an outstanding contribution to the literature

I am not a philosopher, but have been studying Heidegger, especially the secondary literature, for many decades. This superb work may not be for the first-time reader of Heidegger's thought, but it is so lucid and well-organized that although for me it required careful, "slow" reading, it should be quite accessible to anyone who is even superficially acquainted with that thought; it would also be invaluable to the more experienced reader. Paradoxically, it is introductory in a sense, yet advanced. The book clarifies key issues in Heidegger's later thought, ones that typically are passed over in the other critiques I know. It carefully explains and explores his key term, "ontotheology"; usefully contributes to the already available voluminous discussions of "technological" or "calculative" thinking (roughly: "Gestell"); in the context of university education examines in great detail Heidegger's proposed alternatives to that calculative thinking; and, contributes thoughtfully to the many already available extensive debates and discussions pertaining to Heidegger's role in the Nazi regime. Furthermore, the author obviously is sensitive to and considerate of the reader's plight in understanding complex, difficult, highly non-standard material, and expands on major and minor points in highly useful, clear, well-organized ways. Obviously, I am much taken with this work--something that does not happen to me very often!

Just to reinforce what others have stated...

This book is a fantastic contribution to the vast array of books on Heidegger's thought. It shows the development of his philosophy over time and his confrontation with the tragedy of Nazism in a positive way, rather than re-hashing dry debates over whether or not in condemns his project as a whole. The book flows very well and Thomson presents his arguments wonderfully. The points are explained lucidly and in depth, and he makes sure to integrate the each one into the overall thesis of the book. The organization of the sections is superb, his writing is clear, manageable, and yet still revealing, and the topics that are covered in the book fit into a cohesive whole that forms a powerful critique of our post-modern age.

In sum, I highly recommend this book to any who are grappling with Heidegger's thought.

Thomson's groundbreaking study skillfully combines (1) a rigorous philosophical analysis of the foundations of Heidegger's later philosophy, (2) a convincing historical reconstruction of the link between Heidegger's philosophy and his infamous involvement with Nazism, and (3) a demonstration of the continuing relevance of Heidegger to the contemporary crisis of purpose in higher education. The book is informative, meticulous, and beautifully- written. It is philosophically substantive without bogging the reader down in minutiae, serious without being turgid. Thomson writes in a clear and crisp style that is a joy to read, and he has much to say that is of interest -- not only to students of Heidegger, but to anyone concerned with the future of the university and, indeed, civilization as a whole. Students of the history of philosophy will find here one of the best available introductions to the Later Heidegger. Weary veterans of the controversy over Heidegger's politics should welcome Thomson's moderate position as a sensible and much-needed attempt at mediation between the warring factions. Disspirited culture-warriors will find new food for thought and discussion in Thomson's suggestions regarding how we might apply Heidegger's best insights to rejuvenate the university and society. This book is a veritable feast for the mind. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down!

About the Author
Albert Moran is professor in the School of Arts, Media and Culture at Griffith University. His academic qualifications include MA (Syd), BEd (La Trobe) and PhD (Griffith). He has written or edited over 20 books, including Copycat TV (1998), Television Across Asia (2004) and Historical Dictionary of Australian and New Zealand Cinema (2005).

Errol Vieth is senior lecturer in film and communication in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Education at Central Queensland University. He has qualifications in Arts and Education and his PhD was in science fiction film. He is the author of Screening Science: Contexts, Texts and Science in Fifties Science Fiction Film (Lanham, Md.: Scarecrow Press, 2001) and, with Albert Moran, the Historical Dictionary of Australian and New Zealand Cinema (Lanham, Md.: Scarecrow Press, 2005).

About the Author
Allan Macinnes is Burnett-Fletcher Professor of History at the University of Aberdeen. He has published extensively on Covenants, Clans and Clearances, British State Formation and Jacobitism. His previous publications include Clanship, Commerce and the House of Stuart, 1603-1788 (1996) and, as co-editor with A. H. Williamson, Shaping the Stuart World, 1603-1714: the American Connection (2006).

Very useful study of the creation of Britain

Allan I. Macinnes is Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Strathclyde. This is a very useful account of the 1707 Union of England and Scotland which created the new state of Great Britain.
Macinnes writes, "The Hanoverian Succession, promoted in England in 1701 and accepted in Ireland by 1703, was only secured in Scotland by the Union. At the same time, the ongoing War of the Spanish Succession threatened to become the War of the British Succession once Louis XIV of France recognized Anne's Roman Catholic half-brother as James III (& VIII). In this light, the Union was less relevant to perpetuating the Revolution than to securing a Protestant Succession ..."
"the making of the Treaty of Union also required a core group of determined Scottish politicians intent on political incorporation to secure the royal prerogative, the Presbyterian establishment in the Kirk and, ultimately, the Protestant Succession at the expense of an independent Scottish parliament no less than the exiled Catholic House of Stuart."

First rate history

Rowse traces the history of Aboriginal contact with white settlers by examining the economic rewards offered to the indigenous people by pastoralists and missionaries, from the first distribution of foodstuffs through the integration of Aboriginal people into a cash economy in the last 50 years. This is a book that wil suprise you with insights and connections, make even statistics live, and demonstrate how comlicated the skein of relationships between black and white in Australia hav ebeen and continue to be. Each transaction seems to offer good and bad, and although Rowse never attempts to speak for the Aboriginal people, but only examines the voices of whitefellas through their leavings in the historical record, he manages to pressent a balanced and nuanced understanding of both sides of the frontier.

Defining Race and Society

I had to read this particular work for my American Race Relations Class at Rutgers University. If you are interested in how the concept of "race" developed, and Western society has used it through history, this work is useful in understanding those concepts and theories that would be applied in Western society. You will learn how the concepts would become corrupted into what we know today as racism and such. Honestly, the book is fairly bland academic reading, with very little "real life" situations. The author attempts as much objectivity as possible, but the text tends to be even more philosophical about the definitions regarding society and race than necessary. In essence, a detailed account of how race is used in and it affects society. However, its more than dense enough to turn off the average reader. There are more interesting works that describe the same concepts through the way people use them and interact with each other. However, in understanding the theory and the concept behind the social construct, this work is reccommendable.
