Excellent book for biologists/ecologists interested in bayesian statistics.

The authors of this book give an excellent overview with examples of Bayesian statistics from an ecologists' point of view. They assume that you have no experience in Bayesian stats but have a basic background in regular "frequentist" statistics (i.e. hypothesis testing, t-tests, anova, etc). Its really well written and the examples are very valuable in learning the program OpenBUGS and in understanding the concepts. I would recommend for anyone interested in learning about Bayesian statstics, from a general interest to someone using them in the phd dissertation.

Good BUGS cookbook

I recently used this book for a class, and found it a good introduction for those already well familiar with classical frequentist techniques in ecology. It provides good cookbook recipes for doing an ANOVA, regression, etc with BUGS. The first chapter also cites some good reasons as to WHY one should use Bayes when they have prior information over other techniques. This was NOT however, a book that was particularly useful for those who want a thorough introduction to Bayes, warts and all, as well as giving one a real thorough understanding of Hierarchical modeling, which is arguably where Bayes can see it's best applications, particularly in ecology. The class as a whole felt like the book needs more thorough examples, more explanations of the WHYs, as well as the potential pitfalls, how to find problems with your models, as well as some applied problem sets. We also used Gelman and Hill's book, which has been excellent as a more thorough introduction, even if it is in the social sciences, and I have high hopes for James Clark's new book, although I have not seen a copy yet.

This book is a great little book for learning some code for programming in WinBUGS. I used it to supplement a course in Bayesian Data Analysis.

About the Author
Alexandra Zimmermann is Manager of Chester Zoo's Conservation Department (UK) and DPhil student at Oxford University. Her main research interest is in human-wildlife conflicts and she has founded and managed community-based conflict management programmes for jaguars in Brazil (with WCS) and Asian elephants in Assam, India.

Matthew Hatchwell has worked for the Wildlife Conservation Society since 1986, in New York, the Republic of Congo, Madagascar, and now in the United Kingdom as the WCS European Coordinator. In Madagascar, he was instrumental in the creation of Masoala National Park and in developing the relationship between the national park and Zoo Zürich.

Lesley Dickie is the Zoo Conservation Officer of the Zoological Society of London and is developing new auditing processes to fully collate the conservation activities of the Living Collections with respect to the mission of the ZSL. Her main research and conservation interests are in the biodiversity of Madagascar, with particular regard to the conservation role of European zoos on the island.

Chris West is CEO of the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia and Professor of Zoology, Adelaide University. Previously Zoological Director at ZSL, his interests range from good management practice for the conservation impact of zoos, sound ethical frameworks and welfare standards, as well as conservation medicine, and political leadership to link conservation with human and sustainable environmental development, the last being explored locally in Australia.

An excellent text for up-coming Zoo Curators

This is a well-bound and well priced hardback. The print house and publishers have kept the price of the book to a manageable level by keeping it below A4 size and the print quality has been maintained without the need for a magnifier to read. Excellent for the non-biology expert

I came across this book searching for good introductory texts to be used as companions in a bioinformatics course intended for an audience of graduate students in computer science at the University of Chicago. This is definitely an outstanding text for this purpose. It's genetic engineering in a nutshell. Each chapter is summarized at its end by a "concept-diagram" that connects all the essential information in that chapter (I wish other authors could do the same with their books). The book is divided in eight chapters, spanning over 165 pages approximately. It covers basic molecular biology (gene organization, expression), manipulation of nucleic acids (labelling, hybridisation, electrophoresis, and sequencing), restriction, modifying, and joining enzymes, vector techniques, cloning, recombinants, and applied issues (making proteins, transgenics, etc).

This is a great book for college students. Probably the best textbook of genetic engineering I've ever read ! I'm already a graduate student majored in plant science, but I still find this book quite useful in giving me an general and clear conception about genetic engineering. My favorite part is the concept maps at the end of each chapter !!

