About the Author
Dr. Michael Nielsen was born in Brisbane, Australia in 1974, and was educated at the University of Queensland, obtaining postgraduate degrees in mathematics and physics, before being awarded his PhD in physics at the University of New Mexico in 1998. He is currently the Tolman Postdoctoral Fellow and a Fulbright Scholar at the California Institute of Technology

Dr. Isaac Chuang is a native of Louisville, KY. He received his doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1997, where he was a Hertz Foundation Fellow, and holds two bachelors degrees and one masters degree in physics and electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He serves as a consulting professor at Stanford University. He joined IBM Research in 1998. In November 1999 he was named one of the top 100 young innovators of 1999.

A book that repays study

My first acquaintance with this book came from a copy which I ordered through interlibrary loan after seeing favorable comments on the internet. The loan period was only two weeks, so I wasn't able to study this 600-page book in detail. But I learned quite a bit just by skimming it. After I saw that it was a book that would repay study, I purchased it.

The first chapter of 58 pages nicely introduces many of the important ideas, leaving the more difficult details to later chapters. For example, I learned about quantum teleportation, which I had never understood from popular accounts.

I read it from cover to cover and was able to follow almost all of it in detail. Since I read it as someone learning this material for the first time, I'll review it from a student's perspective. A much longer review discussing technical issues is available on my web site.

Chapter 2 gives a nice summary of basic quantum mechanics. It includes an introduction to necessary concepts from abstract linear algebra, including important specific applications (e.g., the Schmidt decomposition) which are not likely to be covered even in advanced linear algebra courses.

The third chapter gives an introduction to computer science concepts.
This gives a conceptual framework within which to present the ideas of quantum computation. More material is included here than is necessary to understand the rest of the book. Readers may find it efficient to skim this chapter initially and return for more detail when necessary.

The next three chapters present the essentials of quantum circuits, the quantum Fourier transform, and quantum search algorithms. Here there is perhaps room for a little improvement. I thought that important details were sometimes omitted from the exposition, and I occasionally had to go to the original literature to understand the ideas.

Also, there is a bad misuse of the "Big-O" notation throughout these
chapters, startling in a book so generally carefully written. Sophisticated readers will take this in stride, but it might demoralize beginners. For details, see the longer review on my web site.

The mathematics of quantum computation is easy compared to the problems of physically realizing it. Chapter 7 gives an extensive discussion of these problems and various proposals for overcoming them. This concludes the "quantum computation" section of the book, which is a little more than half of the 600-odd pages.

The rest deals with quantum information theory. This is presented in less detail than the quantum computation chapters, and demands more from the reader. A summary of classical information theory is included, with sketches of proofs of important results. I found this very helpful in refreshing my memory of Khinchin's book on information theory, which I read decades ago.

Some of the more complicated proofs are only sketched. I didn't get as much from the quantum information section of the book as from the quantum computation section. I think it gives a useful overview of the field, but if I wanted to learn quantum information in detail, I would look for a book dedicated to this topic, perhaps reading Nielsen/Chuang first as an introduction.

The book concludes with a 12-page introduction to quantum cryptography.
I couldn't follow this section in detail. Perhaps it could be followed with enough work, but I wasn't motivated. I imagine that a proper treatment of cryptography would require many more than 12 pages. Again, if I wanted to learn this material, I would seek an expository text dedicated to it.

In summary, this is an exceptionally fine text which can be read on many levels. The 58-page overview of quantum computation should be comprehensible to anyone familiar with the basic ideas of quantum mechanics. The rest of the book may possibly be readable with great effort by well-prepared undergraduates, but I think a graduate-level
background in quantum mechanics and linear algebra would be more realistic prerequisites, and also more efficient. These prerequites will have to be mastered anyway for anyone who wants to work in a field dependent on quantum theory. Those who lack the prerequisites may still be able to get a feel for the problems of quantum computation and information from the book, even if the details seem too difficult.

Although this is a serious book suitable for obtaining a professional knowledge of its subjects, it is unusually carefully written in an expository style. There are many exercises interspersed with the exposition, but no solutions are provided. Most of them should be solvable on sight by anyone following the presentation, so they provide
a useful check on one's understanding of the material. (I am a professional mathematician; students may find the exercises less easy.)

Each chapter ends with "History and further reading'' sections, often extensive. I found these very helpful.

Excellent for startup on QC

I'm an undergraduate student in Computer Science, doing my Diploma (BS/MS) thesis on Quantum Computing and Algorithms. If you are computer scientist, mathematician or physicist and you want some startup information, this is the book you are looking for. Although, the book doesn't assume that you have appropriate background on mathematics or computer science, it will be good that you have some affiliation with linear algebra, tensor calculus and basic computational complexity concepts. The book is excellent for self study and research, containing many exercises. Another more mathematical book is Classical and Quantum Computing (AMS) by Kitaev, Shen and Vyalyi. It cannot complement the first book but it will give you precise mathematical approach on computational complexity-classical computing (first 50 pages), which is needed to continue and understand concepts of quantum complexity classes and quantum algorithms.

It is a book for specialists. In order to fully appreciate the contents you should have a physics, maths or computation science diploma. It contains a good introduction on Quantum mechanics, but for people that have already assited an introductory course on the field. Concerning the main subject: quantum computation, this book is the most complete review of the field and also suitable for a course on QC.

a very valuable book, entertaining too

For a graduate student who has not had an observational astronomy course, the process of self-teaching the essentials of CCD astronomy is not a smooth one. You really don't know what kind of things you have to worry about before going to a telescope!

