The authors argue that American patriotism is a civil religion organized around a sacred flag, whose followers engage in periodic blood sacrifice of their own children to unify the group. Using an anthropological theory, this groundbreaking book presents and explains the ritual sacrifices and regeneration that constitute American nationalism, the factors making particular elections or wars successful or unsuccessful rituals, the role of the mass media in the process, and the sense of malaise that has pervaded American society during the post-World War II period.

AN INSTANT CLASSIC
By Richard Koenigsberg
This is a great work of social science, one of the most significant books of our time. Marvin and Ingle state that "The underlying cost of all society is the violent death of some of its members." In contrast to the view that societal violence is something that occasionally "happens" in spite of our best efforts, the authors argue that violence is INHERENT WITHIN THE VERY NATURE AND STRUCTURE OF "SOCIETY."
Many writers speak about the naturally "aggressive" nature of human beings. Marvin and Ingle understand that violence has a deeper source, namely the societal compulsion to SACRIFICE ITS OWN MEMBERS IN THE NAME OF THE SACRED (NATIONAL) IDEAL. It is this SACRIFICAL meaning of violence that human beings refuse to perceive.
The authors state that "OUR DEEPEST SECRET, THE COLLECTIVE GROUP TABOO, IS KNOWLEDGE THAT SOCIETY DEPENDS ON THE DEATH OF SACRIFICIAL VICTIMS AT THE HANDS OF THE GROUP ITSELF."
Our capacity to understand the nature of human society requires perceiving this relationship between sacred groups and collective violence. This book represents a significant step toward revealing and articulating this relationship.
The book is highly recommended for social theorists, anthropologists, historians and political scientists.

Power through Weakness: Paul's Understanding of the Christian Ministry in 2 Corinthians (Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series

This work makes sense of the apostle Paul's paradoxical description of his ministry in 2 Corinthians: "When I am weak, then I am strong!" In an extensive inquiry into the thought-world of Roman Corinth, Savage demonstrates that the Corinthians are evaluating Paul according to the social standards of their day. Since this is the exact antithesis of his own perspective, Paul can only resort to paradox by way of defense.

Review
"This book is a masterful treatment of Paul's defense of his ministry in 2 Corinthians, a ministry that, ironically, though 'weak' in the eyes of the Corinthians, demonstrated the power of God." Roy Zuck, Bibliotheca Sacra

"This is a sensible book that seeks to explain the paradoxical language of the apostle Paul regarding the nature and character of his ministry in canonical 2 Corinthians....the exegetical portions of this volume make it worthy not only of reading but of study." Thomas Gillespie, Journal of Biblical Literature

"This is a book that will benefit scholar and minister alike." Eugene Hensell O.S.B., The Catholic Biblical Quarterly

From the Back Cover
Power through weakness examines one of the most profound pictures of Christian life ever presented - the apostle Paul's cryptic self-portrait in 2 Corinthians: 'When I am weak, then I am strong!' The key to understanding this tantalising paradox, Dr Savage suggests, is to take note of the very secular outlook permeating the church at Corinth. In an extensive enquiry into the thought-world of Roman Corinth, drawing insights from first-century inscriptions, coins and archaeology, he demonstrates that the Corinthians were evaluating Paul according to the social standards of their day. Because those standards represented the exact antithesis of his own perspective, which was rooted in the cross of Christ, Paul had little choice but to defend himself with the brush strokes of paradox. This is the first major study to marshal evidence from the general social atmosphere of antiquity to interpret Paul's paradoxical teaching. The result is stunning: the cross-centred outlook of Paul emerges as a radical foil to the spirit of the age.

Scholarly, penetrating, insightful, profoundly helpful
By Robert P. Odle
Paul's claim, "When I am weak, then I am strong," appears to be a clear absurdity. It attempts to harmonize two mutually exclusive terms. Christian ministry as comfort experienced through suffering, glory manifested through shame, life working through death, riches won through poverty, and power expressed through weakness borders on gibberish. It at least presents a paradox. In the book Dr. Savage seeks to make sense of this paradox.

Dr. Savage argues that it is this paradox-a paradox finding expression in a number of different antitheses-that drives to the heart of what it means to Paul to be a minister (diakonoi) of Christ. To fully comprehend the paradox Dr. Savage argues that we must first understand the background to Paul's paradoxical teaching. Unfortunately, this background is notoriously illusive for two reasons: (1) first, the letter we call 2 Corinthians was directed to "the intruder" (7:12) about whom we know very little, and (2) second, the letter was written to a community of faith enmeshed within a cultural setting about which we know very little.

