i read this book and it seems to be very readable. it explains the physics behind the quantum heterostructures in a lucid and tractable manner. i recommend this volume before reading the treatise by weisbach & vinter. those who want to start research on quantum structures will find this book as an invaluable resource. its comprehensive and almost exhaustive.

Useful summary, poor exposition

The author's staccato writing style is reminiscent of Gilbert Strang's. Some may like it, but I find it jarring. The content is a concise summary of interesting topics at the confluence of mathematics, logic and computer science (see the table of contents), but it reads like a précis for those who already know the subject. This is no doubt fine if you fall into that category. If you're looking for an expository text, this, alas, isn't it.

A confusing hodgepodge of tangential ideas

I agree completely with J. Elliott. The author states so many propositions without proof, and even the proofs given are too sketchy, forcing the reader to fill in every detail, and in many instances, the author's proofs are simply wrong. Many of his definitions are vague and confusing, in many cases bewildering the reader's mind with all kinds of tangential questions unrelated to the main topic. Paul Taylor misleads the reader with chapter titles like "Posets and Lattices" and "Cartesian Closed Categories" in which he does not stick to the topics he promises to cover but jumps all over the place into unrelated fields. It's like he wants to "introduce" the reader to so much that he has no time to explain anything.

Besides, there are so many better books for any of the subjects the book brings up. For category theory, there is "Categories for the Working Mathematician" by MacLane; for lambda calculus, there is Barendregt's, for topos theory, there is "Topoi" by Goldblatt, who does not prove everything he states, including several fundamental theorems, but at least he stays on topic; or if one simply wishes to forget about new approaches to foundations and take up traditional set theory, there is Jech, whose book is very difficult, but at least it it challenging. But as for Taylor, his is neither interesting, nor enlightening, nor even challenging. As for those who already "know it all", what's the point?

In short, the author does not start with the basics and build up in any sort of cumulative fashion, but diverts the reader's interests into every specialization into which mathematics is expanding. "A practical foundation of mathematics" is anything but foundational. Tempus est legendi aliud.

An Enjoyable and Insightful Exposition

This is a rare kind of book found in current mathematical writing - a book that motivates, seeks connections across disciplines, and attempts to paint the broader picture of how the individual concepts and results are the pieces of a much larger puzzle. It is obvious that the author is on a mission, namely to convince the reader that contemporary mathematical foundations are important, applicable and useful to formulate, investigate and answer questions in mathematics and computer science. The book does so by drawing on many examples picked from widely across those disciplines, not only in the main text but even more so in the exercises.

Particularly in the light of more critical reviews of this text, though, I must admit that this is not the first book I have been reading on the material covered here. But it is surely one of the more enjoyable and insightful expositions in this field.

The book is arranged in two parts. Part one presents planetary data, such as atmospheric pressure, composition, and future conjunctions and transits. Part two contains a summary on each planet, including its moons. These summaries cover cloud and atmospheric conditions, surface features, historical early ideas about each planet, and recent discoveries from the Hubble Space Telescope and other data collected in the "late 1990s." The planetary information is supplemented by historical photographs, illustrations, and portraits. Appendixes provide very brief biographies of selected astronomers and a glossary.

The handbook is well suited for amateur astronomers and students of astronomy. Excellent Resource Guide

I found this book while researching in the library one day for astronimical events. I opened it and became intrigued immediately. The information contained within it kept me fascinated for hours and still does. I refer to it anytime I wish to know anything about the planets, eclipses, statistics concerning the planets etc. Each planet is addressed separately giving a history of the founder, how it was located. The beginning of each section pertaining to a planet includes items such as:

Physical Data: Size, Mass, Escape Velocity, Temperature Range, Oblateness, Surface Gravity, Volume, Magnetic Field Strength and orientation, Albedo, Density, Solar Irradiance, Atmosphere Pressure, Composition of Atmosphere, Maximum Wind Speeds, Cloud Features, Surface Features, Orbital Data, Observational Data, Early Ideas (a good history of how people interpreted information in earlier periods of time when technology was not as advanced as now), Important Concepts, Transits, Interesting Facts, Observing Data which includes Conjunction dates, elongation dates, Close conjunctions, Eclipses if applicable, Historical timelines.

The above information is provided for each planet, which makes this invaluable source book. This is a wonderful book, packed with information that will fascinate and amaze at the same time teaching you about the universe. Science was not one of my favorite subjects but now as an adult I truly have begun to love it thanks to this one book.

Specifically targets origin of Large Structures

This book provides an excellent treatment of the formation of large structures (galaxies and clusters of galaxies). It includes discussion of all of the various theories on the origin if these structures and good descriptions of all of the methodologies for collecting information about the early universe.
It does not, however, contains any information about the formation of structure within galaxies, star formation or planet formation.

Excellent Book, a must read.

When I began reading this book, I thought I made a mistake buying it. But as I read on, I began to realize this book was explaining things other books I have read take for granted. For example, I really appreciate the author explaining why the big bang predicts the primordial hydrogen and helium abundances. I have always known what they are, but until I read this book I not understand why. Thank you. Also, I loved the explanation of why the cold and hot dark matter models don't really fit the observed clumpiness of the present day universe. And there are more subjects treated in detail laymen can easily understand. I wish more authors would elaborate on these subjects with such detail and not just state them as fact. As an amatuer astronomer with an interest in cosmology, I thank the author for the detail in this book concerning particle physics and cosmology. I recommend this book for anyone looking for explanations of some aspects of the big bang theory. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is due to its few, seemingly unnecessary, elementary chapters. I wish the whole book was as good as it's strongest chapters.

