Descartes: The World and Other Writings (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy), by René Descartes

Descartes' The World offers the most comprehensive vision of the nature of the world since Aristotle, and is crucial for an understanding of his later writings, in particular the Meditations and Principles of Philosophy. Above all, it provides an insight into how Descartes conceived of natural philosophy before he started to reformulate his doctrines in terms of a skeptically-driven epistemology. This volume offers a new translation of the work together with related writings that illuminate it, including the first English translation of the complete text of The Description of the Human Body.

Not Your Average Cup of Metaphysical Tea
By P. McIntyre
Forget what you thought you learned in your freshman survey of Western philosophy about the Descartes whose thought so nicely compliments "the Matrix".

Descartes spent a great deal of time in his other major works such as "The Discourse on Method", "The Principles of Philosophy", and even the "Meditations" trying to prepare his audiences for the mechanist theory he had already worked out in this work, which includes "The Treatise on Light "and "The Treatise on Man". My advice to you is to cut to the chase; this work is what Descartes was really about.

"The World" was never published during Descartes's lifetime, having been suppressed after the 1633 condemnation of Galileo. In the first section, Descartes presents through the imaginary figure of a "new world" a mechanist explanation of the universe and its intricate system of vorticies, in which he does his best to refute both the seventeenth century atomist and the long-reigning Aristotelian Scholasticism's cosmological theories. Similarly, in the "The Treatise on Man", Descartes describes, through the heuristic of an imaginary automatist machine, the functions of the human body, including comprehensive accounts of sensation, the circulatory system, and the nervous system (what Descartes famously calls "the animal spirits").

The fact is, Descartes' metaphysics largely simplify Medieval accounts and just reiterate what every Jesuit would have been learning in school anyway. His mechanist physics is what was new and exciting about his work within the context of the seventeenth century. If you are interested in the history of philosophy or science, you will be doing yourself a great service to familarize yourself with this work.

Samuel Wilson reviews the evidence for migration and cultural change throughout the archipelago, dealing in particular with periods of cultural interaction when groups with different cultures and histories were in contact.

a fresh review of Caribbean early history
By Jalil Sued Badillo
[[ASIN:0521626226 The Archaeology of the Caribbean (Cambridge World Archaeology)Sam Wilson's new book is a refreshing review of the early history of the Caribbean. Long awaited by both archaeologists and ethnohistorians, locals as well as non locals. The work does justice to many interpretations long held back in the dark by traditionalists and conservatives. The region has always managed to resist single minded interpretations of its human experience and Wilson's updates and insights will be well received.

Comprehensive summary of recent thinking in the field by one it's leading lights. Considering that it is Cambridge imprint, the editing is shockingly poor. It is littered with misspellings, and missing and extra words, and in desparate need of better maps. Otherwise, it is the book to read.

Comprehensive and brief, but the editing needs some work
By Fred C.
This book is slender (180 small pages of text, with illustrations) but it manages to present up-to-date research on Caribbean archaeology comprehensively. The "pluralist" approach is interesting and consistent, and the descriptions of ecological adaptation are good. There is an invitation to a more radical approach to the Taínos (some paragraphs -- pages 142, 144, and 174, for instance -- do come out and say that the tag "Taínos" may be mistakenly merging different cultures under a false identity). However, the invitation is curiously tempered by several pages on Taíno society and repeated references to the Taíno. Something similar happens with the Island Caribs (page 148). On a side note, the book is full of typos and other mistakes (wrong references to figures, the fifth of seven chapters starts by saying it is the "final" chapter). I counted more than 15 of such errata, and for such a small book, and published by the excellent CUP, it came as a surprise.

Mr. Tompkins is back! The mild-mannered bank clerk with the short attention span and vivid imagination has inspired, charmed, and informed young and old alike since the publication of the hugely successful Mr Tompkins in Paperback (by George Gamow) in 1965. Now, this highly affable character returns to embark on a set of adventures that explore the extreme edges of the universe--the smallest, the largest, the fastest, and the farthest. Just by following the experiences and dreams of Mr. Tompkins, readers discover and come to know the merry dance of cosmic mysteries, including: Einstein's theory of relativity, bizarre effects near light-speed, the birth and death of the universe, black holes, quarks, space warps and antimatter, the fuzzy world of the quantum, and that ultimate cosmic mystery--love. The story of Mr. Tompkins' journey to the frontiers of modern physics will delight and inform all readers. Russell Stannard is a best-selling popular science writer and the author of the critically acclaimed Uncle Albert series of science books for children.

