From Library Journal
This excellent, single-volume resource aspires to be a comprehensive study of singing throughout history. That it succeeds as well as it does is a remarkable accomplishment. Potter (music, Univ. of York, U.K.) has gathered essays from a wide variety of (mostly British) performers, teachers, and musicologists. Rather than attempting a chronological arrangement, the chapters have been grouped into four loosely connected areas. Popular Traditions looks at vocal styles seldom covered in books on vocal history: an essay by David Troop on the origins and development of rap, chapters on singing in jazz and rock music, and an intriguing look at vocal traditions in world music. The Voice in the Theater and Choral Music and Song cover more familiar territory but do it succinctly and thoroughly. The final section, Performance Practice, again broadens the scope, with chapters on vocal pedagogy; the training and use of children!s voices; vocal acoustics; Alternative Voices: Contemporary Vocal Techniques, which reveals the new demands placed on singers by 20th-century composers; and the use of electronic enhancement as an expressive device. This unique volume is highly recommended for its depth of coverage, uniformly accessible writing, and very reasonable price."Kate McCaffrey, Onondaga Cty. P.L., NY

Review
"This unique volume is highly recommended for its depth of coverage, uniformly accessible writing, and very reasonable price." Library Journal, August 2000

"With such distinguished authorities as Stephen Banfield, John Rosselli, Stephen Varcoe, and David Mason contributing, the guide covers its wide range of topics accessibly as well as thoroughly for a one-volume work. Those for whom singing is a joyous activity will treasure the book and learn much about the vocal arts that might otherwise take years of personal research." Alan Hirsch, Booklist

"The volume is full of valuable knowledge, transmitted with warmth and enthusiasm..." Annabella Bankhouse, The Times Literary Supplement

"...this book appeals to a wide audience with one thing in common: a love of singing." Chamber Music

"This companion constitutes a general summary of 'where we have come from' at the turn of the century/millennium and suggests that future generations will have to take popular and world culture much more seriously...will interest singers, voice teachers, music theater teachers and practitioners, musicologists, and those who pursue studies in popular culture and interdisciplinary studies involving music." About the Author
John Potter is the author of Vocal Authority (Cambridge University Press, 1998) and Tenor: History of a Voice (Cambridge University Press, 2009). He has contributed articles to many academic journals and chapters to other books, including The Cambridge History of Medieval Music (forthcoming) and The Cambridge History of Musical Performance (2012). He is Reader Emeritus in Music at the University of York, having stepped down from his lectureship in 2010 to focus on his portfolio of freelance projects. His most recent book, published by Cambridge University Press in 2012, is A History of Singing (jointly authored with ethnomusicologist Neil Sorrell). As a singer, John has partnerships with instrumentalists in various parts of the world, notably the Argentinian lutenist and vihuelist Ariel Abramovich, the American medieval harpist Jan Walters and the British electro-acoustic composer Ambrose Field. He also sings with Red Byrd, The Dowland Project, the Gavin Bryars Ensemble and German group The Sound and the Fury. His most recent venture is Cantum Pulcriorum Invenire, a research project at the University of Southampton, which will see the release of three CDs of twelfth-century music on Hyperion, and a multimedia live version with tenor Christopher O'Gorman and video artist Michael Lynch. John spent eighteen years with the Hilliard Ensemble and his complete discography runs to some 150 titles. He also coaches vocal ensembles all over the world and chairs the ensemble contest jury at the Tampere Vocal Festival (Finland).