A brief overview of gene technology

First off, I would have given this book 5 stars if value was the main consideration. You can't beat the price for what you are getting with this work. It provides a very concise overview of modern gene technology, though that conciseness is the underlying drawback of this text. Another thing I didn't like about this text is that that everything is in black and white. With today's printing capabilities, B/W is sub-standard. Although, I must express that even with the limited resources put into the printing, the diagrams are well thought out and the graphical explanations are very well delivered considering there is no color to work with. As mentioned above, for a compact text that weighs next to nothing compared to a full text-book you can't argue against its value.
This book is divided into three parts. Part I covers the basic gene technology principles. Part II deals with the methods of rDNA technologies. And Part III discusses some applications of rDNA with some minor references to non-rDNA biotechnologies for comparison purposes. Part I and Part II seem somewhat dry, especially with the terseness involved with cramming the whole subject into such a small book. It takes a lot of interest in the subject to keep the attention span. It also is a bit difficult to follow at times and re-reading parts and perhaps referencing external texts may be necessary to obtain a good comprehension of the material at hand. One fantastic feature is that the author provides a "summary chart" at the end of each chapter. The educational impact of this technique is remarkable and I wish this was used more in many other texts. Part III is where the juicy material is covered. After all the foundation is laid, Part III makes for easy reading and brings to light the knowledge you gain from the former parts. It gives a brief overview of some of the different applications of gene technology as well as discusses societal impact and influence (perhaps the major determinant of the fate of biotechnology).
Readers of this book should have some background knowledge of genetics or molecular biology. That would help overcome the terseness of the presentation material. Overall, this book provides a decent academic overview of the subject without the sidetracking toward the many examples and specific details contained in full texts.

Not a lawyer found the writing somewhat turgid and slow; on the other hand our decision making and valuation of life and risk is certainly not epistimic. Read just before the Black Swan which discusses risk from a different angle. For those involoved in lives with risks this is interesting reading

About the Author
Charles M. (Mel) Gray is Professor of Business Economics in the Opus College of Business, University of St Thomas, where he has been teaching economics, strategy and nonprofit management to undergraduate and MBA students for more than 30 years. Previously he was a staff economist at the Federal Reserve Banks of St Louis and Minneapolis and for a Minnesota state agency, and he served as executive director of a community development agency. He has been a visiting or adjunct faculty member at Macalester College and the Universities of Oslo, North Carolina, Minnesota, British Columbia and Rochester. He received his BA in Social Science and Mathematics from Hendrix College and his AM and Ph.D. in Economics from Washington University. His primary research interests are the nonprofit and creative sectors, principally the nonprofit arts. He has authored or edited three books, and his publications include numerous articles and book chapters. He currently serves as editor of Nonprofit Management and Leadership, a leading research journal for the nonprofit sector. He has been a consultant to the US Department of Justice, the National Endowment for the Arts, the District of Columbia, several Minnesota state agencies and numerous companies, nonprofit organizations and trade associations.

Still the best on the subject -- but now very dated

The most comprehensive text that's out there, but it's quite old now. I'm no longer requiring my students to buy it; I just put it on reserve at the library. Some of the tables can be updated using publicly available data, but updating the discussions requires more work. For example, there is very little mention of the Internet, and very little discussion of the growing integration of the for-profit and nonprofit arts sectors.

Essential for understanding the organised crime phenomenon

Organised crime in its many forms is one of the most important features of the late20th/early21st century world. Its extent, power, and impact increase year by year. In several parts of the world the distinction between organised criminals and the state means almost nothing. There is also an intimate connection between organised criminality on the one hand and both state intelligence services and terrorist organisations on the other. What is seldom realised is how new this is. The criminal gang is probably as old as civilisation but before the twentieth century that was as far as criminal organisation went. Now it has moved up several levels and crime is now organised as a business, on a transnational scale. It has, to adapt Peter Drucker, been "institutionalised". This book explains why this has happened. It is because of a change in the incentives facing criminals. To simplify the argument, historically the transactions costs of ensuring and enforcing cooperation among criminals have been too high to make it worthwhile. Criminals have also faced the problem that the short term incentive to betray their fellows has trumped the longer term incentive to cooperate with other criminals. This has been changed by a number of factors - communications and transport technology being significant - but as the book shows by far the most significant is government policy. Specifically, the policy of prohibiting the sale and manufacture of a number of "products" for which there is high demand such as arms, pornography, prostitution, gambling, and, above all, drugs. This changes the incentives and makes the pay off for cooperating so great that organised crime is the inevitable outcome. The essays make other points as well, notably the close similarities between organised criminal groups and governments/ruling classes (as St Augustine said, "All governments are in origin bands of robbers"). Some of the essays are quite technical and would be most useful to someone with an economics background but there is enough to make this book very informative for the layman as well. Truly an eye-opener. Now why do I think no one in Congress has read this book?