Dr. Savage is a meticulous scholar. But, not only is he an impressive scholar he is also a skilled, insightful, and precise analyst. His insights into the Corinthian culture generally help explain the probable character traits, or at least the tendencies, of the recipients of the letter. Although it is merely alluded to in passing in a few places in the text, under Dr. Savage's meticulous examination it becomes obvious that Paul's paradoxical teaching emerges out of a specific conflict between the apostle and his converts. This conclusion opens the way for a more precise inquiry into the details of that conflict. It is in the pursuit of this inquiry that Dr. Savage makes his most useful contribution to our understanding of 2 Corinthians.

It is the radical disjunction between the secular prejudices of the Corinthians and the apostle's own conception of Christ that spawns the paradoxical description of Christian ministry. What we witness in 2 Corinthians is a clash between value systems. The Corinthians were clearly products of the times-secular to the core and intoxicated on the outlook of their world. Paul, on the other hand, was attempting to conform everything he had and everything he did to the story of the cross. Dr. Savage does an outstanding job of framing the difficult teaching of the letter within this all-too-familiar context: secular v. kingdom values.

Dr. Savage is able to enumerate the often multiple viewpoints of modern scholarship on the issues he discusses without producing a large, cumbersome commentary (the entire book is less than 200 pages). In addition, Dr. Savage not only explains the multiple alternative viewpoints but he also critiques them offering a logical, coherent alternative without ever coming across as argumentative or demeaning.

What results from these profoundly helpful and rare scholarly characteristics is one of the most useful commentaries on 2 Corinthians available. Once the reader has absorbed the information garnered from Dr. Savage's thorough research and seen the point of Paul's letter under his penetrating analysis, what may have previously been a patchy, obscure, and difficult New Testament letter suddenly becomes a masterpiece of persuasion. Not only that, but it also emerges as a living document that powerfully speaks to the core of who we are as a culture in North America.

Uses classical history to rethink 2Cor. Brilliant!.
By A Customer
Savage shows us that the status-hungry,
fast-money, glory-oriented 1st century
metropolis of Corinth sounds much like
our own society. In a society of briliance,
beauty, and braggarts, Paul didn't fit.
Weakness was his only strength and
Moses became his model. A very lively,
spiritually rewarding academic book. Some
familiarity with Pauline study may help.
But very clear for an advanced level study.

A Good Read to Understand the Cultural Background of Corinth
By Biblical Reader
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read this book after having read Marshall's book on Enmity, Sze-kar Wan's book, Power in Weakness, and Winter's book on Paul and the Philosophers. I think Savage's book is far superior to all these books. Savage takes the point that the correct way to understand the reason why Paul is attacked and disliked in Corinth by both members of the congregation and those who have recently come to the church after having written 1 Corinthians is to be found in the social-self-interest background of Corinth. Savage makes the strong point that too much interest has been focused on the spirituality of those at Corinth at the expense of understanding the cultural setting of Corinth.

The Will: Volume 1, Dual Aspect Theory, by Brian O'Shaughnessy

The phenomenon of action in which the mind moves the body has puzzled philosophers over the centuries. In this new edition of a classic work of analytical philosophy, Brian O'Shaughnessy investigates bodily action and attempts to resolve some of the main problems. His expanded and updated discussion examines the scope of the will and the conditions in which it makes contact with the body, and investigates the epistemology of the body. He sheds light upon the strangely intimate relation of awareness in which we stand to our own bodies, doing so partly through appeal to the concept of the body-image. The result is a new and strengthened emphasis on the vitally important function of the bodily will as a transparently intelligible bridge between mind and body, and the proposal of a dual aspect theory of the will.

Review
'Brian O'Shaughnessy is one of the best philosophers in England ....He has worked by himself largely outside of contemporary philosophical society, and these wild and wonderful volumes reveal with what intensity and on what a scale he has worked ... A good philosopher must find his obsession, and it will drive him for the rest of his life .... O'Shaughnessy's obsession has been with the most intimate of those relations in which the self stands to the physical or 'external' world; its relation to that part of the physical world which it can move directly and of which it has immediate awareness - the body ... The result is a theory of mind and body much richer than anything Wittgenstein would have allowed himself. With its strong personality and wonderful flights of language ... the book is accessible to anyone with a taste for sustained philosophical argument and plenty of time.' Thomas Nagel, The Times Literary Supplement

About the Author
Brian O'Shaughnessy is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at King's College London. He is author of Consciousness and the World (2000) and many articles on the philosophy of mind.

Drawing on research from a range of ethnic groups around the world, it shows how language contributes to the social and psychological processes involved in the formation of ethnic identity, exploring both the linguistic features of ethnic language varieties and also the ways in which language is used by different ethnic groups. Complete with discussion questions and a glossary, Language and Ethnicity will be welcomed by students and researchers in sociolinguistics, as well as anybody interested in ethnic issues, language and education, inter-ethnic communication, and the relationship between language and identity.