Best for students
By Mark Swinton
John Potter, one of the tenors in the Hilliard Ensemble and a lecturer at my university music department in York, is one of the most eclectic and dynamic singers of our time. This collection of essays on the art of vocal music, including two pieces of his own work, is designed to provide students of singing with a useful set of reference points.
If you are a singer, you would certainly do well to consider getting hold of this. Some chapters deal with the mechanics of the voice and the acoustical properties thereof; this can become very technical and indeed is not a pre-requiste for singing, but some of it makes for interesting reading. More interesting are the various chapters on various singing traditions of the world: German lieder, jazz vocals, opera, church and cathedral choirs, singing amongst indiginous cultures of Africa, America and the Far East, singing as part of primary school education. Potter's own contributions include a useful one on ensemble singing that draws heavily on his experience with the Hillard Ensemble; there is also a chapter (translated into English) about choir warm-ups, particular those that are useful for children's choirs. These chapters in particular should be considered invaluable to choir directors as well as to chamber choirs and vocal ensembles seeking to achieve the kind of excellence achieved by the Hilliards. Other contributors to the book include well-known singers and academics such as Stephen Varcoe.
This book is not recommended to the casual reader, however. The overall tone is very academic and it is far better if you are studying singing academically; I have never had a proper singing lesson in my life, but as someone who sings regularly and has an interest in the direction of singing ensembles, I find this book useful to open up from time to time.

String Theory (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics) (Volume 2), by Joseph Polchinski

Volume 2: Superstring Theory and Beyond, begins with an introduction to supersymmetric string theories and goes on to a broad presentation of the important advances of recent years. The book first introduces the type I, type II, and heterotic superstring theories and their interactions. It then goes on to present important recent discoveries about strongly coupled strings, beginning with a detailed treatment of D-branes and their dynamics, and covering string duality, M-theory, and black hole entropy, and discusses many classic results in conformal field theory. The final four chapters are concerned with four-dimensional string theories, and have two goals: to show how some of the simplest string models connect with previous ideas for unifying the Standard Model; and to collect many important and beautiful general results on world-sheet and spacetime symmetries.

Review
"The present volume succeeds in giving a detailed yet comprehensive account of our current knowledge of superstring dynamics. The topics covered range from the basic construction of the theories to the most recent discoveries on their non-perturbative behaviour. The discussion is remarkably self-contained (the volume even contains a useful appendix on spinors and supersymmetry in several dimensions), and thus may serve as an introduction to the subject, and as an excellent reference for researchers in the field."
Mathematical Reviews

"Polchinski's books are a classic textbook on string theory. And I recommend it to you if you want to start the study of string theory... the first volume is an excellent textbook and a great introduction to string theory. Presents some deep chapters, but overall a great book for any student interested in entering the world of string theory. The book is consistent with the objective set out, well written for graduate students and probably one of the best textbooks on the market about string theory and shall remain so for a long time. these two books are great and of excellent quality. The book is consistent with the goal set in the early chapters, presents clear language with few errors and with a high degree of mathematical rigor. The book contains an excellent range of problems and an excellent glossary and the educational value of this book is incalculable. Definitely these books are references for the study in string theory and it will stay with this position."

Very Poor printing Quality
By Pecci
This review is not for the content of this book, as we all know, there's no question reguarding Polchinski's great book.

This review is for the quality of this paper back edition. This edition is called "On-demand digital printing edition". Right after you place the order, the publisher will print one exact copy of this book by their laser printer, and bind it and then ship it to you. The quality is just like cheap Indian edition, The cover looks especially cheap, and will be broken into two pieces miniutes after you first open the book. The cut is not even aligned. It is worth no more than $20.

The definitive introduction to String Theory
By Ram
I used Polchinski Vol I and II to learn String Theory for my PhD thesis. Vol I covers the basics, using the bosonic string to quantize, and Vol II starts off with the perturbative type II and heterotic strings and soon moves on to nonperturbative string theory, elegantly summarizing the dualities, D-branes (which of course Polchinski discovered), Calabi-Yau compactifications, flop transitions etc. Vol II is essentially a reference for modern string theory. The chapter on advanced CFT is wonderfuly written, and is perhaps the best summary of CFT available in any book (even tomes devoted to CFT pale in comparison). The two volumes of Polchinski are clearly a must read for anybody who wishes to understand string theory. It is an exceptionally well written text on a difficult subject.