From Scientific American
Some 60 years ago physicist Gamow conceived the notion of presenting scientific ideas to the layperson through the medium of a fictional character, C.G.H. Tompkins, "a bank clerk interested in modern science." (Tompkins's initials derive from three fundamental physical constants: c, the velocity of light; G, the gravitational constant; and h, the quantum constant.) Gamow produced two popular books featuring Tompkins and then combined them in Mr. Tompkins in Paperback. Now science writer Stannard presents a considerably revised version of that book. Tompkins is still a willing if rather dim learner in his associations with a physicist identified only as "the professor." Gamow and Stannard, through the professor and his daughter, Maud (who marries Tompkins in chapter 10), deal with such concepts as relativity, quantum theory and the structure of the atom. The reader will get both entertainment and plenty of information about modern physics and astrophysics.

EDITORS OF SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN

Review
"[Mr. Tompkins's] adventures and mishaps illuminate in startling fashion the oddities of relativity and quantum theory. Much loved by physics students a generation ago, Mr. Tompkins now embarks on some new escapades, courtesy of coauthor Stannard, who updated the original tales and added illustrations in Gamow's appealingly simple style." Science News

"This revision makes Mr Tompkins not only more accessible to the present generation of both scientists and nonscientists, but more in tune with current science and sensibilities." Science Books and Films

"The best just got better....It is absolutely the best place to get a feel for the most important scientific ideas of the 20th century. It is also a perfect way to get to visual grips with relativity theory and quantum mechanics." The Independent

"The real measure of Stannard is that the new material is covered comprehensibily and in a style that matches the original." The Times Higher Education Supplement

"The best just got better...It is absolutely the best place to get a feel for the most important scientific ideas of the 20th century. It is also a perfect way to get to visual grips with relativity theory and quantum mechanics." The Independent

"The reader will get both entertainment and plenty of information about modern physics." Scientific American

"...a lovely book which I am sure everyone interested in modern physics, from the age of eleven upwards, will enjoy enormously." Nature

"If newcomers who have not seen the original read the book, they will find a charming, whimsical introduction to modern physics...The New World...is a unique book." Physics Today

Russell Stannard has established a reputation as one of the most gifted popularisers of science through numerous media appearances and projects, and in particular for his Uncle Albert Trilogy (The Time and Space of Uncle Albert, Black Holes and Uncle Albert and the Quantum Quest), which covers the work of Albert Einstein and quantum theory in a way that is accessible to children of 11+. Mr Tompkins' Adventure in Physical Wonderland Modernized
By Tatsuo Tabata
The famous physicist and excellent popularizer of science George Gamow wrote the original version of this book "Mr Tompkins in Paperback" in 1965. Since then the understanding of the physical world from its smallest to largest entities has shown much progress. Thus the book, which was once one of the best classics in the genre of physics popularizations, needed a revision to continue its role of introducing the modern knowledge of fundamental physics to laypersons.
Russell Stannard, an able popularizer of science, courageously tackled this difficult problem of modernizing "Mr Tompkins." Four chapters out of 17 are entirely new. Old chapters describe the theory of relativity, quantum physics and atomic and nuclear physics through Mr Tompkins' adventurous dreams and a series of lectures given by "the professor" to the lay-audience. Tompkins is among the listeners of the lectures, gets acquainted with the professor's daughter Maud, and . . . Maud's look, hairstyle and dresses in illustrations and the episode of romance have also been modernized. The new chapters treat black holes, a high-energy accelerator ("atom smasher") and the results of physics gotten by it, quarks and the Standard Model, and the relation between the life of the Universe and particle physics.
Even the old chapters have been rewritten considerably. For example, Chapter 2 newly tells about an experimental evidence by neutral pion decay for the constancy of light speed, demonstration of relativistic time dilation at CERN by the change of life time of muons traveling at high speed, etc. The "twin paradox" of relativity has also been added in Chapter 2, and its further explanation is given in Chapter 3 (here is a minor but confusing error of "she" and "he" wrongly interchanged). I like this addition very much, because the "paradox" bothered me even after I had learned the theory of relativity at a university. (For a more complete explanation of the twin paradox, I recommend Max Born's "Einstein's Theory of Relativity" to readers of an inquiring mind.)
Being one of old Japanese fans of Tompkins, I feel a little sorry that the name of Hideki Yukawa has disappeared from the present version. Surely, his meson theory of nuclear forces became outdated, because constituents of nucleons and mesons, i.e., quarks and gluons, had been discovered. However, Yukawa's theory was a strong driving force for the birth of particle physics, and a good place where his name can be mentioned remains in Chapter 13 (in the original version it appeared in a later chapter, which has been omitted in the present version).
I highly recommend this book especially to young people who wish to major in physical sciences. There are a small number of simple equations of relativity and formulas of particle reactions. For those who are eager to learn about mysteries of the micro world and the universe, however, the presence of these would not be any hindrance to the enjoyment of the book but rather be an attractive feature. Some of old fans of Tompkins would also read the new version to welcome Stannard's good job.