Excellent and Fascinating

I first encountered this book in a class called -- wait for it ---the Economics of Organized crime. I was fascinated. The book explains the workings of the Sicilian and New York Mafia as well as Asian Tongs and the drug trade. The chapter by Gambetta is especially interesting. The book does get a bit technical in places with formulas and such, but one can skip over that for the more general view of how organized crime and government are similar in their operations. This work gave me a lot of insight into the role that crime plays in our social and economic structures. This is also a nice introduction to Transaction Cost Economics, which is rather new in the field of Econ. I would only add that some background in Macroeconomics is useful for a fuller understanding of the book.

About the Author
Brian H. Bix is the Frederick W. Thomas Professor of Law and Philosophy at the University of Minnesota. Prior to teaching at the University of Minnesota, Professor Bix had full-time appointments at King's College London and Quinnipiac Law School and has had visiting positions at Georgetown University Law Center, George Washington Law School, the University of Haifa and the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya. He is a member of the American Law Institute and a reporter for the Uniform Law Commission. He has published widely in contract law, jurisprudence and family law. He has written, edited or co-edited 14 books and more than 100 articles. Bix's work has been translated into seven languages and he has given invited lectures in countries all over the world.

These are the in-class summaries Bix gives to his first-year contracts class, compiled and elaborated upon. It's structured to mirror class, which is based off the casebook Knapp, Crystal & Prince, Problems in Contract Law (7th ed., 2012)

Highly recommended for any 1L looking for a comprehensive review of Contracts that you can manage during the reading period leaving up to your final exam. Even the minority rules worth knowing are indicated.

Bix At His Best

Brian Bix is unusual: he writes at a high level of legal and philosophical sophistication AND he writes clearly. I will recommend this text for next year's Contracts students, and I plan to use it to launch an article on pluralism in contract theory.

Fact-filled introduction to how microbes affect our lives

This is a companion volume to the undergraduate text Introductory Microbiology. The emphasis here is on what microbes can do presented in a relatively nontechnical fashion so that the material is accessible to an educated readership and not just to bio meds. The material is organized in eight chapters from "The microbiology of soil and of nutrient cycling" through "Food microbiology" (an especially easy and interesting chapter) to "Chemotherapy and antibiotic resistance." The longest and most densely-packed chapter is "7 Microbial infections." The sub-headings in the chapters are in the form of questions, such as "5.5.1 How do microbes cause food spoilage?" or "7.8 What causes infections of skin, bone and soft tissues?" This format seems to encourage communication from the authors to the general reader and improves the readability of the text. There is a glossary of bold-faced terms and an index.
I picked this up because I felt a need for a more fundamental and broad introduction to microbiology than I would get from a popular volume, yet I didn't want to read a textbook. Microbiology in Action turns out to be a perfect fit to what I need. There is of course a United Kingdom flavor to the language and some of the examples since the authors are from the University of Leeds and the book is published by the Cambridge University Press, but that is entirely tolerable.
What makes this an excellent book is the wealth of information it contains. I learned about how microbes are used in mining and in the oil industry, how microbes ferment and preserve food, how recombinant DNA technology allows us to use microbes to produce pharmaceutical products such as insulin, interferons, hormones and antibiotics. I was delighted with some of the peripheral information. I learned, for example, how some people managed to have ice cream in the summer time before the age of refrigeration. Some big estates built icehouses to store perishable foodstuffs. "These are large structures, often built underground for extra insulation. Ice from local rivers and the estate lake was collected during the winter months and stored in the icehouse. Because of the size of the ice stock and the insulation of the structure, the ice gathered one year would last through the summer and into the next winter. This provided ice for summer desserts" (p. 90). I also learned that there are typically about one hundred million to one billion bacteria per gram dry weight of soil (p. 5) and that the number of cells of, in, and on the human body is around ten to the fourteenth, 90% of which are not of human origin (p. 119).
It is now common knowledge that we are products of the microbial world and could not exist without it. Microbes conditioned, and are conditioning, the planet so that so-called higher forms of life might exist. Still the vast majority of life on this planet is microbial, and that is a compelling reason for us to be more informed about microbes. Reading Microbiology in Action is an excellent way to begin.