Great book, wish there was more
By Dean Welch
This book picks up for Volume I left off. Supersymmetry is added to strings, more symmetries are presented, string theory phenomenology is described and many topics introduced in Volume I are developed in more detail. The quality is as good as it was in the previous volume and I think this book is essential reading for anyone attempting to master string theory.

The main addition in this volume is the expanded coverage of supersymmetry. In brief, the early chapter topics include the relation of worldsheet supersymmetry to spacetime supersymmetry, the various types of superstrings (I, IIA, IIB, and Heterotic) and even W-algebras. Calculations of critical dimensions, scattering amplitudes and anomaly cancellations are also done.

After incorporating supersymmetry into D-branes and T-duality (two concepts first introduced in the context of bosonic strings in Volume I), the text moves on to cover strings at strong coupling. It's a great chapter, my favorite of the book. Among the things covered are U-duality, black hole entropy, the black hole information paradox and M-theory.

After a chapter covering conformal field theory in more detail there are two chapters on compactification. One for orbifolds and one for Calabi-Yau spaces. The latter gives a nice overview of the techniques of complex geometry and algebraic topology needed to study Calabi-Yau spaces (there is also an appendix covering much of the math). Phenomenology is touched on in these, but it's in the following chapter that a more fully developed presentation of the possible string theory connection with the standard model and grand unified field theory is given. One thing I enjoyed was that in addition to string specific physics, this chapter discusses more general aspects of grand unified theories.

The final chapter contains a collection of advanced topics, with mirror symmetry being one of them.

To summarize this is a can't miss book for people seeking to understand string theory. Is anything missing? Not really, although more extensive coverage of black holes and D-branes would've been nice. It definitely left me wishing there was a Volume III on the horizon.

Frost as one of the all-time greats
By George Goldberg
If you agree that Robert Frost was one of the greatest poets in English literary history, and enormously erudite if "elusively complex," then you will love this book unreservedly. I think of Frost more as a melodist, perhaps because I sang Randall Thompson's Frostiana in a chorus shortly after its composition, and because I generally find Frost's poetry more musical than scholarly. Still, there's lots of excellent stuff in this book. Highly recommended.

Black Nationalism in American Politics and Thought, by Professor Dean E. Robinson

Black Nationalism in American Politics and Thought revisits the activism and arguments in support of separate black statehood from the mid-19th century to the present, detailing the ways black nationalism mirrors broader currents in U.S. politics and thought. This book challenges the idea that black nationalism is a timeless, unchanging, and anti-assimilationist impulse. It argues that black nationalism in the United States draws on analogous political strategy and thinking unique to specific historical eras--often inadvertently reproducing strategies and thinking responsible for racial inequality in the first place.

From Booklist
Despite the image of black nationalism as relatively timeless and unchanging, Robinson, a political science professor, sees the movement as reflecting the contemporary themes of various time frames. He defines black nationalism as a separatist ideology, reflecting over time the abolitionist efforts to relocate slaves to Africa, the back-to-Africa movement made famous by Marcus Garvey, and, more recently, the racial politics of the Nation of Islam. Robinson provides strong supportive evidence that black nationalists share the conventional assumptions of their time, with a common thread of reaction to white racism. Robinson examines the major personalities identified with black nationalism--Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, and Louis Farrakhan--and explores the essentially conservative nature of the Garvey and Nation of Islam movements, despite their radical images. He also explores the problematic image of black nationalism as a movement that denies the essential Americanness of blacks and the failure of whites to treat blacks as full Americans, a failure that continues to nourish the idea of black nationalism. I would recommend this book for anyone to read
By Michael Tang
Very interesting book. I bought it for a class and it has a distinct writing style. I would recommend this book for anyone to read. However, the only issue with this book is the specificity of the material and the need for compound material. The book does a good job of highlighting intricate detail but you need a background in the information to begin with.