Good Book but Needs an Index & Bibliography
By W. Watson
This was an enjoyable book, but it would profit by an index and bibliography. I keep wanting to refer to material read earlier, and foundd it difficult to find. I finally used the glosary as the basis of an index. When I thought there was a term in the book that might also be in the glossary, I wrote the page number down in the glossary. It'll be useful when I return to the book, which I'm sure I will. I can understand why they didn't provide a bibliography, but even a one pager would help. It only needed to be topic driven and not historically driven. Don't need a chronicle of events. I'm sure they didn't want to add to the expense or turn the book into something of an academic book.
Much of the material in the first few chapters is available in books like Epstein's Relativity Visualized, which I highly recommend. I really like the last three chapters, which were added to the book. The chapters on how particle accelerators work and on elementary particles were very good. The later was a very insightful treatment on how the particles got their properties. Very well done. Also liked the chapter on space curvature. A reference might be good here on non-euclidean geometry, or naybe a reference to Abbott's Flatland or Ian Stewart's Flatterland, although they aren't on non-euclidean geometry.
The introduction of fictional characters in the Tompkins book is quite useful and helpful. It somehow makes the facts more appealing. That alone perhaps encouraged me to read it from cover to cover. It softened the material at appropriate times rather than keep it on a hard track.
The book had some trouble with the Andromeda Galaxy. In two places it had the distance wrong and in disagreement with one another. 800K ly (circa 1950s value) and 1M ly (not sure where that came from). I believe the accepted value is 2M ly. In one place it called the galaxy The Great Andromeda Nebula. It's not a nebula.

The stories and images will stick with any child for a lifetime.
By Tom Brody
THE NEW WORLD OF MR. TOMPKINS by George Gamow, and revised by Russell Stannard, is 258 pages long and is printed on off-white paper. There is a ten page glossary defining words such as "momentum" and "quark." There are 45 ink drawings, many of which feature Mr. Tompkins, his fiancée Maud, and Maud's father a physics professor. For example, one of the drawings teaches relativity by disclosing a bicycle rider cycling near the speed of light, and flattened because of this high speed (in a town where the speed of light is about 25 miles per hour). Another drawing shows a small closed universe (and a smaller planet), where you can toss a book into outer space, and where the book will return from the other side of the planet after a few hours.

Generally, the layout takes the following form. One chapter will contain a lecture by the professor. While the next chapter will contain Mr. Tompkin's dream, where he is in a fantastic land where the theory from the lecture is demonstrated. For example, in an early chapter, we find Mr. Tompkins in a land where the speed of light is only 25 miles per hour, and where bicycle riders appear to be flattened, when viewed by bystanders on the sidewalk. In another chapter, we find Maud and the professor inside a glass of a beverage, watching molecules of water whiz by, bumping into microscopic chunks of barley, and admiring the orderly array of water molecules in a nearby ice cube. This particular chapter illustrates Maxwell's Demon, and teaches the second law of thermodynamics. Maxwell's Demon can best be explained, or supplemented, by a Maxwell's Demon computer game that is easily accessed for free on the internet. It consists of fast-moving red dots and slow-moving blue dots, distributed evenly inside a rectangular box. The operator (your child) can operate a gate that separates the two halves of the box, eventually resulting in all the fast dots being located in one side, and the slow dots in the other side.