Companion Animals and Us: Exploring the Relationships between People and PetsFrom Cambridge University Press

Over the past thirty years there has been a tremendous growth in interest in the multidisciplinary field of human-companion animal interactions and relationships. The increased interest in human-pet relationships is not surprising considering that pets are kept in at least half of the households in Western societies. What is so special about the relationships people have with their pets? Are we very different from our ancestors in the way we feel about animals? What does pet keeping tell us about ourselves and our relationships with people? Can pets be good for our health? Does having pets help promote empathy for other humans? Companion Animals and Us brings together some of the newest research from a wide variety of disciplines including anthropology, history, psychology, sociology, and human and veterinary medicine to explore these and many other questions. This book will provide fascinating reading for anyone interested in understanding more about the human-pet relationships.

The second edition of this guide to Poland has been updated to take account of the years from 1989-2005. This period marked its liberation from the Soviet Union, the birth of Poland's 'Third Republic' and, recently, its accession to the European Union in 2004. Poland's history has been marked by its resilience. Once a dominant force in central and eastern Europe and home to a remarkable experiment in consensual politics, it was excised from the map by its neighbours in 1795. Resurrected in 1918, partitioned afresh during the Second World War, it survived to become a satellite of the Soviet Union. Yet in the 1980s, it was Poland which blazed the trail in casting off communism, and was finally able to reassert its Christian heritage. With its updated bibliography and new chronology, the book is the ideal companion for all looking for a comprehensive survey of this fascinating country.

Definative
By Mieczyslaw Kasprzyk
This is beyond a doubt the best history of Poland I have read so far (and I run a website on Polish History). It is concise yet detailed enough for any reader or for the curious. There are fascinating facts that one does not come across in any of the other histories which add to the general background and it is written in a eminently readable fashion. Lukowski is a very familiar name amongst students of Polish History - his account of the Partitions is a classic and the partnership with Zawadzki makes me want to read that historian's work also. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you want a History of Poland then this is the definative version.

A great overview of Polish history
By Monica Wanat
If you have no knowledge of Polish history, this book is a good place the start. The authors recommend Playground of the Gods if you are looking for a more detailed history of Poland, but I haven't read those yet so I can't "offically" recommend them.
This book covers basic events and ideas that occured in Poland for the past 1000 years. In addition to politics and military events, the authors attempt to list cultural figures, such as Chopin, and how those figures reflected or affected Polish events.
There were few details on events most people normally think about when they think of Poland, such as concentration camps and WWII. However, these issues aren't ignored entirely, just given the same coverage as other events in Polish history.

A Solid Overview of Polish History
By Jan Peczkis
This book gives balanced detail to the different epochs of Polish history beginning with prehistory and ending with the fall of Communism.

Many interesting facts are presented in this book. For instance, the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Krakow was completed in 1397. (p. 52). In the 19th century, Russian revolutionaries Herzen and Bakunin supported the resurrection of the Polish state. (p. 163). In 1909, the Boryslaw-Drohobycz oil fields accounted for 5% of the world's oil production. (p. 162). Finally, Kiev had a large and thriving Polish intelligentsia as recently as 1917. (p. 164).

Some writers have claimed that Marie Curie-Sklodowska, following her move to France, increasingly distanced herself from her Polish heritage. In apparent refutation of this, the authors point out that Curie always maintained close contact with Poland, and was instrumental in establishing the Radium Institute in Warsaw in 1932. (p. 163). This was shortly before her death.

During the interwar period, popular illiteracy was reduced from 33% to 15%, and mortality rates were cut in half. A modest beginning was made in mechanization. In 1939, Poland had 2,000 tractors compared with France's 30,000. (pp. 221-222). (Of course, much agriculture all over Europe at the time was still non-mechanized).

A unique aspect of this book is its detailed list, in the back, of all of Poland's rulers, beginning with the dynasties. The list includes foreign rulers of Prussian-occupied, Austrian-occupied, and Russian-occupied Poland, as well the Communist rulers of Poland in the 20th century. There is even a listing of leaders of the Polish Government in Exile in London, which existed in the years 1939-1990.

The Cambridge Companion to Jonathan Edwards (Cambridge Companions to Religion), by George M. Marsden, Kenneth P. Minkema, David D. Hall, A

Long recognized as 'America's theologian', Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is seen as instrumental in the Great Awakening of the 1740s that gripped much of New England and that laid the groundwork for an American Protestant religious identity. This Cambridge Companion offers a general, comprehensive introduction to Jonathan Edwards and examines his life and works from various disciplinary perspectives including history, literature, theology, religious studies, and philosophy. The book consists of seventeen chapters written by leading religious scholars, historians and literary critics on Edwards' life, work, and legacy. The Companion will be an invaluable aid to teachers and scholars and will be imminently accessible to those just encountering Edwards for the first time.