Aristotle: Nicomachean Ethics (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy), by Aristotle

Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, based on lectures that he gave in Athens in the fourth century BCE, is one of the most significant works in moral philosophy, and has profoundly influenced the whole course of subsequent philosophical endeavor. Topics covered include the role of luck in human wellbeing, responsibility, courage, justice, friendship and pleasure. This accessible new translation follows the Greek text closely and also provides a non-Greek reader with something of the flavor of the original. The volume also includes a historical and philosophical introduction and notes on further reading.

Right next to the ROT for my purposes.
By The Great Penguin Adventure
I'll spare you my thoughts on the Nicomachean Ethics. I'll spare you my thoughts on Aristotle. If you've gotten this far in your search for a copy of the text, then you probably don't need to be told how wonderful Aristotle is. I'll just assume for the sake of my review that you're looking at various translations, perhaps because you don't read Greek and can't do your own. The revised Oxford translation is preferred by many of my colleagues. The Hackett, which was my first edition of the Nicomachean Ethics, seems to be generally regarded as inferior to the ROT. I still have a soft spot for aspects of Irwin's translation, but I don't use it when I'm writing and I don't use it to check my own translations. There are a couple of other newer translations floating around (Broadie and Rowe, Bartlett and Collins) but I have very limited experience with them.

Crisp has done a wonderful job here, I think. The translation is very readable and he only rarely follows the general trend of trying to inject debatably anachronistic philosophy into the text (I was a bit disappointed to see Crisp opt for "supervene" in X, but basically everyone does...so perhaps he can't be faulted). It really seems to me that "follows on" does the same work without the philosophical baggage...but, hey, why not do your own translation, right? Aristotle's arguments, especially in the later books, are often paragraph-long syllogisms and Crisp keeps things focused and as manageable as possible.

I purchased this for a two-person reading group. We were using the ROT as our baseline and I was reading the Crisp as a supplement and for the sake of checking spots that seemed particularly sticky. I think we agreed that depending on what you're hoping to find in the reading, you might prefer one translation over the other for purposes of supporting a particular line of argument, etc. If you're just reading the EN for the first time, or reading it for a seminar, I doubt you will find much to quibble with here.

Overall there were just as many times over the course of the group that we felt Crisp bested the ROT as there were times the opposite was true.

Not for the totally uninitiated, in my opinion. Crisp's Cambridge edition does not include notes. The recent Brown revision of the ROT has very useful notes and won't let you down for most purposes.

I'm trying to think of a nice way to sum things up...chances are if you're buying this one of the following is the case:
a) it's been assigned for a class and this was the specified edition. If so, great, I don't think you're being led in the wrong direction and you'll find Crisp very readable.

b) you're doing some research on Aristotle, Aristotle's ethics, or virtue ethics in general. Unless you're reading Aristotle's philosophy for the first time, you can probably get by without any notes...so this edition would serve you well.

c) you're just awesome all on your own and want to read Aristotle and, in particular, one of the most important and best works of philosophy ever written (oops, looks like I ended up gushing in my review after all). This is a really fine edition and I wouldn't steer anyone away from it. However, if you haven't read much philosophy you might really like having notes on difficult passages and technical terms (Crisp does have a brief glossary here, but no notes). If so, I would suggest Brown's revision of the ROT.

d) you're a graduate student and you want to compare various available translations, or compare various existing translations against your own. I think having Crisp alongside the ROT is a great combination. Then again, if this is you, you probably don't need my recommendation.

UPDATE: The other participant in my reading group reminded me of one other important (missing) feature in the Crisp edition: Crisp has included Bekker page numbers and columns, but no line numbers. At times this made getting to the same line a small hassle. It doesn't change my rating, but it is worth noting.

Doing the right thing
By FrKurt Messick
Aristotle was a philosopher in search of the chief good for human beings. This chief good is eudaimonia, which is often translated as 'happiness' (but can also be translated as 'thriving' or 'flourishing'). Aristotle sees pleasure, honour and virtue as significant 'wants' for people, and then argues that virtue is the most important of these.