The book is best read to children by an adult who has taken college physics and is able to explain the stories. Now, if only there could be another Mr. Tompkins storybook that illustrates Newtonian physics. FIVE STARS.

An Environmental History of Latin America (New Approaches to the Americas), by Shawn William Miller

This book narrates the mutually mortal historical contest between humans and nature in Latin America. Covering a period that begins with Amerindian civilizations and concludes in the region's present urban agglomerations, the work offers an original synthesis of the current scholarship on Latin America's environmental history and argues that tropical nature played a central role in shaping the region's historical development. Seeing Latin America's environmental past from the perspective of many centuries illustrates that human civilizations, ancient and modern, have been simultaneously more powerful and more vulnerable than previously thought.

Review
"For years to come, studies of Latin American environmental history will have to begin with references to Shawn Miller's book." - Alfred W. Crosby, Professor Emeritus of American Studies, History, and Geography, University of Texas at Austin

"Sailing over the last six centuries in just over two hundred pages, Shawn Miller presents readers with a magnificent panorama of the turbulent environmental history of Latin America. Specialists, students, and general readers will all find Miller's pages intellectually intriguing and often entertaining. A delightful book and an important story." - J. R. McNeill, Georgetown University, author of Something New Under the Sun

"Shawn Miller has done us a great favor. He has synthesized the Latin American environmental history literature from the past fifteen years, without leaving earlier works behind, to produce the first general text of its kind. [...] It should find an audience in any classroom tackling the topic. [...] One book cannot cover everything, although this one almost does." - Myrna I. Santiago, Saint Mary's College of California, The Americas

"Shawn William Miller has written a terrific short introduction to the environmental history of Latin America. Engagingly written, carefully researched and just 257 pages long, An Environmental History of Latin America will long be read by anyone interested in environmental studies and the history and anthropology of the lands south of the Rio Grande.... Miller has done a remarkable job of introducing and summarizing a vast number of themes and ideas-the literary equivalent of packing two quarts in a one-quart bottle." - Journal of Latin American Geography

"...An Environmental History of Latin America offers a basic text for undergraduate teaching that is both informative and conversational. Even when Miller veers into speculative arguments, his book provides excellent material for class discussions to engage students and inform their awareness of environmental processes and issues throughout the Americas." - Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History

"A one volume survey, such as Miller's lucid and provocative book, has long been needed." - Richard P. Tucker, The Journal of Interdisciplinary History

"Engagingly written..." - Cynthia Radding, Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History

"Shawn Miller's highly readable and useful survey joins other eminent textbooks published in the series, such as Herbert Klein's on slavery and Susan Socolow's on gender.... Miller's accomplishment is that he corrects surprisingly common misconceptions, many of which still trouble environmentalists, students, and even senior scholars. Insightful revelations abound about pre-Columbian, colonial, and modern Latin American agriculture, beliefs, and urban history." - World History Bulletin

"Miller addresses the key relationship between Latin American environmental history and political and social theory. In doing so, he also contributes in vital ways to the establishment of environmental history as an essential field of knowledge. In fact, Miller's work and the field of environmental history have a lot to offer a variety of disciplines." - Canadian Journal of Latin American & Caribbean Studies

"...exciting and impressive..." -Kieko Matteson, Pacific Circle

About the Author

an indispensable introduction to the topic
By hmf22
An Environmental History of Latin America is a short, vigorous, engaging introduction to the story of human beings' endeavor, before and after European contact, to survive and thrive in a region that Miller dubs the "Neotropics." Miller ranges widely in time and space, exploring topics as diverse as Mesoamerican farming on chinampas and bicycle commuting in contemporary South America. He is particularly illuminating on the size and complexity of pre-contact Native American civilizations and the puzzling question of how early European explorers overlooked them. The prose is strong and though Miller's tone is occasionally more personal than one expects in an academic work, the effect is engaging, not jarring. All in all, this is a great book, accessible and interesting even to readers who are not experts on Latin America.

