This important collection of essays brings together both established figures and new researchers to offer fresh perspectives on the ever controversial subject of the history of witchcraft. Using Keith Thomas's Religion and the Decline of Magic as a starting point, the contributors explore the changes of the last twenty-five years in the understanding of early modern witchcraft, and suggest new approaches, especially concerning the cultural dimensions of the subject. Witchcraft cases must be understood as power struggles, over gender and ideology as well as social relationships, with a crucial role played by alternative representations. Witchcraft was always a contested idea, never fully established in early modern culture but much harder to dislodge than has usually been assumed. The essays are European in scope, with examples from Germany, France and the Spanish expansion into the New World, as well as a strong core of English material.

Essays centered on Keith Thomas' classic

This is another fine collection of essays on witchcraft. To be able to fully appreciate the contributions, one should have read Keith Thomas' classic study "Religion and the decline of magic", as most authors refer to the chapters on witchcraft in Thomas' book, and to the related research done by Alan Macfarlane. This is what binds the contributions to this book together. A very interesting essay is the one by Brian Levack on state-building and witch hunting, but that may be my personal bias, as Levack's "The witch hunt in early modern Europe" (another classic) first got me seriously interested in the subject a few years ago. Apart from Levack, there's an essay referring to Dutch witchcraft material, and a contribution by Lyndal Roper, which is identical to chapter 9 of her "Oedipus and the devil".

Beware non-Kaufmann Kindle version

I love Amazon, but you have to be careful about the way very different versions of a book sometimes wind up on the same sales page with their reader reviews mixed together. At the time I am writing, the page for the Walter Kaufmann translation of the Gay Science lists a Kindle edition for 99 cents, but that edition is not the Kaufmann. It is a new version of Thomas Common's poor translation from a hundred years ago; without its slight re-editing, this public domain version is available free elsewhere. Although I do see one contrary opinion in the reviews, the vast majority of readers greatly prefer the Kaufmann translation, and until that is made available for Kindle, I would suggest one of the inexpensive used copies of the paperback, which you can also get on this page. _That_ is a five star book.

EDITED IN OCTOBER 2015: As of THIS date, you can get a Kindle version of the Kaufmann translation for 11.99. A bit pricey for a Kindle reissue, but still worth it (and it may come down sometimes). If you are not seeing that version on the page where you read this review, do another search in the Kindle department, just searching for "Kaufmann," nothing else, and you should find it; you may have to go through a few pages. Price and accessibility may change in the future, of course.

It more like a collection of Nietzsche's random thoughts and poems

OK. This book is weird. It more like a collection of Nietzsche's random thoughts and poems. But if you slog through it, you will be rewarded at the end. Like Plato, in his Republic (which I LOVED), he finishes with a grand flourish. This is also the book where Nietzsche makes his famous statement, "God is dead".

Nice to read for pleasure.

I did like this book but i didn't really find that he was presenting arguments , it was more a compilation of personal thoughts. I found the reading pretty easy. I did enjoy reading it and i recommend it for "To read for pleasure".

About the Author
John Archer is Professor of Psychology at the University of Central Lancashire. His research interests are aggression, violence, sex and gender, and grief. He is the author of a number of books, including The Nature of Grief (1999), Ethology and Human Development (1992) and The Behavioural Biology of Aggression (1988). He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and President-Elect of the International Society for Research on Aggression.

Barbara B. Lloyd is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Sussex where she was previously Reader in Social Psychology. Barbara has an active psychoanalytic psychotherapy practice and was a founding member and Chair of the Brighton Association of Analytic Psychotherapists. Barbara is the author of a number of books including Social Representations and the Development of Knowledge (Cambridge, 1990) and Gender Identities and Education. The Impact of Starting School (1992) with Gerard Duveen. She also published Smoking in Adolescence: Images and Identities (with Kevin Lucas, 1998) which describes her current research. She is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Full Member of the British Association of Psychotherapists.

About the Author
Jianguo (Jingle) Wu is Professor of Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Science at Arizona State University. His research interests include landscape ecology, urban ecology, and sustainability science, focusing on hierarchical patch dynamics, pattern-process-scale relationships, spatial scaling, land use change and its effects on ecosystem processes, and biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. He has published more than 120 scientific papers which involved mostly dryland ecosystems in North America and China. His professional service includes Program Chair of the 2001 Annual Symposium of the US Association for Landscape Ecology (US-IALE), Councillor-at-Large of US-IALE (2001-2003), Chair of Asian Ecology Section of Ecological Society of America (1999-2000), and Task Leader of GCTE of International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (1997-2002). He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Landscape Ecology.

Richard J. Hobbs is Professor of Environmental Science at Murdoch University, Western Australia, and has research interests in restoration ecology and landscape ecology, focusing on the conservation and management of altered landscapes, particularly the agricultural area of southwestern Australia. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and has been listed by ISI as one of the most highly cited researchers in Ecology and Environmental Science. His professional services include President of the International Association for Landscape Ecology 1999-2003 and President of the Ecological Society of Australia 1998-1999. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Restoration Ecology.