In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle makes the claim that happiness is something which is both precious and final. This seems to be so because it is a first principle or ultimate starting point. For, it is for the sake of happiness that we do everything else, and we regard the cause of all good things to be precious and divine. Moreover, since happiness is an activity of the soul in accordance with complete and perfect virtue, it is necessary to consider virtue, as this will be the best way of studying happiness.

How many of us today speak of happiness and virtue in the same breath? Aristotle's work in the Nicomachean Ethics is considered one of his greatest achievements, and by extension, one of the greatest pieces of philosophy from the ancient world. When the framers of the American Declaration of Independence were thinking of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, there is little doubt they had an acquaintance with Aristotle's work connecting happiness, virtue, and ethics together.

When one thinks of ethical ideas such as an avoidance of extremes, of taking the tolerant or middle ground, or of taking all things in moderation, one is tapping into Aristotle's ideas. It is in the Nicomachean Ethics that Aristotle proposes the Doctrine of the Mean - he states that virtue is a 'mean state', that is, it aims for the mean or middle ground. However, Aristotle is often misquoted and misinterpreted here, for he very quickly in the text disallows the idea of the mean to be applied in all cases. There are things, actions and emotions, that do not allow the mean state. Thus, Aristotle tends to view virtue as a relative state, making the analogy with food - for some, two pounds of meat might be too much food, but for others, it might be too little. The mean exists between the state of deficiency, too little, and excessiveness, too much.

Aristotle proposes many different examples of virtues and vices, together with their mean states. With regard to money, being stingy and being illiberal with generosity are the extremes, the one deficient and the other excessive. The mean state here would be liberality and generosity, a willingness to buy and to give, but not to extremes. Anger, too, is highlighted as having a deficient state (too much passivity), an excessive state (too much passion) and a mean state (a gentleness but firmness with regard to emotions).

Aristotle states that one of the difficulties with leading a virtuous life is that it takes a person of science to find the mean between the extremes (or, in some cases, Aristotle uses the image of a circle, the scientist finding the centre). Many of us, being imperfect humans, err on one side or the other, choosing in Aristotle's words, the lesser of two evils. Aristotle's wording here, that a scientist is the only one fully capable of virtue, has a different meaning for scientist - this is a pre-modern, pre-Enlightenment view; for Aristotle, the person of science is one who is capable of observation and calculation, and this can take many different forms.

Aristotle uses different kinds of argumentation in the Nicomachean Ethics. He uses a dialectical method, as well as a functional method. In the dialectical method, there are opposing ideas held in tension, whose interactions against each other yield a result - this is often how the mean between extremes is derived. However, there are other times that Aristotle seems to prefer a more direct, functional approach. Both of these methods lead to the same understanding for Aristotle's sense of the rational - that humanity's highest or final good is happiness.

There is a discussion of the human soul (for this is where virtue and happiness reside). Aristotle argues that virtue is not a natural state; we are not born with nor do we acquire through any natural processes virtue, but rather through 'habitation', an embedding process or enculturation that makes these a part of our soul. However, it is not sufficient for Aristotle's virtue that one merely function as a virtuous person or that virtuous things be done. This is not a skill, but rather an art, and to be virtuous, one must live virtuously and act virtuously with intention as well as form.

Of course, one of the implications here is that virtue is a quantifiable thing, that periodically resurfaces in later philosophies. How do we calculate virtue?

This is a difficult question, and not one that Aristotle answers in any definitive way. However, more important than this is the key difference that Aristotle displayed setting himself apart from his tutor Plato; rather than seeing the possession of 'the good' or 'virtue' as the highest ideal, Aristotle is concerned with the practical aspects, the ethics of this. Based on Aristotle's lectures in Athens in the fourth century BCE, this remains one of the most important works on ethical and moral philosophy in history.

Worth the dollar!

Bought this for my ethics class. Instead of paying like $12 for the physical book, I got this for a dollar. Interesting and good for the class. Only complaint is that this translation doesn't have the titles that the physical book does.