Review
"[the] collection of authors is first-rate and the work they have produced sterling." -The Christian Century

"... chapters are informative ... and give us a truer picture of the man than the popular caricature of a fierce preacher of hellfire sermons ...' -Baptist Quarterly

"These are solid, reliable, and helpful essays-just what a literary companion should be. ...they serve to orient the reader to further reading. Edwards might have found this Cambridge Companion more amiable than its Princeton cousin: more rooted in historical context, more attuned to evangelical themes and less engaged in the intellectual abstractions and technical distractions offered by the theologians. -Theological Studies

About the Author
Stephen J. Stein (born March 22, 1940) holds the Ph.D. from Yale University. He has served as Chair of the Department of Religious Studies and also as Director of the American Studies Program at Indiana University where he taught for 35 years. He retired in May 2005. He was named Chancellor's Professor in 1995. In 1994 he was the President of the American Society of Church History. In 1995 he was the recipient of the Tracy Sonneborn Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research. He has been the recipient of numerous grants, including two research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is the editor of three volumes in the Yale Edition of The Works of Jonathan Edwards: Apocalyptic Writings (1977), Notes on Scripture (1998), and The 'Blank Bible' (forthcoming 2006). His volume, The Shaker Experience in America: A History of the United Society of Believers (Yale Press, 1992) was awarded the Philip Schaff Prize by the American Society of Church History. His research interests have focused heavily on eighteenth-century colonial American religious history, but his research publications also span the broad topic of apocalyptic and millennial studies as well as the study of New Religious Movements. He has published articles in such journals as Church History, Harvard Theological Review, William and Mary Quarterly, New England Quarterly, Early American Literature, Filson Club History Quarterly, Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, Journal of the Early Republic, Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, Communal Societies, American Quarterly, Religion and American Culture, etc., etc.. Stein's volume on the Shakers is widely regarded as the definitive history of that religious community; it spans more than two centuries of Shaker experience. His editorial work with the Edwards Edition has opened an area of scholarship, namely, Edwards's biblical writings, that had received very little scholarly attention prior to his work. His years

Fine introduction to colonial America's greatest theologian and philosopher
By R. Pennoyer
I read somewhere that the essay by George Marsden "Biography" included in this edited volume is itself worth the price of the book. That may be true, but thankfully we don't have to make that decision. The remaining essays also contribute solidly to the value of the work.

ORGANIZATION: After an introductory overview by the editor Stephen J. Stein, the sixteen essays that constitute the body of the text are organized into three sections: "Edward's Life and Context," "Edward's Roles and Achievements" and "Edward's Legacy and Reputation." Each essay is written by an established Edwards scholar, many of whom have been directly involved in the ongoing production of the Yale Edition of "The Works of Jonathan Edwards" - a project nearing completion in published volumes, and now with a companion interactive web site.

PERSPECTIVE: This volume reflects the very best of current Edwards research. The fact that it is complete with footnotes, index, and bibliography will allow it to be an excellent springboard for further study. Most refreshing, perhaps, is the fact that although it is scholarly it is consistently sympathetic to its subject. Absent, thankfully, are the kind of polemics and caricatures of Edwards (and his times) that are the bane of lesser works on the subject. Even the last essay "Edwards and Social Issues" which explicitly seeks to view the subject from the perspective of "class, age, gender, sex, and race" - and could have been a train wreck from a lesser hand - turns out to be an interesting, informative, and fair treatment by its author Ava Chamberlain.

INDIVIDUAL ESSAYS: Favorites entries will depend on one's interests. The whole first section was sparkling for me, as were a number of the other essays. Even though the entries are of a consistently high quality, there are some challenges to the reader related primarily to the fact that this is a collection of individual essays. For example, two or three of the essays in the final section seem to overlap in coverage and, as a result, that portion may drag a little for the reader. Also, occasionally the content of an essay does not seem to perfectly match the assigned title. The best example may be Harry Stout's "Edwards as Revivalist." While extremely rewarding, this essay actually focuses on the narrative theology of Jonathan Edwards as presented in his epic "A History of the Work of Redemption" - a subject only tangentially related to religious revival. Finally, Stephen Daniel's entry "Edwards as Philosopher" is fascinating but, frankly, beyond my capacity to understand on first reading. Perhaps if Daniel employed more analogies - the stock in trade of the philosophy teacher - he could have made Edwards' philosophy more comprehensible to the non-specialist.

With this volume in hand, what I need to do now is to turn afresh to the study of the primary texts - that is, the works of Jonathan Edwards himself. We have a lot to learn here. As C. S. Lewis wrote in advocating the reading of great works from the past, "People were no cleverer then than they are now; they made as many mistakes as we. But not the SAME mistakes."