Excellent introduction if you're largely ignorant!
By Rebecca Emmons
This book is excellent. Eminently readable, it moves swiftly but provides impressive depth regarding the topics selected. Those desiring to study in greater depth will be pleased with the lists for further reading, provided in the back. Miller explains the roots of current environmental problems, punctures popular current myths about the ecological past of native peoples, and shows that the survival of civilization has always involved trade-offs, whether in human or environmental terms. Miller is also adept at explaining cultural differences in perception, so that I was easily able to understand the differences. I checked this book out from the library, but I will certainly be buying this for my own shelves. In sum, this is a quick and easy read, but certainly not a light-weight.

Save California's farms, forests and dams
By Cheryl Sigona &
I recommend this book for everyone involved with environmental or energy issues in the Americas. In my eyes, the quality of human life depends on the health of the whole biosphere. This book covers Latin America at contact with Europe to current day concerns for the monarch butterfly. Tupi, Aztec and Inca cultures altered the natural environment for subsistence and prestige goods. Miller uses Archaeology, Historical documents, Biology and Geography to keep one absorbed in the flow of reading. Miller writes about the complexities of culture and nature interactions, and the destruction both can cause the other. California's Central Valley has prime agricultural land, but housing and water diversion projects threaten this provider of food. Miller's book is a comprehensive survey of the battle between conspicuous consumption and environmental justice. I have a Bachelor degree in Biology, from the 1970s, and this book entices me to study further in Environmental History.

Posidonius: Volume 3, The Translation of the Fragments (Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries) (Vol 3), by Posidonius

This book translates the surviving evidence for one of the most important intellectual figures of the Graeco-Roman world, whose interests spread widely over philosophy, history and the sciences. The translations are accompanied by contextual introductions and explanatory notes, and a general introduction assesses the importance of Posidonius and his contribution. The order of fragments follows exactly that of the ancient texts collected and edited by L. Edelstein and I. G. Kidd in Posidonius Vol. 1 and completes (with Vol. 2 The Commentary) what has become the definitive modern edition.

Review
"...an enjoyable read in themselves, as they open up a panoply of thought and give us amazing insight into the philosophical milieu of the Augustan and later ages." W. G. Sayles, The Celator

"The success of this project cannot be overstated. It has transformed the study of Posidonius and later ancient thought in a decisive manner, especially in the English-speaking world." Brad Inwood, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"It wiil be a welcome and valuable reference for those investigating many aspects of ancient thought, especially for those interested in the history of science, historiography, and philosophy." Arthur Marmorstein, Religious Studies Review

"Kidd, academia's preeminent authority on Posidonius, advances his reputation still further with this translation...The introduction alone makes the book worth owning, but this volume delivers much more...The translation is a valuable tool to anyone interested in Posidonius, Stoicism, and the intellectual life of the first century.

The definitive reconstruction, translation and commentary on the work of this important Stoic. Specialists will of course want volumes 1 and 2 as well, but for the rest of us, volume 3 is just fine standing alone.

Racism, Misogyny, and the Othello Myth: Inter-racial Couples from Shakespeare to Spike Lee, by Celia R. Daileader

Through research spanning four centuries, in genres as diverse as English Renaissance drama, abolitionist literature, gothic horror and contemporary romance, Celia Daileader questions why Anglo-American culture's most widely-read canonical narratives of inter-racial sex feature a black male and a white female. This study considers the cultural obsession with Shakespeare's Othello, alongside the more pertinent issue of white male sexual predation upon black females. Daileader argues that myths about black male sexual rapacity and the danger of racial "pollution" were exploited to "protect" white female sexuality and exorcise collective guilt.

Daileader rocks
By Gary Taylor
This book is a beautifully written analysis of the way entrenched prejudice against blacks is connected to entrenched prejudice against women. Daileader is Professor of English at Florida State University. (I've taken her classes, she's a brilliant teacher.) In addition to this book, she is author of "Eroticism on the Renaissance Stage" (Cambridge UP), co-editor of John Fletcher's "The Tamer Tamed" (Revels Plays, 2006), and co-editor of a new book that isn't out yet, "Women and Others: Perspectives on Race, Gender, and Empire" (Palgrave, 2007). Read them all!

