Tough going but well worth the effort

Very scholarly. As a layman, it was a challenge to follow/understand some of the articles. Nevertheless, with a bit of effort, I gained some further insights into Spinoza's thought. Especially enjoyed the article discussing the stoic influences on Spinoza's philosophy.

The Dynamics of Industrial Competition describes the internal dynamics of industries using new and unique longitudinal data that make it possible to track firms over time. It provides a comprehensive picture of a number of aspects of firm turnover in North America that arise from the competitive process - the entry and the exit of firms, the growth and the decline of incumbent firms, and the merger process. Instantaneous and cumulative measures of market dynamics are provided. Since the forces contributing to competition are varied and industries are affected by heterogeneous forces, different aspects of firm turnover are considered in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the competitive process. Entry is divided into that portion coming from the creation of new plants and that portion arising from the acquisition of existing firms. Differences are drawn between the effects of related and unrelated acquisitions and between the effects of take-overs made by domestic and foreign firms. Differences between large- and small-firm activity are also investigated. The effects of turnover on productivity, efficiency, wage rates, and profitability are extensively model led. Using various measures of firm turnover to proxy the amount of competition, the study examines and contextualizes the relationship between industry performance and the intensity of the competitive process.

I am the author's grad student so my rating may be biased. Nonetheless I would recommend the book as a comprehensive and well-written intro to category theory. There is a wealth of examples and exercises to motivate discussion and add depth to the material.

About the Author
Isaac Chavel is Professor of Mathematics at The City College of the City University of New York. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Yeshiva University under the direction of Professor Harry E. Rauch. He has published in international journals in the areas of differential geometry and partial differential equations, especially the Laplace and heat operators on Riemannian manifolds. His other books include Eigenvalues in Riemannian Geometry (1984) and Isoperimetric Inequalities: Differential Geometric and Analytic Perspectives (Cambridge University Press, 2001). He has been teaching at The City College of the City University of New York since 1970, and has been a member of the doctoral program of the City University of New York since 1976. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society.

Timothy Marr is Assistant Professor in the Curriculum in American Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he teaches seminars on such topics as cultural memory, captivity, tobacco, birth and death, and mating and marriage. He became interested in the subject of this book while teaching Herman Melville's Moby-Dick at Lahore American School in Pakistan in the late 1980s. He is the co-editor of Ungraspable Phantom: Essays on Moby-Dick.

An interesting venture in an evolving historiography

An interesting work in an arena of American history that is only now getting its due attention. A quick note about other reviewers discussing this book: Why would one bother reading anything at all, if you're mind's already so intransigently set on one way of viewing things. To those who would like to explore more deeply the contingencies of early American contact with the Muslim world, and how that contact shaped certain enduring epistemologies, this book isn't a bad place to start.

All you need to know to understand Islam -- regardless of anyone's perception of it -- is what the genocidal pedophile Muhammad preached and practiced, and what his followers have done in fits and starts -- as knowledge, zeal, and resources have allowed -- for the last nearly one and one-half millennia.

The fact that Muslims are characterizing what Marr reports as "mis-images" and "conflicted view[s]" of Islam must mean that Marr's work is more accurate than not.

If one wishes to understand Islam historically -- especially in relation to the United States -- then one need look only to John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and John Quincy Adams. The first Mr. Adams and Mr. Jefferson discovered from a Muslim ambassador himself that the reason for the Barbary wars against the new Republic was -- before we had done anything at all, and centuries before George W. Bush was born -- their "divine" mandate to war against unbelievers:

"'It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy's ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once.'"

John Quincy understood Islam well, describing it as a hellish and existential threat:

"In the seventh century of the Christian era, a wandering Arab of the lineage of Hagar [i.e., Muhammad], the Egyptian, combining the powers of transcendent genius, with the preternatural energy of a fanatic, and the fraudulent spirit of an impostor, proclaimed himself as a messenger from Heaven, and spread desolation and delusion over an extensive portion of the earth. Adopting from the sublime conception of the Mosaic law, the doctrine of one omnipotent God; he connected indissolubly with it, the audacious falsehood, that he was himself his prophet and apostle. Adopting from the new Revelation of Jesus, the faith and hope of immortal life, and of future retribution, he humbled it to the dust by adapting all the rewards and sanctions of his religion to the gratification of the sexual passion. He poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex, and the allowance of polygamy; and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of mankind. THE ESSENCE OF HIS DOCTRINE WAS VIOLENCE AND LUST: TO EXALT THE BRUTAL OVER THE SPIRITUAL PART OF HUMAN NATURE

"Between these two religions, thus contrasted in their characters, a war of twelve hundred years has already raged. The war is yet flagrant . . . While the merciless and dissolute dogmas of the false prophet shall furnish motives to human action, there can never be peace upon earth, and good will towards men."