Masterwork for simplifying a complex topic

This book is all strengths. No failures. Manages to describe most of the physics relevant to cosmology with no mathematics. Explains how science works -- excellent interplay of observations, the models they stimulate and the reverse process, as the theorists suggest observations that would distinguish between alternate models. Book focuses on science, not on scientists. The latter (preoccupation with whimsical stories about colleagues) is one of the most annoying features of similar books. Those authors speak down to readers -- this book never speaks down, and never introduces gossip. Really, you couldn't do better if you want to learn the current status of thoughts on cosmology

A master historian richly paints life in 18th-century France

By examining developments such as plumbing and lighting in various urban and rural sections of France, Roche provides the reader with a way to approach history in a more intimate and empathetic manner. This is not a book for someone seeking a general history of 18th-century France, but for the reader who wants to get a detailed picture of daily life during this period, it is indispensible.

One of the Great Works in Moral Philosophy

Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals is probably the single most influential work of philosophical ethics since Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics. While Kant himself considered this a sort of introduction to ethical thinking, it's come to be his most influential and widely read work on ethics. Despite its length--it's less than a hundred pages--this is a work of remarkable depth and intellectual insight.
This isn't an easy work, however. It needs to be read and re-read (and, I suppose, re-read) to be fully understood and appreciated. I've never found Kant as difficult and obscure as his reputation would suggest, but as a writer of philosophical prose he's certainly not the caliber of, say, Hume or Descartes. As many have noted, Kant is the first great philosopher of the modern era to have been an academic, and it shows. He writes long, meandering sentences, and the organization of his works leaves quite a bit to be desired. Furthermore, his penchant for arcane terminology and architechtonic can make his work seem more forbidding than it is. Still, Kant's ideas in the Groundwork, while subtle and sometimes elusive, are profound and original, and this book is a must-read for anyone interested in philosophical ethics. I should also note that the importance of this book isn't solely historical since there has been a recent resurgence of Kantian moral thinking in the English-speaking world.
Kant's aim in the Groundwork is to discover the fundamental principle of morality. In the first section he attempts to derive this fundamental principle from ordinary moral thought. In particular, he attempts to derive this principle from considerations concerning what is unconditionally good. Kant claims that the only thing that is unconditionally good is a good will. Moreover, its goodness is not a matter of the results of acting on a good will; it is good in itself. As a matter of fact, Kant claims that the results of an action done with a good will and the aims and inclinations of the agent with the good will are morally insignificant.
What, then, is it to act with a good will? It is, Kant argues, a matter of doing one's duty for duty's sake, regardless of one's feeling and the results of doing so. What is it to act from duty's sake? It is to act from principles that accord with the fundamental principle of morality. And here we get the first formulation of the fundamental principle of morality: act only on maxims that you can consistently will to be universal laws. In other words, if one is unable to will the principle of one's action to become a universal law, the action is morally impermissible.
In the second section of the Groundwork Kant attempts to draw the same conclusion from some philosophical points about the nature of duty. He begins by claiming that our knowledge of our duty is a priori and based on the exercise of reason. He then argues that facts about our duties are necessary facts, and that this shows that they must be based on a categorical imperative: that is, that our duties apply to us insofar as we are rational beings, irrespective of the contingent aspects of their nature. And, Kant argues, the one categorical imperative is the fundamental principle of morality mentioned above. He then applies this principle to some examples in order to display just how it grounds our duties in particular cases.
The rest of the second section is filled with lots of interesting, albeit abstruse, ideas. First, Kant attempts to ground the categorical imperative in something that is of unconditional worth. What is that something? The existence of rational beings, which, he says, is an end in itself. And this leads to a second formulation of the categorical imperative: (ii) act only in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in the person of yourself or someone else, as an end and never merely as a means.
This section also includes a third formulation of the categorical imperative: (iii) act only on maxims that you could will to become universal laws legislated by your own will. This formulation encapsulates Kant's claim that we can achieve autonomy only by acting in accordance with the moral law. Conformity with the moral law does not constrain our freedom since we legislate the moral law for ourselves. The moral law is not forced on us from without; its source is to be found in our own rational nature. Indeed, it is only by acting morally that we are able to achieve genuine freedom by transcending the contingent desires and inclinations that are beyond our control.
Of course, that doesn't come close to summing up the Groundwork. But it's a start.
Gregor's translation of Kant's text is fairly clear. She does her best to render Kant's work in readable English prose, and she usually succeeds in this endeavor. I also think Kant's main ideas come through pretty well in this translation. Moreover, this is likely to become something like the standard edition of Kant's Groundwork in the future, since this translation is the one that appears in the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant.

For the person interested in moral philosophy, this is a book to read many times over--not because of how good Kant's philosophy is but because of his aims and approach in motivating morality and the depth of his project. I won't comment more on Kant's writing or philosophy except to say that this Groundwork is much more accessible than most of Kant's other famous writings. So if you're new to Kant, this is a great place to begin--but it is still a challenge to read. Using an edition with a good introduction and notes such as the Cambridge texts edition with an introduction by Christine Korsgaard (a premier Kant scholar) will be immensely helpful to almost any reader.