The King James Bible: A Short History from Tyndale to Today, by David Norton

The King James Bible was the result of an extraordinary effort over nearly a century to make many good English translations and turn them into what the translators called 'one principal good one, not justly to be excepted against'. David Norton traces the work of Tyndale and his successors, analyzing the translation and revisions of two representative passages. His fascinating new account follows in detail the creation of the KJB, including attention to the translators' manuscript work. He also examines previously unknown evidence such as the diary of John Bois, the only man who made notes on the translation. At the centre of the book is a thorough discussion of the first edition. The latter part of the book traces the printing and textual history of the KJB and provides a concise account of its changing scholarly and literary reputations.

Review
'By his work as editor of The New Cambridge Paragraph Bible and through his careful study of manuscripts left by King James's translators, David Norton has made himself master of his subject. This history of the King James Bible is detailed, clear, and complete.' Ward S. Allen, author of Translating the New Testament Epistles 1604-1611

'Professor David Norton has written a brilliant little book. It is a fine summary of Christian and literary heritage ... Its usefulness will appeal primarily to the educated Pastor and the serious student. It is a beautifully-produced volume, divided into manageable sections for the busy reader, well-laced with biblical quotations and illustrations ...' English Churchman

'Readable, surprising and informative.' Irish Examiner

'David Norton ... produces a masterly account of the interstices of translation, enabling us to look over the shoulders of those remarkable KJB scholars [F. R. Leavis and F. W. Bateson].' Financial Times

'This is micro-history at its very best and it brings us closer to understanding the chaps behind 1611's most noteworthy book.' Catholic Herald

'A minutely documented, erudite and yet infinitely readable account of the making of the KJB.' The Typographic Hub (typographichub.org)

'[Norton] gives a scholarly, yet vivid and wholly human account of the printing and design of the King James Bible.' The Typographic Hub (typographichub.org)

'Norton's achievement is to demystify the KJB by reconstructing, in careful and precise detail, what is known of the process of translation ... [He] does a masterly job of assembling the scattered evidence that remains ...' The Times Literary Supplement

'[This] is perhaps the best current book for the reader who wants a sound, scholarly and sober account of the AV.' Faith and Worship

'Amongst the minor flood of books that have been published to mark the four hundredth anniversary of the King James Bible, few, as is the nature of things, will prove to be of lasting value. This is one that will last. This goes much further than some more general surveys that do give the historical context, but leave the reader deprived of the 'mechanics' of translation. Norton's book supplies the want.' Ian Gibbs, thegoodbookstall.org.uk

Scholarly and Informative
By Jim F. Wilson
There is an amazing amount of information packed into this 200 page book. David Norton is one of the leading, perhaps the leading, scholar of the King James Bible today. He has spent years meticulously studying and comparing various editions, the process of formation, and the influence of the KJB. All those years of effort are evident in this book and the reader is the beneficiary.

Chapter 1 deals with the predecessors of the KJB, beginning with Tyndale. Norton thinks of these predecessors as 'drafts' for the KJB, which I found an instructive way of looking at the history.

Chapters 2 - 5 deal with the KJB itself, beginning with the call for the translation at the Hampton Court Conference, the formation of 'companies' or committees to translate various parts of the Bible, and its eventual publication. There is fascinating material about the personalities of various translators and what comes through is the astonishing erudition of the group as a whole. Norton also analyzes the notes that still survive from a small number of these translators and what they tell us about how the groups worked. It is a glimpse into the actual process that led to the KJB.

Chapters 6 & 7 deal with the contemporary situation, and some printing history as well. Norton knows more about the various editions of the KJB than perhaps anyone, having studied this meticulously in his task of editing the Cambridge Paragraph Bible. So this is a well documented section.

