About the Author
Bela Bollobas has taught at Cambridge University's Department of Pure Maths and Mathematical Statistics for over 25 years and has been a fellow of Trinity College for 30 years. Since 1996, he has held the unique Chair of Excellence in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Memphis. Bollobas has previously written over 250 research papers in extremal and probabilistic combinatorics, functional analysis, probability theory, isoperimetric inequalities and polynomials of graphs.

An Excellent Introduction

This is a very nice introduction to rings and modules. The text is well written and pedagogical, and the exercises are both informative and do-able. Beginning at a level appropriate for advanced undergraduates, this book builds up the theory of rings and modules in a concise manner without sacrificing clarity. Although not as in depth as some other texts (i.e., fewer full proofs), the reader is given enough guidance to fill in the missing proofs for herself. This, together with their other text on categories and Rosenberg's book on algebraic K-theory, gives a solid introduction to algebraic K-theory.

Accessible and easy to read

I believe this introductory textbook is a rare-bird in that it treats both non-commutative Artininan semisimple rings and commutative Dedekind domains from the view point of projective modules. I recall a similar book on ring theory by Jacob Barshay (written some thirty-seven years ago) which "falls short" in its treatment of the subject. The book by Berrick and Keating nicely covers many subjects that Barshay doesn't (important ones that come into my mind includes BINs and the fact that rings of integers of number fields form Dedekind domains.) And their writing style is quite accessible and easy to read. If you are majoring in algebra, you may have to go on to Lam's books, but otherwise this book may be sufficient most of (if not all) the time.

A readable introduction to the topic

I am not a mathematician and am studying algebra primarily out of personal curiosity. While working through Dummit and Foote, I was bogged down in the chapters on module theory and decided I needed a more introductory book on modules. I eventually found this one. The great thing about this book is, in addition to being quite accessible, the author motivates each section by explaining why the techniques are of interest. This really helps you see the forest from the trees. I am only 1/3rd of the way in, but so far, I am quite impressed.

Pippa Norris is the McGuire Lecturer in Comparative Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Challenging Conventions on the Radical Right

Pippa Norris has written a very thought provoking book on the radical right that questions much of the conventional wisdom on radical right parties. The central question of this book is why the radical right despite having a presence in many established democracies have such an uneven rate of success? To get at these answers, Norris grapples with questions that have stirred much debate such as: What makes the radical right have success?, Who votes for the radical right and what factors might motivate such a vote?

If one reads this book looking for “the answer” to radical right political parties then they are going to be sorely disappointed. The literature on radical right political parties and their electoral success or failure is vast and complex. What Norris does do is dispel many of the conventional fears such as the radical right is an absolute threat to democracy or that everyone who votes for the radical right is motivated by blatant racism. The picture painted by Norris is far more nuanced than commentaries penned by the talking heads on television.

A book that highly informed my thinking on the topic.

A must read for political Science people

I had to read this book for a class I'm taking in Comparative Politics. I absolutely loved this book. In fact I bought both the "hard" copy and a kindle copy (so I guess "Happy Royalties," Dr. Norris). Students beware... if you are just trying to get to the answer of why and how radical right parties succeed, you won't be too happy. You have to read the whole thing. Luckily, Norris has a friendly writing style. She walks the reader through her research step by step in a logical way -- I almost felt like I was an assistant working along side her. When I started reading, I was a little frustrated (knowing the question I had to answer and not finding an immediate answer), but by the end of the book, all the pieces fit nicely together. For readers wanting to learn more about the radical right, this book offers many quasi case studies to fulfill your interest. But the scholarly reader needs to keep in mind that Norris' strategic agency theory can be applied to any minor party. Happy reading... stick with it... once you get past ch. 2, it's easy sailing.

About the Author
Roger Goodman is lecturer in the social anthropology of Japan at the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies and the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Oxford. His publications include Children of the Japanese State: The Changing Role of Child Protection Institutions in Contemporary Japan (2000) and The East Asian Welfare Model: Welfare Orientalism and the State (1998).

Muramatsu Michio is Dean and Professor at the Faculty of Law, Kyoto University. His publications in Japanese include "Nihon no gyosei: Katsudogata kanryosei no henbo (Japanese public administration: Transformation of a pro-active bureaucracy)", 1994.

Yoshio Sugimoto is Professor of Sociology at La Trobe University, Melbourne. His publications include Japanese Encounters with Postmodernity (co-edited with Johann Arnason, 1995).

This is an exellent book for the beginner in studies of japanese culture. It deals with different matters such as: sumo, manga/anime, karaoke, horse-racing and womens magazines - all in a scientific but relaxed tone. Maybe you want what bosozoku-driving is??? As an introduction...

