trends in English and its attempt to bridge between them.

The Sense of the People: Politics, Culture and Imperialism in England, 1715-1785 (Past and Present Publications), by Kathleen Wilson

This exciting study demonstrates the central role of "the people," the empire, and the citizen in eighteenth-century English popular politics. Pioneering in its focus on provincial towns, its attention to the imperial contexts of urban politics and its use of a rich and diverse array of sources--from newspapers, prints and plays to pottery and tea-cloths--it shows how the wide-ranging political culture of English towns attuned ordinary men and women to the issues of state power and thus enabled them to stake their own claims in national and imperial affairs.

Review
"This much anticipated re-examination of English urban political culture builds upon the scholarship of a generation and formulates a narrative of political change that makes imperial considerations crucial....This book is a welcome advance in understanding, and an invitation to further work." The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History

"This is...a book about extra-parliamentary politics that advances useful hypotheses about the ideology of popular opposition based on new and interesting evidence." American Historical Review

"Students of eighteenth-century Britain have eagerly anticipated this book, and it will not disappoint them." Philip Harling, Journal of Social History

"This offers a rich and exciting reading of popular politics and of the popular political cultural dimensions of imperialism that is open to recent methodological developments and up-to-date with the historiography....She handles the gendered, cultural, and imperial dimensions in an interesting fashion and demonstrates the wideranging and multifaceted nature of popular politics." Albion

"...a remarkably extensive reading of eighteenth-century provincial print culture. She has the cultural anthropologist's sense of the importance of public ceremonial." Journal of Interdisciplinary History

"The book demonstrates, richly and convincingly, that an emergent culture of imperialism was connected to an 18th-century urban renaissance. It also yields some provocative insights concerning the ways in which popular politics were inscribed by gender ....this is an important study that will generate much debate among professional historians." Choice

"Students of eighteenth-century Britain have eagerly anticipated this book, and it will not disappoint them. Kathleen Wilson is to be commended for the meticulousness of her research, the general clarity of her prose, and the acuity of her thematic perception. The Sense of the People is a book of the first importance, and it promises to be required reading in graduate seminars for some time to come....Wilson's book is yet another proof of the revival of eighteenth-century British history." Philip Harling, Journal of Social History

"The Sense of The People is a fine book that has already claimed two historical prizes, one from the Royal Historical Society and the other from the Conference on British Studies. Written in a florid style, it seeks to chart the emergence of a new public in English politics beyond the borders of the elite....That said, Wilson certainly does a very creditable job of showing how the discourse of the mid-century decades redefined the relationship of an expanding and buoyant middling English public to the implications of state power and imperial expansion.... Wilson's book is going to be essential reading. Certainly she offers another convincing refutation of the notion that eighteenth-century England was a politically somnolent ancien regime in which high political manoevre and dynastic or religious tensions were all that mattered." Nicholas Rogers, Canadian Journal of History

"...this book, by virtue of its broad vision and sense of change, its probings in depth, and its chronological sweep provides us with an important new perspective on eighteenth-century English politics." Daniel A. Baugh, Albion

From the Back Cover
The people, the empire, the political subject: all three were contentious issues in the politics and culture of eighteenth-century English cities. This study explores how these three issues came to occupy central roles in the wide-ranging political cultures of English towns between the Hanoverian Succession and the American war, enabling a variety of groups outside the structures of the state to claim a stake in national affairs.