Chapter 7 is a discussion of the 'Reputation and Future' of the KJB. The Chapter begins with a detailed history of the KJB's reception over the centuries, how it became the central work and the Bible for the English speaking world. Then we move into the Post WW II era, and new translations began to appear, criticism of the KJB began to mount. Gradually this evolved into the situation we have today with many competing translations of the Bible all vying for attention from the Bible reading public. Here in this Chapter we finally hear from Norton some of his personal feelings about the KJB. On page 199 he writes, ". . . I think its (the KJB's) scholarship -- that is, its knowledge of and fidelity to the original texts -- is underestimated. Setting aside the quality of the texts it translated, especially the Greek Received Text, it is remarkably sensitive in its awareness of how English may represent the originals. It is a triumph of judicious -- rather than slavish -- literal translation."

On the same page, Norton also states, ". . . the language is not as difficult as it often appears. So much based in the Anglo-Saxon roots of English, it has more in cmmon with modern English than many English classics, including Shakespeare." Norton here is suggesting that those who think of the KJB as obscure or 'archaic' are exaggerating and that, for the most part, the KJB is easily readable by people today.

Although Norton does not say so explicitly, I think Norton is optimistic about the future of the KJB. As Norton says on page 200, the KJB is a Bible that "rewards engagement" and it is this quality of feeling rewarded when reading it that, I feel, continues to draw people to its pages.

This is a scholarly work; meticulous and academic in the best sense of that word. All in all this is a reference work that those interested in the KJB can refer to for many years to come.

'an impressive achievement'
By Paul Grainger
In 1604 King James offered to commission a new translation of the Bible. A committee of approximately fifty persons was set up comprising academics, ecclesiastics and people experienced in editing texts. The official brief was to follow, as faithfully as possible, the Bishop's Bible which was at that time the one that was read in the church.

There is only one surviving account of the committee's work and that is in the form of notes taken of the proceedings by John Bois who was a committee member. This account together, with extensive research of what other scattered evidence there is, comprises the opening section of David Norton's book.

This `short history' focuses almost entirely on how the text evolved, from the original Tyndale edition, via the product of King James's committee (published in 1611) to present-day versions published by the Oxford and Cambridge presses. Thus, over a period of four centuries the translation process is detailed almost step-by-step. It is an impressive achievement.

Sentimental Opera: Questions of Genre in the Age of Bourgeois Drama (Cambridge Studies in Opera), by Stefano Castelvecchi

Sentimental Opera is a study of the relationship between opera and two major phenomena of eighteenth-century European culture - the cult of sensibility and the emergence of bourgeois drama. A thorough examination of social and cultural contexts helps to explain the success of operas such as Paisiello's Nina as well as the extreme emotional reactions of their audiences. Like their counterparts in drama, literature and painting, these works brought to the fore serious contemporary problems including the widespread execution of deserters, the treatment of the insane, and anxieties relative to social and familial roles. They also developed a specifically operatic version of the dominant language of sensibility. This wide-ranging study involves such major cultural figures as Goldoni, Diderot and Mozart, while refining our understanding of the theatrical genre system of their time.

Adam Smith and the Virtues of Enlightenment (Modern European Philosophy), by Charles L. Griswold Jr.

Although Adam Smith is often thought of today as an economist, he was in fact (as his great contemporaries Hume, Burke, Kant, and Hegel recognized) an original and insightful thinker whose work covers an immense territory including moral philosophy, political economy, rhetorical theory, aesthetics, and jurisprudence. Charles Griswold has written the first comprehensive philosophical study of Smith's moral and political thought. Griswold sets Smith's work in the context of the continuing debate about the nature and survival of the Enlightenment, and relates it to current discussions in moral and political philosophy. Smith's appropriation as well as criticism of ancient philosophy, and his carefully balanced defense of a liberal and humane moral and political outlook, are also explored. This is a major reassessment of a key figure in modernity that will be of particular interest to philosophers and political and legal theorists, as well as historians of ideas, rhetoric, and political economy.