Dancing with Strangers: Europeans and Australians at First Contact, by Inga Clendinnen

In January 1788, the First Fleet arrived in New South Wales, Australia and a thousand British men and women encountered the people who would be their new neighbors. Dancing with Strangers tells the story of what happened between the first British settlers of Australia and these Aborigines. Inga Clendinnen interprets the earliest written sources, and the reports, letters and journals of the first British settlers in Australia. She reconstructs the difficult path to friendship and conciliation pursued by Arthur Phillip and the local leader 'Bennelong' (Baneelon) that was ultimately destroyed by the assertion of profound cultural differences. A Prize-winning archaeologist, anthropologist and historian of ancient Mexican cultures, Inga Clendinnen has spent most of her teaching career at La Trobe University in Bundoora, Australia. Ambivalent Conquests: Maya and Spaniard in Yucatan (Cambridge, 1989) and Aztecs: An Interpretation (Cambridge, 1995) are two of her best-known scholarly works; Tiger's Eye: A Memoir, (Scribner, 2001) describes her battle against liver cancer. Reading the Holocaust (Cambridge, 2002) explores World War II genocide from various perspectives.

Review
"Clendinnen wrtes so well, with an eye for detail and character that maker her a pleasure to read." The New York Times Book Review

“It is not often that a nonspecialist writing outside her usual area of study does as well as Clendinnen does here. Clendinnen writes understandably for anyone interested in early Australian history. ”

"In this book Inga Clendinnen breathes new life into early contact between indigenous and incoming peoples in Sydney, Australia, during the late eighteenth century...This book is a wonderful rollercoaster ride through the highs and lows of cross-cultural contact, and is highly recommended." - American Historical Review, Fiona Paisley, Griffith University

"Clendinnen writes in such an engaging, lively, and moving way and with real anthropological insight that the general reader interested in the human condition and relations between races will find her book a stimulating read." - Stefan Petrow, University of Tasmania

"A beautifully written account of cross-cultural relations...a valuable contribution both to ways of understanding colonial pasts and ongoing efforts to pursue reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples today"
Anne Keary, Canadian Journal of History

`People always look most alike when we know them least'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
This is a thoughtful, insightful look at the initial contacts between Australia's indigenous people and members of the First Fleet in 1788. There is an intense curiosity, both within this book and in the snippets of evidence from the primary documents Ms Clendinnen refers to, about the meanings of the human interactions observed. Reading through the snippets from Watkin Tench, David Collins, William Bradley and others offers insights into the impacts of foreign cultures on each other.

`Our first shared Australian story is a tragedy of animated imagination, determined friendship and painfully dying hopes.'

One of the tragedies is in the way we view history. Written records, with their framework of events and theories of causation speak for themselves in ways that oral traditions, especially by those dispossessed, often cannot.

At the end of her book, Ms Clendinnen writes: `Here in this place, I think, we are all Australians now.' I am not sure that we are there yet, but there is renewed hope that we can be.

This book is well worth reading for its insights into those initial contacts.

Excellent history !
By Rebecca Lindroos
Inga Clendinnen, one of Australia's most influential historians has written a gripping account of the relationship between the members of the First Fleet and the local "Australians" (as Clendinnen calls the aborigines). She uses the old reports and journals of the crew as source material. The result is a surprising peek at what really went on in those first 5 years, how Governor Arthur Phillip worked to establish friendly contacts, the clash of cultures so different from each other, and what happened to his efforts. Clendinnon is not as academic as she has been with prior works, but neither is this a beach read. It's a serious history book of real merit which also happens to be very well written.

Dancing between black and white Australia
By tsak
This book is not only about the encounters between the British and the first Australians in the 18th century (told through the eyes of journal keepers from the time), it is also a more general tale about how humans navigate cultures and the delights and sharing as well as misunderstandings and violence go along with it.

I loved this book from the moment I read Inga's narration of Captain John Hunter's description of dancing by Baneelon and Colbee who staged a corroborree for their English visitors: "placing their feet very wide apart and, by an extraordinary exertion of the muscles and thighs, moving their knees in a trembling and very surprising manner', to which he added "which none of us could imitate" and suddenly we know that at some stage of the evening Hunter and the other Englishmen were on their feet and in the ring, furiously wobbling their knees."

A great introduction to 'contact' period in Australian history, and some of the key figures of the time, both British and Aboriginal.