As an introduction into what "Japanese popular culture" can entail, this is a good book; the articles written may not be as in-depth as wanted or needed, but this is not a book by one scholar alone. It is simply a collection of useful articles, that explore different aspects in Japanese popular culture and act as a sort of "grounding point" for further study.

There are themes of comparative study (American superheroes v. Japanese superheroes) and also themes of changing roles and changing identities (or the converse; that in some popular images, like in manga/comics, the perception that some roles DON'T or SHOULDN'T change).

But for anyone seeking a good introduction, it is a good book and worth having on your bookshelf.

About the Author
Sir John Houghton CBE, FRS is a former Chairman of the Scientific Assessment Working Group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Chairman of the UK's Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, Vice President of the World Meteorological Organisation, President of the Royal Meteorological Society, and Professor of Atmospheric Physics at Oxford University. He was Chief Executive of the UK Meteorological Office from 1983 to his retirement in 1991. As well as the previous editions of this book, he is author of The Physics of Atmospheres (Cambridge University Press, in three editions), and has published numerous research papers and contributed to many influential research documents.

Fair, balanced, scientific, non-partisan, clear.

I have to take immediate issue with the [anonymous] reviews below that claim that this book doesn't address the difference between natural climate cycling and anthropogenic climate change: that difference, in a nutshell, is PRECISELY what this book deals with. Those reviewers never read it, or failed completely to follow its line of reasoning. This is NOT a partisan, political, ideological book. It is simply a guided tour of the science of climate change, revised in 2004. It carefully parses the current research. Read the table of contents [you can click on it at the top of the page] and see that the book is organized around the following inevitable questions: Is climate changing? How much is it changing? How much of that change is caused by people? What are the likely effects, short- and long-term, of these changes? What can we do about it? In the case of climate change, despite all of the political complications that have accrued to what was originally science, these questions are PRECISELY the ones a thinking person needs to ask. To have a book structured around them, referring, as it does, to the best [scientific, independently-refereed] research is a gift. It seems that almost everybody today picks their position on climate change as part of an ideological package-deal: most American conservatives almost automatically disdain the science because the Bush White House and Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter disdain it. Most American progressives almost automatically embrace the NOTION of climate change without actually knowing the science, because Al Gore, et al, have told them to. Both positions, taken in ignorance of the science, are ideolgical and symptomatic of the worst party-line politics. I urge you to read the science. It will take some effort, but that effort is our civic duty. This book has no agenda other than compiling the research and putting it before the reading public in an accessible format.

Informative and stimulating overview of global warming issue

This is the first book I have read on global warming. Sir John Houghton has provided a carefully written account, with good explanations, fairly thorough referencing, and informative charts and figures. The subject of global warming is presented from a multifaceted perspective, with both informative factual material as well as elements of a personal perspective, introduced in a non-forceful but persuasive manner.
The book is aimed at those who know little about climatology or global warming. It will help to have some general scientific background. The pertinent facts - how much we have increased the atmosphere's CO2 concentration, in what way this gas effects the earth's energy balance, etc. - are available here, and the information is referenced to primary scientific sources. The prognosis for a warming of the atmosphere is gently asserted in the affirmative, but the uncertainties are also presented. Without being a climatologist, I found most of my qestions of this nature were answered. The only point I was curious about but found missing was what recent changes in glaciers tell us about the present tendency of global temperature.
After presenting the data, the models and arguing gently for a moderate warming tendency, Houghton presents several nice chapters on effects (potentially severe) and responses to the problem, with a particular emphasis on energy. The suggested responses leave one with the sense that Houghton is an optimist. He incites to action, where it is hard to imagine today's politicians asking us to change our habits so fundamentally.
This book is stimulating, both on the subject of global warming (whether or not it is occurring, how much, what is our role), as well as on the potential consequences and suitable responses. Considering that a response is advisable - a point of view which Houghton advances - one is left with a sense of the large scale of the responses which are necessary to reverse the accumulation of CO2: is mankind's ability to improvise its way out of a fix capable of dealing with a problem whose solution would require changes of this magnitude?

Essential Reading for Moving Past the Hype

This is an essential book for anyone who wants to move past the media hype on this important subject. It covers the breadth of the science in an accessible manner, looking at mechanisms, measurements and the broad sweep of science informing the global warming debate. It is notable that the only people who profess dislike of this book are people who have not read it. No one can deny that the author has brought together a huge mass of information and presented it in an accessible manner which nevertheless dispenses with alarmism and lays any residual scepticism to bed.

Unusually for such a work, chapter 8 looks at why we should be concerned. Or rather, why we should care if - as is the case - there will be winners as well as losers from climate change. Houghton discusses his personal belief there, and successfully brings issues of religion and ethics into the debate - something which, as he points out, is all too often deliberately left out of the discussion.