Review
"In a rich and detailed examination of The Theory of Moral Sentiments Griswold presents Smith as a rhetorically sophisticated dialectical thinker, defending Enlightenment values while aware of their profound costs, seeking a philosophical system while distrustful of the system, and aiming to guard ordinary moral life against excessive reflection. This is a major study, resting on a thorough rethinking of all of Smith's work. Griswold shows Smith to be a more complex moral thinker than he has been taken to be, and one far more pertinent to current issues." Jerome B. Schneewind, The Johns Hopkins University

"With one eye on the eighteenth century and the other on our current predicament, Charles Griswold's Adam Smith and the Virtues of Enlightenment is wonderfully interesting and informative, philosophically stimulating and acute, and beautifully written." Stephen Darwall, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

"...written for an audience of professional philosophers. But it is also exemplary in spelling out many of Smith's arguments and subjecting them to analytic scrutiny." Jerry Z. Muller, The Wall Street Journal

"...rewarding for economists seeking a deeper understanding of Smith's ideas." Choice

"...it is perhaps not surprising that Smith has sen something of a renaissance, with numerous studies published that help to restore him to his rightful place in the Western tradition. At the top of this list is Charles Griswold's excellent new book, Adam Smith and the Virtues of Enlightenment. Griswold Performs a valuable service by showing us that one of the Enlightenment's most important founding thinkers believed that liberal commercial societies were dependent on, productive of, and ultimately legitimated not by wealth or freedom but by virtue. Griswold walks us through Smith's highly complex account...." The Public Interest

"...pathbreaking..." Charles Larmore, The New Republic

"Adam Smith and the Virtues of Enlightenment is written by and largely for philosophers...Yet it should be studied by all who are interested in Adam Smith; it may fundamentally change the way they view Smith...Griswold's work merits a careful, deep reading by a large part of the contemporary literati." The Annals of the American Academy

"...brilliant study...Griswold's book illuminates a wide range of themes in Smith's moral philosophy..." Journal of the History of Philosophy

Smith's morality given the weight it deserves
By A Customer
Griswold's book is pitched squarely between the academic of, and the interested newcomer to, the Enlightenment. It gives a refreshingly new outlook over enlightenment ideas as a whole, to illustrate the back drop to Adam Smith's moral notions. In examining the key themes in 'The Theory Of Moral Sentiments' with reference to Smith's whole body of work, Griswold is rare in attributing, to the work, the importance and weight it deserves. Books that focus on Adam Smith's moral philosphy are rare and this book is by no means a weak example of them. If you are at all interested in Adam Smith, and particularly those interested in 'The Wealth of Nations' you need to look at his moral roots, and Griswold's book is an excellent secondary text to look at.

A Solid Effort!
By Rolf Dobelli
Put on your scuba gear - we're diving down deep. Even though Charles L. Griswold, Jr. writes in a dense, academic style, it is worth swimming through his prose to learn about the remarkable work of 18th-century Enlightenment philosopher Adam Smith. Regarded as one of the fathers of modern economic thought, Smith has been misunderstood for the last century because his ethical philosophy has been overlooked. Instead, economists have drawn attention only to his thumbs-up for free enterprise and free trade. Smith believed neither was worthwhile without ethics, a point some modern economists might profitably revisit. We [...] highly recommend this richly detailed, insightful book to anyone interested in economic, political, or social philosophy.

The Best Analysis of 'Moral Sentiments'
By Ian Mackechnie
Jerry Muller (The Mind and the Market) said this is the best commentary on Adam Smith's 'Moral Sentiments' and he is right! Griswold provides a thoughtful and understandable analysis of Smith's 'theory' of moral sentiments.

His explanation of the 'actor' and the 'spectator', the 'impartial spectator', the conscience, and just what 'morality' means to Smith are so clear. Griswold raises possible objections to Smith's system and answers them satisfactorily, showing a keen 'sympathy' with the topic he is so ably handling.

This book is a must, not only for Smith scholars, but for anyone interested in what morality is all about and how it all developed (and is still developing).

Buy this great work and have a mental and moral feast!