Though this book does not cover comprehensively the topic of detection techniques in scientific contexts (too much for such a small book), it has an excellent, totally readable introduction to the basics of CCD detection in astronomy. The author obviously has been in the field for a long time, so his numerous anecdotes from his rich, past expericnes are entertaining as well as enlightening. It is such a short book but very satisfying, which is rare for a technical science book.

This book would make a perfect textbook or supplement reading for any decent undergraduate observational astronomy course. Highly recommended as the first reading for observers.

A much-needed comprehensive study of regional integration.

Mattli provides a thorough and careful study of regional integration in which he takes all previous theories, analyses them and synthesizes them into his own 'demand and supply' theory. If many questions about the current 'integrationist' trend were left unanswered, or poorly explained, by previous theories, both in economics and political-science; Mattli does a splendid job at explaining integration and its modus operandi. By looking at why many attempts at integration have failed and very few succeeded, and by looking at why and when 'outsider' countries attempt to become 'insiders', Mattli develops his demand-and-supply-side-conditions analysis of regional integration. His specialist knowledge of the current European integration (and previous historical attempts) is showcased in Chapter 4. This book provides a new, rich and logical framework for further studies on regional integration.

Convincent interpretation of regionalism

The book of Mattli is a very convincent work in regional integration studies. His arguments is not based in a (traditional)economic approach where integration is viewed only for eliminating borders barriers.

Inside political science Mattli think in terms of the role of the regional leader, the external forces of economics and demands for regional rules as the driving forces of regionalism.

Chapter 2 and 3 are the best parts of the book, and i use these chapters in my courses of regional integration, in international relations area.

About as good as you can do

Any 'dictionary' like this is only as good as its contributors, and for the most part, the contributors to The Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy are well enough versed in their field to be able to give clear, concise synopses of the topics addressed. That's not to say that the dictionary does not have its more obtuse passages, where--either because the material is simply not able to be made more digestible or because the writer is unable to make it so--things get dense, and the purpose of a dictionary like this--to make a thinker or idea quickly accessible to the novice who has stumbled upon them (usually in some tangential capacity) in their own work--is thwarted. Unfortunately (for someone like me who works in modern theology), the time-period most commonly left complicated by this dictionary is modernity. If you're interested in post-Cartesian philosophy, it might be worth checking out a few other options. But if you're confident in your reading and abstract thinking abilities, this is an otherwise fine, mostly comprehensive work.

Philio-Reference for a non-philosopher

I lack training in philosophy but often read nonfiction criticism that requires a bit of philosophical background. This book provides that background without sending my tired eyes to the much longer entries in the eight volume _Encyclopedia of Philosophy_. From the Dictionary's depth and breadth of concise entries, with references to related and equally concise entires, I can usually learn enough to answer my immediate question. The entries also point me to where I should dig if I want deeper background. This Dictionary now permanently resides beside my reading chair.

Good book, but it is still a book.

A very nice reference book. Seems very complete, everything I tried to lookup I found. Well written, although I found some of it hard to read (over my head perhaps).

That said, it is a good book, but it is still a book, and I have found through comparison that what is on the internet matches this topic for topic. That may not be true for all subjects but it certainly is for Philosophy. Wikipedia is one of the best examples of what the web has to offer. The web is dynamic, it grows and changes at the same pace as our knowledge and understanding changes, books can't do that. Also on the web for each subject there were many many views (which is both good and bad) and in some cases the only way I was able to understand some of the very complex ideals and Philosophy's I was interested in was by taking in all the different views (from simple to complex) until it clicked.

If you consider books as the standard of excellence for conveying human knowledge, then this would seem a good one to have. For my self, I think in the future I will stick with the web for all "Reference" type subjects.

Frost as one of the all-time greats

If you agree that Robert Frost was one of the greatest poets in English literary history, and enormously erudite if "elusively complex," then you will love this book unreservedly. I think of Frost more as a melodist, perhaps because I sang Randall Thompson's Frostiana in a chorus shortly after its composition, and because I generally find Frost's poetry more musical than scholarly. Still, there's lots of excellent stuff in this book. Highly recommended.

Thus far, most research on the subject of friendship has concentrated on peer acceptance, dyadic properties, and the contribution that friendship makes to development and adjustment. There has been little exploration of friendship's role in a child's social and emotional growth. The Company They Keep pioneers this area. This book provides a forum in which internationally recognized scholars active in the study of friendship present the major conceptual issues, themes, and findings from their research. The authors describe the theoretical and empirical context and the goals of their own research programs. They discuss current research and the methodological strategies adopted for studying friendship relations. A variety of topics is explored, including cultural variations in children's and adolescents' friendships, the association between friendship and cognitive and personality development, the effect of friendship on adjustment, and the links between experience within the family and relationships with friends. The authors also express their views on future directions for such research. This book will appeal to developmental psychologists, researchers, and students. Tremblay, PhD, is Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Psychology at the University of Montreal and Director of the Inter-University Research Unit on Children's Psychosocial Maladjustment. For over 20 years, he has conducted a program of longitudinal and experimental studies addressing the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children from conception onward to understand the development and prevention of antisocial behavior.
Willard W. Hartup, EdD, is Regents' Professor Emeritus and former Director of the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hartup has spent many years researching friendship and peer relations in child development, antipathies and their significance, and conflict and aggression in childhood and adolescence.
John Archer, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, United Kingdom. His research is concerned with human aggression, grief and loss, and sex differences. Dr. Archer is also the author of several books, including Sex and Gender (with Barbara Lloyd) and The Nature of Grief; numerous book chapters; and over 100 articles in refereed journals covering psychology, medicine, and biology. In recent years, he has published a number of meta-analytic reviews on topics connected with sex differences in aggression.