Some people dislike such an approach in a book on science. Some will think that a breath of fresh air. Whether you agree with him or not, it is good to read a Christian writer explaining why Christians should not be siding with the climate change sceptics. Nevertheless if you don't want that in a book then just ignore that chapter - the book is still more than worth its price.

Aramaic: a possible Vorlage for Q

In America for the last few decades, Q discussions in America have been largely framed by scholars like Robinson, Kloppenborg, Mack and Crossan. In their works, these scholars claim, with a surprising amount of confidence, to know many things about the origin, development, genre, character, extent and purpose of Q. As a result, many far reaching conclusions have been asserted with regard to Christian origins and the historical Jesus. But truth be told, many of these conclusions have been built on little more than speculation and methodological problems are never hard to detect.

Let me try to summarize briefly the conclusions that have been drawn by many of the folks writing books about Q who have based their works on the above-mentioned scholars. It is frequently assumed (and occasionally argued) that Q was once a single Greek document, or that it can be precisely classified according to genera (e.g. "sayings of the wise") or that Q and the "community" responsible for it can be fairly associated with ancient Cynicism. Early Christianity, we are told, began with a group of itinerant Cynics who liked to talk about nature and who enjoyed being a stick in the eye of traditionalism (earliest strata of Q). Afterwards, it evolved into an eschatologically-oriented group with much closer ties to Judaism (later strata of Q). Then, with the composition of Mark's Gospel and with the stratified Q's eventual enshrinement in the Gospel's of Matthew and Luke the origian Q was lost and all but forgotten ... until recent scholars recovered it and explained to us what it all means.

Kloppenborg's stratification theory and Downing's, Vaage's, Crossan's and Mack's claims about Jesus being a "Cynic sage" have provided popular authors with fodder for all sorts of ridiculous historical reconstructions about the life of Jesus and early Christianity. In his own historical sketch of Q research Casey runs through the scholarship leading up to our sad current state of affairs in Q scholarship, focusing on men like Toedt, Luehrman and Kloppenborg, showing how their methodologies were very unsound and have been accepted all-too-uncritically. Casey complains of how Q research has become "beaurocratized", by which he means that scholars often rely on one another's prior arguments rather than personal examinations of the primary source material (e.g. the recent discoveries at Qumran). He also points to the way arguments for Q involve a lot of question-begging techniques. For example, the arguments Kloppenborg uses to show how Luke or Matthew displaced certain sayings within Q could just as easily be taken to show that these sayings originally existed independently and were not extracted from an existing document (at least not one with its own meaningful arrangement) and then rearranged according to the redactor's theological programme.

Casey's criticisms on recent Q scholarship would alone make the book worth buying since good criticisms like his are going virtually unheard in the ruckus of all the sensationalist ideas being proposed these days.

Casey also, rather unexpectedly, criticizes many of the early Aramaic approaches to the Gospels, even Matthew Black's impressive work. I found his remarks here insightful and an indicator of his own reflective and critical mind.

Casey's thesis is that at least some of Q was originally preserved in Aramaic, not Greek. Moreover, it was not a united composition, but may have existed as several independent sayings. The translated Greek Q existed in at least two translations before Matthew and Luke got to it and these distinctive translations are detectable and partially recoverable by retroverting the texts into Aramaic - the language in which they were originally preserved and which Jesus most likely knew and spoke.

Casey also challenges the widespread assumption that Q contained nothing more than what Matthew and Luke now hold in common. For example, it is often characterized as a "sayings source" since it contains very few narratives. But this claim relies on a rather elaborate view of stratification. As it comes down to us, Q contained several narratives (e.g. stories about John the Baptist, Christ's temptation, the healing of the centurion's servant, Peter's leaving the scene and weeping bitterly after his three-fold denial, the question posed to Christ, "Who is he that struck you?").

One problem I have with Casey is his method of demonstrating the Aramaic Vorlage behind Q: he tries to show how Matthew or Luke may have misread or misinterpreted certain Aramaic words. I'm not convinced any of these arguments really hold up.

Still, the book comes as a refresher to me since I've read several books on this topic now and they've usually been from the same standpoint. This book offers a different look at things and I think presents some good food for thought. A more comprehensive book on Q that I'd recommend is "Q and Early Christianity" by Christopher Tuckett. Richard Horsley has also written some good critiques of Kloppenborg. For a good critique of the Cynic hypothesis, Craig Evans has a good chapter in his book "Fabricating Jesus." It's a very easy read too, unlike this book by Casey.

Very Good Book

This is quite a good book, but very technical. In a number of places the author of Mark's Gospel was actually translating from Aramaic. This should not be too surprising given that both Jesus and the Apostles preached predominately in Aramaic but is has been ignored by theologians for a long time. Casey reconstructs a number of passages and shows that certain parts of the Gospel are probably earlier (40-50 CE) than the date given for the complete Gospel (varies but usually around 65-70 CE).