What happened to the West's hard-won, first-hand knowledge of Islam? Our military and economic supremacy shielded generations from jihad, and leftist, multicultural extremists latched onto Edward Said's ridiculous cultural ad hominem blaming us for Muslim "piety" expressed in the rape, slavery, and slaughter of non-Muslims.

And now, we've elected an allegedly-former Muslim who actively lies about traditional Islam and aids its advance around the world by supporting movements promoting shari'a. But those resisting Islamic tyranny, as in Iran? He's eating ice cream.

Here's some of what the devout don't want you to know:

"the Messenger of Allah . . . would say: 'Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war. . . . When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. . . . Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them. . . . If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them . . .'" (Muslim Book 19, Number 4294).

"fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war) . . . " (Qur'an 9:5).

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued" (Qur'an 9:29).

"The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter . . . " (Qur'an 5:33).

Ibn Kathir says of this verse: "'Wage war' mentioned here means, oppose and contradict, and it includes disbelief, blocking roads and spreading fear in the fairways. Mischief in the land refers to various types of evil." So, Muhammad requires execution, crucifixion, or cutting off hands and feet from opposite sides for "disbelief."

"Allah's Apostle said: 'I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle [. . .] if they perform that, then they save their lives and property from me . . . '" (Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 24).

"It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise" (Qur'an 8:67).

"Allah's Apostle said, '. . . I have been made victorious with terror . . .'" (Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220).

Take a pass on the Kindle edition

The Kindle edition of this book is horrendous. Chinese and Cyrillic text shows regularly as image files, even though other sections are typeset, making it impossible to adjust their size in the Kindle app. It is also rife with misspellings, of which I've noticed in English and Chinese (I can't read the Russian, but I presume similar results). Whoever compiled the e-book ought to have had someone take a second read of it because it distracts greatly from an informative monograph.

Excellent work on Changing Perceptions of Japan

S.C.M. Paine does an admirable job at writing a very enjoyable history of one of the most important conflicts of the nineteenth century. Paine's work is not intended to be a simple chronological examination of the events that constitute the story of the war. Rather, her work is intended to be a reflection of how the challenges of a changing world, the political crises and events leading to the war and the war's surprising result were perceived by late-nineteenth century Asian and European political leaders and elites. Hence, Paine relies heavily, almost entirely, on press articles from various Western newspapers published in Asia, as well as some European newspapers. She adroitly leads the reader to understand how contemporaries understood the Sino-Japanese War was a seminal conflict and how that event compelled European contemporaries to understand that Japan, and not China, was the sole Asian power that could stand among the ranks of the Great Powers at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chinese and Korean political elites' failures to adapt to the changing world are contrasted with the Japanese elite's willingness to adapt to the Industrial Revolution and the revolution in global transportation and commerce. In particular, her last chapter cogently and brilliantly describes how fundamental cultural, social, philosophical, religious and historical differences between the West and Asia and between and among Chinese, Koreans and Japanese, caused many otherwise intelligent and able Asian leaders to perceive, resist or adapt to the fundamental political, economic and social changes marking the era in ways that Western contemporaries at times found "unfathomable". Additionally, the publisher's practice of citing foreign language sources by their native language titles with English translations was very helpful and professional. Far too many of the best historical works merely provide an English language phonetic romanization of the title, often a romanization that makes locating and reviewing such a source needlessly difficult. For those who speak and read Russian, Chinese or Japanese that can be frustrating at times and I, for one, applaud the use of the Cyrillic alphabet and original Chinese, Korean and Japanese characters for the sources' titles. The only reason that I do not give this work a five star rating is that the work is not as comprehensive a treatment of the war as I would have liked. That said, the book is worth every penny!!

Japan on top now, but will China be next?

Paine's book shows how Japan used Westernizing reforms and the emerging International System to defeat China and become the dominant Great Power in East Asia. Almost immediately, the perception of Japan as a poor and weak island nation changed. The European powers and the United States began to treat Japan as an equal. Within ten years, Japan went on to defeat Imperial Russia, the first time an Asian power had beaten a Western nation since the Mongol invasion.
In this well-research and provocative book, Paine shows how Japan's victories were not so much due to her own strengths--which were considerable--but to her enemy's weaknesses; this led Japan to misjudge American power during World War II. Today, China strives to undo the consequences of the Sino-Japanese War by challenging Japan and reinserting itself on the top of the Asian pyramid. The big question is whether it will do so economically or militarily. Either way, the Asian status quo introduced after the Sino-Japanese War is likely to change.
Although designed for a general audience, specialists in Asian history could easily cut the introductory chapters and head straight for the "meat." The concluding chapters, in particular, provide an excellent summary of how and why Japan successfully modernized, as well as a highly relevant discussion of why China was--until recently that is--unable to do so. This book is required reading for all students of Asian history.
